Hello to all members of PS,
My name is Paul , I'm 39 years old and live in Belgium.
I play poker since mid 2009. I started with freerolls and a little cashgame at lowest microlevels. I have always been a winning player and have not busted a BR yet to deposit again. I have already grinded my way up with cashgames from 50$ to 170$ on party and from 2$ to 220$ on pokerstars and have always played according to my bankroll.
I mainly have played Full Ring and took some sidesteps to 6max but never arrived to have the same winningrate there (more or less breakeven at 6max). I often get tired grinding and then played very small BI tournaments, SNGs, MTTSNGS, HUSNG,….
Since I am a husband and father I see it just as a hobby and can not spend the time I would like to spend on it.
Lesson 1
Question 1: What is your motivation for playing poker?
the game of poker contains so many elements which are very appealing to me. For one I have a math and statistical background (university degree). I am a very analytical and thinking person. I have a big interest in psychology and human behaviour (both live as online where you sometimes can “feel” what another player is thinking) and manipulation of human behaviour. I like playing cards and love the online part where you have HUDS and can analyse your own and other’s game
Question 2: What are your weaknesses when playing poker?
I am definitely a bankrollnit and will avoid higher levels if I am not confident that I would be beating them or at least break even.
I get bored soon which means that I hop between games (one week cash, then mtt, then sng, then HU,…..) and am not focussed enough to grasp one aspect as I want to grasp everything. Which is just too much.
Can not handle too much information in a proper way (have tons of books, vids,…) and can not find a decent structure to go through them: also here I hop which results in knowing a bit from a lot, but not knowing something thoroughly.
Question 3: What does it mean to play tight aggressive?
I am not convinced that tight aggressive is the most effective way to play poker. I certainly see that playing loose aggressive will have more benefit at very tight tables and you need to adjust your playing style between tight aggressive and loose aggressive constantly. The player that is adjusting constantly and at the right time is in my opinion the best player one can be. But definitely AGGRESSIVE is the way the game should be played.
TIGHT AGGRESSIVE means that you play a tight range of hands preflop (but based on position which means UTG tight, but on BTN you can not really talk about a tight range anymore) and when you play a hand you play aggressive where aggressive means that you are the person that decides how the hand is being played and you take the initiative and always try to give the villain a difficult decisions. You can not take the initiative by playing passively preflop and postflop.
