This time i got lucky because he hit top pair and i got paid, but what is the best strategy overall? Reraise on the flop for protection against draws or calling to get the most out of his stack? Do we draw away weaker hands that could call or bluff later on by reraising?

i would make ~750 on flop and shove turn. Otherwise i think well played.

I wouldn't be too worried about straight draws in this situation as people are unlikely to have joined a raised pot pre-flop with many hands that would give them this. I would be slightly concerned about flush draws however as there are two hearts which I think justifies raising for protection rather than simply calling.

On the turn the MP3 has already represented a good hand so is fairly likely to call a bet with a fair few weaker hands. There's also still the possibility that he's on a flush draw so you don't want to give him a cheap river so I think the push here is a good plan.

I would do the same with such shallow stacks.
