Ok mate. See this is the dilemma, what you're saying I've actually already been doing, trying to play hands as much as possible, basically putting aside the essentials of poker, I.e. position and just improvising throughout the hand and if I'm not lucky (which I very rarely am) I find myself on tilt.
So, adapting and playing ABC and lack of luck=tilt & playing the essentials to proper poker=useless play because others don't play like that. Therefore in conclusion it rests mostly on luck.
I think I see part of your problem.
I don't think you want to put aside position ever.
period.
and you should not need (or want!) to improvise while playing fish.
increasing your volume does not mean playing 7 out of 10 hands you are dealt.
increasing your volume may mean playing more good hands in position.
increasing your volume does mean playing more hours, days, weeks, months, years.
if the fish is making showdown often (against other players) you will see what kind of hands he is opening (or more likely calling) with.
once you have an idea of his range, you can play more hands that play well against this range.
(mostly in position).
as the hand progresses, think about they type of hands he reaches showdown with (final hand value).
You want to be ahead of these hands.
DON'T try to beat the fish in every hand you play against him.
good players don't win most of the pots.
good players win most of the BIG pots.
if the fish is a fish, and you are a good player, you should be able to be able to build big pots when you are a solid favorite.
and, as a solid favorite, you are likely to win many of these pots.
but don't forget: even fish get dealt good cards and even fish flop (turn & river) big hands.
so don't get your whole stack in w/ 2nd pair because you've seen him get to the river w/ A high.
be patient and the fish will give you the money (given enough time/volume).
be impatient or greedy and you become the fish.
