I assumed I should be betting for value and protection and thought that with his stack, if he called a 3/4 pot size bet we were both likely committed to call any bet on the river so I shipped it.

Is another bet size more appropriate?

I would still value bet him (I have no reason to believe he made a draw). And see what card comes in river.

Loose-passive players will usually bet or reraise you if they have big hand. They are all about getting to showdown and see "what happens".
