PS. rush is ok, didnt know that before all those rush spoilers :)

I'm inclined to think it's c/c against this chap. I can't seem to help myself in spots like this. I see value - I bet - they raise - pants are pooped. In this case I folded, but I felt bad about it.

ps oh sorry this is jb's blog. hi jb! still the same old fart, i see... and sporting a cool platinum. :f_cool:

She lives!!! Welcome back. Platinum won't last because I have had a combined NL50 and volume fail this month. And yes, still the same old fart, now and for the foreseeable future. :f_mad:

I have now moved to my beachside hotel and briefly had my feet in the Indian Ocean. I will try to write some more, maybe with pictures, when I get back. I've hired a car to drive around the island on Saturday before I fly back.

Rush spoiler no. 10

Spoiler

Power Windows (1985) For this one they finally found a producer that they liked. This is 80's style Rush at their best. I got this in my second year at University, and played it to death. It's a huge wall of sound - too much keyboard for me - but still brilliant. The video is pretty funny. Rush meets Miami Vice meets Tron, and Geddy Lee completely loses control of his legs - that or he really badly needed a wee when they shot it.

Play it loud (especially the last 30 seconds)!

Sightseeing by car, it beats missing it completely on your first visit to Africa!

My only visit ever to Africa was boring :( 8 days in a tourist resort in Agadir, Morocco.

Finally got off my lazy bum and listened to one of these tracks. I have so much respect for anyone who can play a bass line like this and sing over it. Bet he can pat his head and rub his tummy at the same time. :f_eek:

i'm too confused on the river, i don't think either calling or folding are bad. he just reps nothing after he checks back the turn!

Now one thing I would NOT do is bet/fold after betting half pot. I think this opponent can easily think "omg block bet, let's bluff our 98" or something thereabouts. If I'm betting half pot it would be for the clear reason that I am inducing a bluffraise, in which case I would obviously call the all-in.

What the middle aged man needs after a busy and stressful day at work is a little snooze. :f_zZz:

I am at that stage in life where I like to try to fit two days in one. If I am off with nothing to do (I am lucky enough to get one or two days a fortnight like this) I am up at 7am, busy, slow down and have a snozz at about 3pm; wake up an hour or two later and then am busy again until about 1 or 2 in the morning.

If I didn't have to work, I am convinced I would end up with two complete cycles in one 24 hour period.

Evolution!

siestas are supposed to be the most natural form of sleep.

i learnt this through researching sleep while doing the Uberman sleep schedule ( http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/4/15/103358/720 ). cliffs: Sleeping Hours
The Uberman's sleep schedule revolves around forcing yourself to rely on six twenty to thirty minute naps spread throughout the day for your daily dose of sleep. I stuck to thirty minute naps, currently having them starting roughly at 2 AM, 6 AM, 10 AM, 2 PM, 6 PM, and 10 PM every day.

what? is this actually working out for you chenben? you no longer sleep?

I expect he can pat his head, rub his tummy and clean his teeth with a a brush held between his toes, all at the same time. And if you liked that one......

Rush spoiler number 12 (pretty sure I lost count somewhere)

Spoiler

Hold Your Fire (1987). More of the same, only this time you could be forgiven for thinking that there wasn't a guitarist in the band any more, or at least that he'd been locked in a cupboard for most of the recording sessions. This is the point at which Rush and I parted company for about 10 years. I just wasn't that into them any more. I suspect this was partly because I was a big grown up 21 year old and was doing the 'casting away of childish things' thing that you do, only to rediscover them all again during your Midlife Crisis (What Midlife Crisis?).

Actually, it's a shame I stopped listening after this one, because they pretty much sorted themselves out by 1989.

I can't help thinking you might be right there my hairy-footed young friend.

Too young for me. The over 40s know what's what and what to do with it. You can keep those scrawny youngsters.

So here I sit in Starbucks near Kings Cross Station. All my travel from Mauritius has gone without a hitch, but now I find I have a 90 minute wait for an appropriate train. Third world countries! Bah!

I will write a trip report (should be pretty dull) later, but for now I have time to work out how to persuade mrsjb that the right way to spend a Sunday night after I've been away for eight days, including two weekends, is to watch Spain v Italy. It's a bit of a headscratcher. :f_confused:

Tell her she gets to see handsome young man taking their shirts off if they score and definitely at the end if they win the whole thing. Maybe that works...

The only way the over 40s know what's what is if their GPS tracking system is operational. Stuff shifts around...

So, picking up where I left off before, I moved to a hotel on the coast halfway through my week. This is the view from my breakfast table.

Quite an improvement on the view from my previous hotel's window (sorry about my finger in the way!).

I drove pretty much everywhere on the island yesterday, in this. :f_love: Very professorial I thought.

And just to prove that it does exist and I did go there....

Everybody there was very nice to me and I have no problem going back the same time next year.

Overall, I think it's a bit overrated as a holiday destination. Yes, the beaches are nice, but basically it's a third world African country run by Indians. Everything's very run down. People seem to live in concrete boxes, although they do seem happy there. I might take mrsjb back there once the kids leave home, if I can remember it through the fog of Alzheimer's.

I ought to do my monthly poker report thingie too.

NL25 - the lord giveth

NL50 - the lord taketh away

Same old same old, although I just didn't have time to play much. July is the month.......when we're not on holiday ofc.

Rush spoiler no. 13

Spoiler

Presto (1989). As I said earlier, I had given up on them by this point, so I didn't hear this until about ten years later. I think they realised that they were on the verge of death by synthesizer, so they hired a new producer, who immediately told them to use less keyboard, and to sing lower. And suddenly Rush are a rock band making good records again. There's lots of good stuff on this album. This is my favourite. No flashy playing, just a great song.

Was there much in the press over there about the Irish woman that got murdered on her honeymoon? The trial seems to dragging on and on? Their judiciary system seems very flawed and corrupt.....

I didn't see anything, but then I wasn't reading the papers. If their judicial system wasn't up to much, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

I love the fact the number plate on your car is 135.

I thought, oh how quaint, believing you, as such an important visitor, having been given one of only a select number of auto-mobiles.

Then I had a good look at the other pics and realised my impression of Mauritius was probably a tad colonial.

Looking at what else was on the road, if that was the 135th best car on the island, I wouldn't be at all surprised.
