Hand recorder used for this poker hand: PokerStrategy.com Elephant 0.102 by www.pokerstrategy.com.
Preflop: Hero is MP1 with J♥, J♠
UTG folds, UTG1 calls $0.02, UTG2 folds, Hero raises to $0.08, 6 folds, UTG1 calls $0.06.
I raise with a classic hand, UTG1 is a tight player.
Flop: ($0.19) 9♣, 8♣, 6♥ (2 players)
UTG1 bets $0.19, Hero raises to $0.57, UTG1 calls $0.38.
I re-raise him in order to see if my over-pair is good. His call alarmed me, he can have anything from flush draw to a flopped straight. I'm cautios.
Turn: ($1.33) 6♦ (2 players)
UTG1 checks, Hero checks.
He checks this turn! He could be with straight, but wouldn't it be kind of stuypid to let me see a free river if I'm with a flush draw? A full house or quads would be realistic here and he's slow-playing me... I'll check. But, I'm really PUTTING HIM ON QUADS!
River: ($1.33) J♣ (2 players)
UTG1 checks, Hero checks.
OMG, my nut full house!!! Why is he checking? We are both with deep stacks, if I raise I will probably get re-raised and maybe I'll fold because I REALLY think he has pocket 6's... I want to see his hand, so I'll check.
Final Pot: $1.33
Results follow (highlight to see):
UTG1 shows (6c 5c)
Hero shows a full-house, jacks full of sixes (Jh Js)
Hero wins with a full-house, jacks full of sixes (Jh Js)
Just to make a brief explainantion of my stupid play here... I was playing for five hours, it was a slow session. 4 tables and I didn't make or lose something. In last half an hour all started to happen, I started a heat-streak. Won about 200BB very briefly, but one of the previous hands I played I was with pocket rockets, after raises and re-raises I've got two callers on the flop all-in and lost to one of them against his QQQQ, and won the other guy, so I was 9BB good. A hand exactly before this one I went all-n AA vs AA...
If I wasn't distracted and stuff, I think that I would make those 130BB and finish my session twice as good, BUT, I was putting him on 6666... DO YOU EVER PUT SOMEONE ON QUADS???
Do I ever put someone on Quads? I almost always put people on ranges. Sometimes that can be narrowed down to a few possible starting hands and very rarely you might be able to guess the exact hole cards of villain....
Heres my run-down... Im just a learning player like you so take it with a grain of salt and feel free to disagree entirely with what I say... however..
Preflop: You are in middle position with one limper with a premium hand. Raise bigger! At least 10c (or 4x+1 for the limper), raise more if you can get away with it. What kind of hands do tight/weak players limp in with from EP? Not knowing much about this guy I am going to put him on 22-88, 54s-QJs and A2s-A9s so our equity is probably about 75% or thereabouts.
Flop: When he donks this board texture I put him on strong draws or a made hand. We can probably eliminate unimproved pocket pairs except 77 which has an OESD but almost anything else in his pf range is possible. We have 60% equity against this range. You are right to suspect you might be beat but that doesn't mean you should fear the worst. I think a raise for value here is OK but do consider that most of his draws here are reasonably robust against a pair of jacks and sometimes you will just be throwing money at a two pair, set or straight(though given he is "tight" T7 and 75 combos should really be eliminated). I dont think you have much fold equity either on the flop but you might have some on the turn... so calling with plan to re-evaluate on the turn is definately an option. If you had a small edge on the flop you will usually have a much larger one on the turn and you can get heaps of value from those times he donked into you with a draw that had coin flip equity on the flop but only 20-30% on the turn in most cases and sometimes much less. When he calls I assume he had a draw as a two pair+ would expect him to shove. If he shoved here would you just fold? I probably would considering how the hand played out. This is why in my opinion raising for information is not a good idea in general.. ♠_cool:
Turn: This is probably a good card for you. As I mentioned he probably is shoving the flop with monsters because his made hands are all vulnerable to flush draws but all the other hands in his range are some kind of flush draw or combo draw which is why when he B/C flop we can put him on some kind of draw. If we eliminate hands that we would expect villain to have shoved or folded with (66,88, A9s, A8s, 98s) we are in reasonable shape at 73% and when we include sets and two pairs about 70% so there isn't a huge difference. His check looks weak but he called a raise on the flop. Bet for value here and expect to get called by worse. If he was going for a x/r on the turn then that 6 almost certainly hit him (or he had you on the flop) and you should muck those Jacks fast. A6s, 56s, 76s made trips and sets filled up. Quads should really be out of your thinking at this stage.
As played your check back on the turn AFTER raising THAT flop looks like a free card play with a flush draw and overcards (or similiar) or some kind of wierd pot control line with a medium-marginal hand... Either way it doesn't look all that strong. My plan for the river is to check back if he checks as most of his hands are missed draws and if shoved on the river strongly lean towards folding. Obviously if the miracle Jack of clubs rolls off completing most of his draws and giving me the 2nd nuts with a strong possibility of him even having the 3rd, 4th or 5th nuts or a flush we just shove/call a shove and laugh gleefully.. But that never happens.
River: What the F*** were you thinking?
Seriously?
Kindest regards,
Drew
