To be honest I'm not much big of a help for OP because the series I like are most likely won't be appealing to him and vice-versa - not personal or anything, it's just seem to be the thing from experience. But people with similar taste to mine might find some more interesting series, so:

My all time favourites are:
Archer
Boardwalk Empire
Cowboy Bebop
Friends
Game of Thrones
Lost
Oz
Rescue Me
Sons of Anarchy
Spartacus (both)
Suits
The Shield
The Walking Dead
The Wire
True Blood
and last, but not least military/war related favourites:
Band of Brothers
Generation Kill
Over There
The Pacific

My "Ok" series:
Anger Management
Breaking Bad (not a big fan of last couple seasons)
Fringe
House
Human Target
Justified
Lie to Me
Louie
Luther
Misfits
Rules of Engagement
The Unit
Two and a Half Men

"Meh" series - which are generally not that good to begin with, or got significantly worse as it advanced:
Burn Notice
Californication
Community
Entourage
Episodes
Falling Skies
How I Met Your Mother (loved it first, but got really bored of it)
Joey
Prison Break
South Park (was funny once)
The Corner
White Collar
Weeds

Shows I dislike:
Dexter
Family Guy
The Big Bang Theory
The Simpsons
The Sopranos

Duuuuuude how can anyone dislike the simpsons? ok the new ones aren't nearly as good but come on..

Is hunted the new thing on BBC? with that Aussie bird in? Saw a clip of a fight seen last night and i just went

Saw some of 24 but never really watched it in any order

Liked the first 4 episodes of Homeland but fell asleep in the 5th one and could never be bothered to find it to watch again

The wife has got me into watching Hardcore Pawn and it's great, most of it is so ridiculously unreal but its a good way to pass half hour if nothing else is on

@Matt still can't drag myself away from House to try anything else yet. Season 3 down onto #4 tonight

Another I forgot to mention earlier and I don't think anyone else has mentioned it.

Pretty Little Liars it is really more for girls to watch, but I love it. It's not as good as Dexter or anything but it has a lot of good twists and drama.

I would reccomend The Walking Dead, Fringe, Two and a half men ( Surprised you haven't seen it AND its from the creators of the BBT i believe), Game of Thrones & Prison Break. Also I only hear positive feedback of Breaking Bad, ppl say it's awsome although 1st season starts slow

The new Sherlock Holmes show "Elementary" is very good - only 4 or 5 episodes aired so far, but worth a look.

I'd recommend Justified, Castle, Suits, White Collar, Person of Interest (not great really, but stangely addictive) and Californication (must watch!!!) True Blood, Firefly

oh and Battlestar Galactica - it's frackin awesome !

I have seen two and a half men but i just forgot to put it in my list. I have to be in the right mood to watch it though and it was 17472846x better with charlie sheen in it

+1 ... this show is a must watch imo for anyone who likes comedy not just stoners

another comedy worth watching is 'its always sunny in philadelphia'

ive also been watching a lot of pseudo-documentary style entertainment shows recently, storage wars and pawn stars are my favourites. also love a bit of ramsays kitchen nightmares and his new variant which is called hotel hell.
