That's a bit unfair to Up North - everyone knows the backpacker murders occurred in coastal New South Wales, down near Dannii Minogue...

Also, "convicts" and "deranged gunmen" should probably swap places, as should "babykiller dingoes" and "NOTHING". But "sharks with frickin' lasers", spot on.

Yeh that map is totally inaccurate. While all the information is true its all in the wrong spot

There should also be 'Arseholes' added for Canberra as well......although that's dangerously close to Danni and you'd not want to confuse the 2! As for Internet when I was in Melbourne it was with Optus cable around $80 a month but that included TV as well, but that was a few years ago now.

Hey, hey now... Canberra's not so bad. The cycling trails are excellent, it's peaceful but has some degree of culture (all right, not a lot, but it's the federal capital so you can't expect too much), you can murder a higher class of Australian if that's really your thing (politicians are a good beginning), and the birdlife is interesting (I was talking about the feathered kind, but the same goes for the other as well). Bill Bryson wasn't far from the truth when he said that Canberra is "an enormous park with a city lost in it." Also, when you get bored you can pop next door to ... Queanbeyan. Hooray.

And don't talk to me about Melbourne - was just about perfect circa 2000, now too expensive and crowded. Still interesting, but basically it's "been discovered" - bloody good poppy-seed cake, however, except now you probably pay tourist prices for it (along with everything else).

That sucks! I left Melbourne in 2001 so looks like I got the best of it. I was in Canberra briefly around 1997 and it was a bit bizarre finding the Captial in the middle of the bush as it were! As for being between Sydney and Melbourne, I think someone might have got that distance a bit out. If I recall there was a lot of mail order porn coming out of Canberra at one stage as well.........

In all seriousness, Australia's a wonderful place; full of resources-boom money and all that, but take my advice and go out on your own into the bush and see nature: you'll probably find a different species of bizarre insect under every rock, and will experience a landscape that's alien and far more ancient than in Europe, with animals and plants that have evolved differently as a result. The indigenous people have been there longer than any people have been in Europe, and they know the country and have a different point of view.

Australia has lots of different environments, being a continent, but if you have time also go to New Zealand which is utterly different again. The cultures are different too: Australians laugh at their politicians, and NZers resignedly accept theirs; a NZer will be embarrassed to tell you what he thinks of you, and an Australian won't be; an Australian in the pub will insult you cleverly, and a NZer will punch you through the wall. (Exaggeration included.)

Of course there are also the neighbours, New Caledonia and New Guinea, which I haven't been to but apparently are very interesting, and further afield the small and amazing Pacific-island nations.
