thnx gxtwo! ![]()
common problem I have lately: "Ah! Few hours before I have to go to school... lets be productive and play some poker!"
Playing some poker, enjoying myself and then its time to blind out and prepare for school... "Mehh... there's some huge fishes, i have perfect position and this is way more fun than going to lecture..."
How do I find the motivation to put school > poker?

I've been doing alot of thinking lately. About alot of things really.Although after todays class something in particular has been on my mind. A few weeks ago, I was steaming in a chatgroup on skype about a groupassignement and an argument I had with one of the girls in the group, when one of the guys in chat writes "vonki you are my dreamgirl! you dont take shit from anyone". I never thought of myself as someone who doesnt take shit from anyone, its certainly not something I do consiously. (or is it?
) Then today after class, my teacher in leadership says "I can tell you think alot about alot of things and have alot of potential. And you dont buy something (eg arguments) just because others want you to".
She was refering to a groupassignement we did a few weeks back (not the same as the one i steamed about) where she gave us a questionare with statements or questions where we had the answer YES or NO. She then told us that now as a group, you have to discuss these different questions or statements and you may not write down a YES or NO until you have all votes. Its not supposed to be a majority answer, you need all votes. She says she will not get involved at all or correct anything, she's just going to sit in a corner and let us run the show ourselfs (it is a leadership course after all). The first question was whether there is ALWAYS a leader in a group or not. I'd said no along with a few others, rest said yes. The others who'd said no one by one changed their opinion to a YES, but I wouldnt because I agreed there is MOSTLY a leader, but far from always.
Whether its right or wrong is not the point, but one girl in the group then probably gets tired of being stuck and says "Oh well, I'm going to write down a YES because everyone else said yes" and starts writing on her paper. Not intimidated by the grouppressure and everyone looking at me I just calmly say to her "No, you will not. You need all the votes and you do not have them. Move on to the next question and I'll give it some more thought".
Whats so interesting about it is that a few years ago (pre poker if you will) I never would have dared to stand up to the whole group like that. I think mostly because of being scared of conflict, and being judged or being in the centre of attention, along with other reasons. Insecurity may be another. I have changed alot over the past years, and probably even more so than Im aware of myself...
I dont know what I wanted to say with this all, just wanted to put my thoughts down in words and this was the best place I could find.
Some days it just becomes obvious to me how much I've "bloomed" or grown as a person as a whole by all the work I've done with myself over the past few years. Today's just one of those days when I aprechiate more than ever all the things poker has lead to.

How do I find the motivation to put school > poker?
"There's always two ways to do everything. The right way, and the easy way. "
And regarding the group assignment thing, just because we're alike in that regard and i'd have done the exact same, i feel it's necessary to point out that there's only a thin line between standing up for yourself in that spot and being an asshole holding the whole group back from progressing.
I think a common argument for all questions that are phrased "There is always something or someone etc" is that one can't ever prove something is always (unless it's mathematics). E.g. no one can prove that in every group there's a leader, because no one can ever go through every group. But it only takes one example to prove that something isn't always like that. E.g. one group where there's not a leader proves that there always isn't a leader. So if you ask all those ppl, "how do you know there's not a single group that has no leader?", "have you seen them all?" etc. Should prove your point to others.
All that said, let's try to catch up in skype during next week, ok?

Oh I do agree with you, but we did also "argue" or rather, discuss, and I was giving examples of when there is NOT a leader, but then they (or rather, that girl ^^) was more like "Yea but maybe the person doesnt need to lead all the time?" - she's now refering to anyone in the group making any kind of suggestion (i.e a friend in a group saying "maybe we should get chinese") is now also a leader. The whole assignement was MADE that way, for people to disagree and the whole purpose was for our teacher to look at who took the lead, who argued for their opinion, in what way etc etc. ^^
And fwiw, I tried to aviod being that "asshole keeping the group from progressing" by telling her to move on, so I could give it more thought (and come up with better arguments to turn around everyone elses opinion OBV!!

but yes, lets catch up on skype!!
