Dammnit. Knew I'd forgotten to do something.

Edit:

Fook that shiiiiit. Yesterday, I changed all the filters on my 3 platforms. Got rid of hypers on Stars. Got rid of 50fiftys. Got rid of 9mans. Added back in the $60s.

Fish provide the action for the games. If the fish aren't hanging out at the $100s in sufficient numbers, then I'll play the $60s. If they stop hanging out there, I'll play the $30s. And if they stop hanging out there, I'm fu*ked.

Right. Now I'm going to see if I can tank a few more BI at plo100 ;)

60 hypers are a good filler if you are struggling with volume on a day. way easier than 100 hypers.

Had an excellent study session with my new Plo/p buddies. They put me straight on all sorts of things I was doing wrong and hopefully everyone benfitted. Feeling inspired, I just played a short session which ended nicely:

Ugliest spot was this one:

Poker Stars, $0.25/$0.50 Pot Limit Omaha Cash, 6 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

Hero (BB): $50 (100 bb)
UTG: $30.66 (61.3 bb)
MP: $39 (78 bb)
CO: $22.02 (44 bb)
BTN: $22.93 (45.9 bb)
SB: $112.83 (225.7 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with K 4 3 Q
UTG posts BB OOP, UTG checks, 3 folds, SB completes, Hero checks

Flop: ($1.50) 5 6 K (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $1.01, UTG raises to $4.46, SB folds, Hero calls $3.45

Turn: ($10.42) K (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets $7.50, Hero calls $7.50

River: ($25.42) J (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets $18.20 and is all-in, Hero calls $18.20

Results:

Spoiler

$61.82 pot ($2.50 rake)
Final Board: 5 6 K K J
Hero showed K 4 3 Q and won $59.32 ($28.66 net)
UTG showed 5 8 3 6 and lost (-$30.66 net)

Honestly, I think I should just fold on the flop. And I think I should fold on the turn (but I haz trips ?( ). And he probably gives up his bluffs on the river so I should definitely fold there.

But I'm no good at folding.

Yep without some maniac read that should be fold in flop. Not that many turn cards you are happy to continue. Weak made hand and weak draw is still very weak hand. Too often villain will turn full house after that line. Not that I have much of PLO experience though :)

Going for these baby draws in these spots is just good way into problems imo.

This month SNGs went very well, though it has to be said I ran a long way above EV. One of the disadvantages of getting HEM2 is that it's only now becoming clear how well I have run because the Red Line functionality actually works. :)

The other big development was a serious foray into Pot Limit Omaha. SnGs have been my bread-and-butter for a couple of years now, and I don't see that changing in the immediate future. The games have got much tougher but they are still profitable, especially at limits below $100.

On the other hand, poker is about more than just making a living for me. At least it was... I think I got too caught up in the promise of large paydays and when they didn't materialise (or haven't, for some time) I felt disillusioned. But much earlier on when poker was exciting, a lot of it was the intellectual challenge. I think that's been missing for a while and that's probably part of the reason why my mindset has suffered.

I'm hoping that by learning a new game especially one as complex as PLO, I will reinvigorate my underused brain cells. Obviously in the medium term I'd like to be able to turn a profit at the game either as a sideline or running side-by-side the SnGs. To that end I've been reading up on strategy, taking a little bit of coaching and trying to concentrate hard while playing. It was very frustrating to run (and play) so badly during a small sample of plo100. Overall at plo50, I have done much better, with a comfortably positive win rate. On average I'm also tilting a lot less playing another form of cash game, which is a good sign.

By Stakes:

The Numbers:

STT Tournaments: 577
Average buyin: $87.60
ROI: 6.11%

PLO: -$1139.96
SNG profit: $3089.73
Estimated rakeback: $974.61 = [$648.40 (PS/PP/FTP points); $216.21 (FTP Edge weekly); $100 Stellar reward; PP March bonuses $10]
Other earnings: $435
Expenses $131.26
Total Profit: c$3228.12
Hours: = c90
$/hr: $38.8

[Note: HEM2 bugs and the fact I'm sometimes playing sngs at the same time as cash make it kind of hard to be very accurate about my hourly or indeed the total hours played. ]

In May, I need to work on finding a balance between the two games since it's clear that at the moment I'm going to need to play a decent number of sngs in order to pay the bills.

Given your liking for PLO, have you given Irish poker a go on Full Tilt? Where I'm from, a name like "Irish poker" would be a cue for unending hilarity and jokes about the winner being the one who gives away his money the fastest, but... it's quite similar to Omaha in that you're dealt four cards; however you discard two of these after seeing the flop. There's not much known about the game yet, so there could be all sorts of opportunities for calculating such things as the odds of a pair of a Jacks being the best hand pre-flop, or for seeing ways to read opponents' hands and take cunning advantage of little-known bluffing spots.

I got sick of STTs and had to give them up after everyone moved to turbos and hypers - hold'em is meant to be a four-street game and I need at least seventy big blinds if I'm going to put real pressure on the droolers (those who drool more copiously than I) - like a casino, I like to see the customer make many slightly negative-EV gambles before losing his mind and betting the farm.

On the other hand I've been drinking, so probably best to ignore everything in this post.

Edit: is Bruges as bad as all that? I've only seen Leuven and Brussels, but they seemed pleasant and Bruges is supposedly a big historical site. Maybe if you live in Europe it's natural to take its wonders for granted, but in my experience if it's shitholes you're after then try going to... anywhere outside Europe. East Asia, for example, could certainly be viewed as a species of toilet :)

Ah, sorry. Bruges is indeed delightful. The reference to "shithole" is from the film, In Bruges:

Thanks for the tip re Irish poker. Nice to know new variants of poker will continue to appear to keep the game fresh!

It's a shame about reg speed STTs, I agree. But I guess the formats with the most volume are those that the recreational players want to play, ultimately...

I'd normally fold pre but it's a minR and villain seems like a spewreg, playing 34/28 small sample. Severe ownage post but plop gods not obliging today

Thanks for drawing my attention to 'In Bruges' - one to add to the list; lately I've lacked the energy (or discipline?) to watch anything besides popcorn fare like 'Ted' and 'Prometheus' (and watching those should be all the encouragement one needs to switch back to the quality stuff).

Why don't you shove the flop in omaha hand? Why is calling his reraise better than shoving or foding?

Here is my reasoning:

Since I didn't 3b pre, I can't lay claim to AA**. Thus my flop raising range looks pretty bluffy on this dry flop.

So I expect his flop 3b range to be super polarised. Either AA** or air. Shoving flop folds out all his air and puts us all in vs AA only.

The only draw on the flop is 9T. So I don't expect many tough decisions on the turn. If turn goes check check, the river may be awkward, but I think it may be a risk worth taking to keep in more of his bluffs.

What do you think?

There is almost half a deck that you don't like on the turn. And he never raises with air there, it isn't a dry board imo.

It is true that against his made hands it doesn't matter what you do, the money goes in. But if he has a wrap, he might hero fold on turn if it pairs. Or he has 88xx and straight completes and he folds as he doesn't have the odds.

He doesn't have air, and against most of his range the money goes in with any line. But with call I think you will lose more than you might gain, as it's hard to see you folding any turn. Or put him on a hand that bet-reraises-folds on flop, that would shove the turn.

Sorry not been much in way of updates recently. Health has been horrible and mental game mediocre.

Have been playing a few sngs in the evening and mostly PLO during the day. I'm grinding my way towards 25k hands at Zoom plo50. The idea is to get to something close to 5bb/100 (EV) within that sample and then move up to plo100. There is a big relative rake decrease from 50 to 100 so it's an incentive to get there, even though my game is still full of holes, some more gaping than others. I'm hoping to get some runbad out the way on plo50, too, so I can run like god when I move up. :)

Currently about 6bb/100 EV and running a good 25BI under EV, (which I hear is not even vaguely unusual at PLO)

I am starting to play a bit better the last few days, I think. It's a good feeling, even if results are not in line with expectations.

In recognition, this is what I'm mostly listening to at the moment (late to the party, as usual, but what the hey):
