I get requests at work from people who have a problem with their computers.

They go like this:
"Can you please fix my printer?"

Then begins a long -- often slow -- question-response cycle where I try to determine the symptoms, analyse a cause, and effect a cure.

The problem in this case is that the user only sees an end result.
The process is a "black box".
To the user, they click a button on the toolbar, and paper comes out the machine in the corner.

They simply don't KNOW the questions to ask.

Books like "The Mental Game of Poker", and threads like your "Skyrocketing your Productivity" give members the knowledge to begin to start asking intelligent questions about their own mental processes.

Good job!

The most important points are all here:

You should also try to be as SPECIFIC and DETAILED as possible. I don’t mean random rambling of unrelated small-talk. Especially if you are sending an e-mail to an important person, be aware that he has very limited time and doesn’t want to discuss weather with you if he doesn’t even know you. You should GET TO THE POINT while giving as many details as possible RELATED to the issue you have. Usually it’s easier to give a good and valuable answer if you give us the background story.

  Specific
  Detailed
  Get to the point.
  Background

A great article.

Sooo, NYC was amazing.

The conference alone was outstanding, definitely worth every cent (and I still think it was too cheap considering the value within it).

There isn't much of a point in going into details about the business part of it since the majority of the stuff wouldn't be applicable for 99% of people who read this, so I will talk about the takeaway that actually applies to all of us.

The takeaway actually comes from the structure of the conference.

Day 1: Psychology
Day 2: Strategy and tactics
Day 3: Action plan

Psychology

It's simple and so incredibly effective. In order to change something, you need to first believe that you can change it and be fully dedicated to do it.

But how can you develop this?

The first step is just deciding that you actually really want something. This is not enough though. You'll still have doubts like "I'm not sure if this will work for me" and "I'm just not good enough...".

You can do a couple of things to overcome this. Being surrounded by the people who encourage you, believe in you and support you can be extremely valuable. If others believe in you, it's more likely that you'll believe in yourself as well.

Another thing that can help is seeing examples of other people who have already overcame similar issues in the past. Then, your mindset will slowly change to "If other people have done this before, I can do it too!".

Once you are at that stage, you could potentially move on to strategy and tactics, but I like to do one more thing:

Commit to being the best and don't accept mediocrity.

The people who really excel are the ones that aren't satisfied with average results, they strive for perfection. So when you look for strategies, look for the ones that are used by the top performers in the field.

This applies to hiring coaches as well. You can either hire a cheap coach that will get you mediocre results or you could hire a premium coach who will get you to the top.

**This isn't always true, but usually really good coaches have premium rates.

Strategy and Tactics

The next step is the strategy and tactics. What is the difference between those 2?

STRATEGY is the approach of doing something, for example clearing your head by writing things down. This is usually something that works for the majority of people and can be pretty generalized.

TACTICS on the other hand are the specific, actual techniques that you can use. For example, using different systems to store the information that you have written down. You can either use word documents, spreadsheets, a paper notepad... Different tactics will work for different people.

A common mistake that people make is that they don't think about the strategy at all and jump to tactics immediately. They try one, it doesn't work, so they presume that nothing similar will ever work. WRONG!

What I like to do is identify a strategy that successful people use, then test different tactics until I find one that works for me.

Of course you can sometimes use more than one tactic at a time or combine them/invent your own ones. Whatever works for you!

And you can do this too! Whenever you want to improve in an area of your life, you can go through these simple steps:

1) Find out what you want to improve
2) Research the successful people in the field and figure out what kind of a strategy they are using to be as good as they are.
3) Brainstorm/research a couple of tactics that you can use to apply the strategy
4) Test out the different tactics until you find one that works for you!

So it's pretty simple, but it's not easy. It does take a lot of hard work and effort, but that's what it takes if you want to become really good at something. I can show you the way but it's up to you to decide whether you want to stop being a pussy and actually change your life or just keep consuming the information without ever applying it.

I'll give you another example of myself that you can use right away.

Strategy:

Successful people work on improving themselves every single day

Tactics I use:

-Reading books, which give me insights into strategies and tactics that other people use
-Discussing concepts with my mentors/other successful entrepreneurs to get another point of view on my solutions
-Constant self-reflection, taking the time to think how I can actually do things differently/better on a daily basis

Taking Action

Once you have the strategy and tactics, it's all about taking action. I like to write down the things I'm focusing on in the near future as tasks and keep them in front of me at all times.

I suggest that you make a plan for how you're going to actually apply the tactics by breaking them down into small, achievable steps. Ask yourself, "What is the easiest thing I can do just to get this going?". Once you build momentum, move on to harder steps and get it done!

The first part, the psychology, is crucial here and if you aren't in the right mindset yet, don't bother with strategy and tactics. What will happen if you don't have a solid mindset is that you will most likely give up when you run into some problems and jump to another new, temporarily interesting thing (and never finish anything).

Once you're committed and believe in yourself, go move on to strategy and tactics. If you're playing NL100+ and are looking for a trusted advisor to guide you along the way to your goals, take a look at my "Aweseome Life" Mentoring programme. I can show you the strategies that successful people use and save you a lot of time that you would spend researching the information on your own. And you will also get access to a supportive group of my other mentees, which will help you move through the tough times.

If i remember correctly u wrote that u are using Evernote in the premium version - is there a big difference for a "recreational user" (mostly just taking notes mobile for remembering them at home on the computer) compared with the free version, apart from having more than 60MB/month data volume?

Hey!

I personally haven't seen any clear benefits from it apart from having more data (and I think you can also have more accounts or something like that). I actually cancelled the premium subscription since I only use it for notes, which isn't that much data anyway :). You probably don't need the premium.

Hi everyone,

It's awesome how many people have read this guide so far - almost 100k in the EN community, and more than 40k in other communities as well.

To be honest, when I started writing this guide, I had no idea that it would turn out to be this successful. I had no idea that anyone would even want to read eat! But I did end up writing that first post, and the feedback from you guys has motivated me to finish it.

I tried writing the SYP blog as a continuation of this guide which some of you might have read, which was an interesting experiment, but it didn't go so well, simply because it was targeted at non-poker players. Truth is, I want to help you guys. I know that a lot of you have taken action to change your lives and I want to help you get on that next level.

But I don't want to do this alone this time. Over the last couple of months, I have cooperated very closely with Erik Stenqvist. We did a lot of free webinars together for Pokerstrategy, we participated in the boot camps, we coached together and even developed a group coaching program. Now, we decided to also start a blog together.

Through this blog, you will get access to some of our best materials for free, as we do want to help you guys improve as much as possible.

What will make this blog different that the others are two things:

1) There will be only high quality content, and no BS.
2) We will write about both the structure and top performance in poker, as well as the mindset and emotional side of it.

We believe that there is nobody out there doing something similar yet, so we are thrilled to make this available to you.

So, how can you access the new blog? Well, you can simply click HERE to get access to the first blog post (on how you can finally waste less time on the internet).

We've also prepared a free 7-day procrastination boot camp for you guys that you can get access to by signing up on the site.

Now don't worry - we will still keep producing the videos and hosting webinars for Pokerstrategy - we love it here! This is just a side project that will allow us to share our knowledge and experiences with a larger audience.

See you there!

-Primoz
