Lol... someone's girlfriend baked brownies and we ate some. An hour or so later we were feeling fine so we ate some more. An hour or so later we were still feeling fine so thought it might be fun to play some online poker. 20 minutes later this hand occurred. The rest is online poker history...
Little known fact about this session is that while I won this hand, I ended up down $100k on the night. Moral of the story: don't eat brownies and buy-in. 
Hello, Jay. Just wanted to stop by and say that the movie was really good and was shown even here, in Latvia. Congrats on everything - you did one heck of a job!
What are your plans for future? Any plans to go full-on poker pro again? Is movie industry the thing for you now?

I'm basically retired from playing poker at the moment - I say basically because I'll still play tournaments from time to time and I'll still coach certain kinds of players, and make training videos (right now I'm learning applied game theory under the tutelage of sthief at DC). But I have no plans or interest in being a full time poker pro again, even if online poker was legalized in the US (though I would definitely start playing more often, I could see myself playing casual hours but competitively).
Where I go from here: I want to write and produce my own stories and entertainment that can reach and impact larger and larger audiences. Right now I'm writing a lot of fiction, I'd like to get better at completing and publishing stories and growing an audience, then adapt the most popular/interesting ones into different forms (movies, TV, web, games, comics, interactive books, etc). Right now I just find this kind of stuff more interesting and satisfying than playing poker. That could change in the future - I've never been one to close any doors completely - but for now, that's where my ambition's at.

Hi man. Super big fan of The Micros. I can testify that the RUNGOOD is real. Just a month after I watched the first episode, I won an MTT donkament with 1800 people for $6,000 - my bankroll was like $500 back then.

I think my biggest achievement in poker has been in founding DeucesCracked. I was one of the earliest online poker coaches and through personal and group coaching, and the training videos we all created... we have taught a lot of people how to play and understand the game better, and furthered its development as a whole. Some poker pros may see training sites as a bad thing but I find learning and teaching to be intellectually absorbing and satisfying, and I'm proud of this.
You probably mean achievement in terms of victory at the tables, though, in which case I think I have to look at my run in the shorthanded and heads up nosebleed games from 2007-2009, culminating in 2M2MM. When I started playing poker I never could have imagined I'd be competing at that high of a level against some of the best players on the planet. It's still pretty surreal to think back on.
I started playing poker way back when Rounders came out, when I was 12 used to play poker in the cafeteria with my friends at school lunch, and then we started having regular poker nights, and then I started playing in other friends' games, before long I was playing every single night of the week. But I didn't really start understanding the nuances of the game until or 13 years old. I was quickly obsessed with the idea of "rounding", felt like it was rebellious and heroic and so so cool to make a living playing poker. I college, when I found online poker and became an active strategy poster on 2p2. That opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibility, the world of the online poker professional. I went broke many times before I got the hang of it, but once I did I was all-in.

The RUNGOOD is real, I'm happy you got to get some of it...
1) I'm assuming you're already playing NL400-600. So, the question I would ask if I were in your shoes is "why am I not playing higher?" or "what is keeping me at these stakes?". I imagine you want to know something more along the lines of "what does it take to beat NL1k and higher?", but really all it takes is you moving up in stakes, playing constantly, analyzing your play, training, training, training, rinse repeat. There's no magic answer to this, it just takes more work on your game and a complete self awareness of your leaks (even if all you can come up with is "i'm afraid of the better players", you then have to go further and become aware of why you're afraid and how you can leave that fear behind). Sorry if this is a very general answer but once you start to see poker as a game in which your only opponent is yourself, you might start thinking about these questions a bit differently.

2) Math. Game theory, really. Poker in the past has been full of very vague and intuited answers but math (EV calcs really) and an understanding of how to build a strategy around game theory coupled with exploitative play will give you exact answers. The answer to "how should I have played XY in this situation" will cease to be "it depends" and start to point to "I should have played it like this because it was the highest EV way to play the hand, and part of the highest EV strategy I can play in this context". Math is the true language of poker and the best pros have only recently started to realize and accept this.
3) You tilt him hard and make him think you're a juicy fish. If he's steaming you can try to sit out and ask him to play higher then, usually your opponent is more likely to agree to move up if he thinks you're no good, going to leave, and wants to chase his loss. You can also table chat yo mama jokes
I can't really think of any creative lines for you, it's been quite awhile since I played any interesting hands, but if anything comes to me I will post!

As far as a few questions for you (in srs biz order):
1) What was the toughest part about putting Bet, Raise, Fold together?
2) How many times did you have to channel Luke Skywalker to get yourself through it?
3) Will the Pie Police or the Chilli be making any appearances in your further productions?

Haha, great point, you FL guys have always been ahead of the curve! I definitely speak more from the NLHE point of view (PLO is headed that way too, all roads lead through maths!)
1) Toughest part by far was dealing with Black Friday. We're making a movie about the evolution of poker, the history of poker, following these people's lives... then suddenly online poker is shut down in the US and we're in the middle of filming the biggest event in poker's history! Everything changed. It was extremely difficult to figure out how this would impact the story - not only was the story still unfolding while we were in the middle of it, the entire project up to that point had been focused on making a movie that did not account for Black Friday! As you may have seen in the final film, Black Friday is essentially the driver of all the conflict and drama, so getting there, coming to the realizations that we had to, throwing all the ideas we previously had out the window... very challenging time in the editing room and for the project in general.
2) Haha, not sure I was channeling Luke Skywalker, but I was channeling all the lessons that poker taught me, especially when mentally dealing with vicious, neverending downswings (just keep grinding, just keep grinding... )
3) Oh man, you really did grow up on DC! Haven't heard reference to the Pie Police in awhile. I don't know if those elements will surface in my work in the future but they say you draw on everything subconsciously, so I imagine I will never not be referencing these seminal moments from the past...
