How are you measuring your network usage?

Using the "Networking" tab of task manager (I'm on XP) I can see very little difference with the client running or not.

I see a blip when everything is loading, then it settles back to background level.

I'll try later to see if I notice anything while actually playing.

It is my understanding that those ads are cached locally when the app starts.

Any chance something else is using the bandwidth?

Hi again...

There was minimal network traffic while playing a single SnG.

There are tools that you can use to find exactly where all that traffic is going.

Do you run a good anti-malware package?

In the past I've found that excessive network traffic is often a bot.

Hi yet again...

I used performance monitor to record IO read/write from an iPoker client and PokerStars. In addition, I monitored total network traffic.

I played 1 table on each (freerolls) for a total of just over two hours.

Total network traffic dropped when I closed the iPoker client, but not by half.

The IO read/write monitor includes disk and device IO, so is not really conclusive.

Judging from what I saw, though iPoker and Pokerstars appear to consume similar bandwidth.

In researching this, I found a free 3rd-party tool that breaks down bandwidth consumption by process.

If I have time, I'll have a go at it later.

I suggest you download and install

This will show you how much bandwidth every process is using, and enable you to cap it at certain amounts for certain process.

I play on Winner (iPoker client) and after the first 30sec from opening, the lobby is using 0.20kb/s which really is nothing. With 6 tables running it went to arround 1.00kb/s which is still next to nothing.

Are you new to the client, if so i would guess it is using all the bandwith downloading the additional games that come with the client, ie the casino games. Once they are done it shouldnt have any issues. Though based on the ammount usesd, its still way to high for this

Based on the ammount of bandwith used, im confident it isnt the client using it all. What else is running when you connect to the net? Have you looked at things like Windows updates downloading in the background, or made sure you dont have any viruses, malware etc.

I was going to hold off suggesting installing either one, since -- as you point out -- it likely is NOT the poker client that is hogging the bandwidth.

Come to think of it, though a tool like this might tell him exactly which process actually is the culprit.

Yes, it will show anything and everything that's using internet, should give you an idea of whats stealing all your bandwidth.

I played a lot on 770 poker last month just to get gold here for some reason. Well in any event I can confirm that it did not take any more MB than most other sites. (eg. 888 poker that takes the most)

Appears to have stabilised
It would appear not to be the poker client.
I must have had a background download update etc.
Thought of bot is a bit alarming.

Just loaded 770 and initial 20mb to login then almost a dribble.
