There are people playing sponsored? :f_ugly:

I don't know what their future is.

It depends on how royally the player is treated. It must yet be fine to be a Pokerstars pro (ask GodlikeRoy; team members have no influence on the management, though :f_cry: ).

A forummate of mine was invited to the Poker770 pro team but had to turn it down because the rakeback offered was lower than the public offer of the room and required attending live donkaments :f_biggrin:

Day 15

Your friend from school wants to start playing poker and because youve won more than 100 pounds in your life you are obviously amazing and he wants you to be his mentor.

What do you do? What steps do you put in place and how do you take him from zero to hero?

I'll ask his facebook link and invite him to zynga poker because I know that nowadays it's impossible to take someone from zero to hero.

The party's over

I was in the same situation when I started :P My friend first explained me the rules, then gave me link to pokerstrategy.
Then advised me to open a TRACKED Stars account and to start playing with play money in the beginning.
Then I got my starting money from PS

So, I would do the same.

Enjoy the game!

Of course anyone is amazing when they win their first $100. But I would use my amazing poker talents to keep playing myself and win another sick $10 somewhere, and link the guy here instead :)

I wouldn't take him from 0-Hero. I would convince him playing poker for $$ is nonsense. You have to like the game to win $$. Otherwise it's too hard to be a winning player. What I mean is doing poker for $$ is wrong and hard.

Very deep! I like that.

I'm a teacher in RL so I do have that experience. Last year the GF asked if I could learn her how to play. I have up after 2 days. Explaining what the flop, turn and river are or what checking means and all the different hand strengths… It broke me. I don't mind discussing stuff with people, but I do expect some basic knowledge of the game. You know even fish know how the game works.

This.

Get him signed up on all rooms and let him learn here to start with. Teaching an absolute beginners is not fun, anyone that's tried to knows!

Once they've got a small grip of things I'd play some games with them at their house, watch them play etc.

If I can't do it for myself no way I'm doing it for someone else.

As said, I'd tell him about pokerstrategy and advice him to read those beginner articles. If he does read those articles then I would teach him more as I've made sure that he knows the very basics and wants to learn more.

anyway yeah, i'd say get here read articles do the quiz (doesn't matter if he gets the money, just to test his interest and make sure he learns something about the basics)
if he got that far, then i can probably watch him play sometimes and comment something :f_biggrin:

Interesting, a lot of responses seem to say that they'll just throw a link at him and be done with it (until he improves at least). Maybe we have different definitions of the word friend?

If this was a real friend of me, I'd take a beer with him and explain all the downs (and the ups, but emphasizing the downs) of poker. I'd have a relatively easy job cos "friend from school" means a fellow math student so I could throw around expressions like "sample size", "expected value" and such in an easy manner.
I'd tell him that it is a very hard thing to do and it will need his full dedication if he wants to improve fast. Like suggested before, I'll tell him that for $$ only, there is no point in it.

If he decides to do it anyway, I'll obviously point him here to learn stuff like opening ranges, but I'd take the teaching into my hands regarding a lot of stuff (like I'd explain him draws, fold equity and the whole why-do-we-bet thing myself, even though they ARE basic), especially ICM.

I'd stop if I feel that he isnt trying hard. I'd tell him that he can always come to me for advice - and no, bad beat stories are not advice - but I will not seek him myself (as in I will not bug him about having a session or whatever, he'll have to bug me).

Most importantly, I'd try to determine whether his downs are actually downs or just bad play, and whether his ups are actually good play or just heaters. The hardest thing for a hard-working beginner is that it's so hard to know whether you are playing right or not.

Actually, I'd be very interested to know how far can I take a friend from absolutely zero, and how fast! It'd be a nice challange!

If that's an offer of free coaching, I'll be your friend

I think I would direct them here and a few other places as there is so much information available online to help build foundations that could be cheaper and easier to access then books.

Then I would devote as much time as they wanted to actively teaching them, grinding with them, discussing concepts etc and as I stand to benefit a lot through doing so anyway, I don't think this would be a chore. Teaching others might serve to solidify theories in ones own mind.

I would certainly highlight the pros and cons before embarking on such a project, though I don't think you have to go from 'zero to hero' in this game to reap rewards beyond the financial.

As it happens, any friend that did want to learn poker wouldn't learn so much from me so very soon we would be learning from each other - probably the best way.

well, the thing with "throwing links" is that it's really not fun to teach someone from the absolute zero, and if someone's not willing to put in the effort to at least check out the basics here it's definitely not worth it.
i think that everyone appreciates mentoring a dedicated friend, but these are not easy to find you know :f_biggrin:

C'mon, I already have one

Seriously tho, there are a lot of things that you shouldn't teach him yourself (like starting ranges, boring shit), but there are a lot of things that are interesting to explain (like why do we have starting ranges and why do they differ by position and bb number - same basic topic but the issue is quite complex which makes it hard to truly understand AND THEREFORE fun to explain. IMO!)

Anyway, if you guys ever have a friend who asks something like that, meet him in person over a beer like I said, and tell him what he is facing. People at zero have no way of knowing what they are up against with poker, and they need that initial advice. That was the main point of my previous post.
Not giving them this initial talk before giving him a link is a huge dereliction of your duty as a friend imo!

edit: and I'm talking about both the pros and cons there ofc!
