Pre Flop: (pot: 2,000) Hero has 9♥ 9♦

UTG raises to 1,600, fold, Hero ???

i had him on on 23% EP open this MTT 3/6 EP open

my default line here is to just call pre and see flop, but imo he has a lot of Ax, facecard combos in his range that is kinda hard to play profitably post with those stack sizes without initiative

what do u think is best line in this spot? if 3bet what sizing and what is our plan if he shoves call or fold?

I think call is fine.

To mix it up a little I'd 3bet/call him to 3666-3999. He'll still see FE to 4bet shove lightly especially if he percieves you as agro opponents. To a cold 4bet I'm folding. If he just calls with overcard on the flop I'm usually cbetting small and then try to get to cheap SD.

This, though 3666 is the absolute max I make it. I like a 3bet pre.

3bet fold or 3bet call off?

Hi all,

Call off, I'm almost never 3bet/folding hands that don't have broadways in position (unless blind vs blind).

Hi,

I would usually make it 3200 and go from there.
If player is straight forward you likely can 3b/fold, since his shove or 4bet range crushes. If you expect player to 4-bet bluff then 3-bet/5-bet is more standard line

best regards,

I think with 3200 we'll get way too much calls and with 99 that's not really that much fun since it's pretty vulnerable postflop.

Ok I make it 3600 villain tanks even juse 10-15 sec time bank and then shoves?

Now call or fold?

Btw as far as I remember this was first time someone 3 bet his utg open

re-raise size usually doesn´t matter if you 3-bet UTG opener. Our range doing that is so strong, that he would not almost never going to call with JTs or AJ, since he is crushed. Or if he does, he would still miss half the times and we can take pot down more than 50% with 3300 c-bet (or if he calls, we still have always pair + 12% have set and likely 30% times have overpair.
Seems good enough reason to me, to 3-bet small.

Likely I would call UTG shove, since it seems that he has AQ/AK more often than TT-AA. But it usually also depends your image. if you´re playing 30/25 style then I would expect him to shove always AQ+, TT+ (88) + sometimes some Axs, KQs, small pp-s

best regards,

Hmm, i dont really agree that he us more likely to have AQ/AK if he shoves over our 3bet. We start the hand with only 21k so its a fairly standard 4bet shove for him with AA vs our 3bet. He kinda turns his hand face up with a 2x 4bet. So if i 3bet (wich i would not) i would snapfold 99 vs his shove range 99+, AK (AQ if we are lucky)

My standard is to just call here to keep his range wide and se a flop. Feels like he can play pretty optimally against us if we 3bet 99 here.

Hi all,

Flatting's OK but it disallows us to stack a lot of his pairs that open UTG that will almost definitely 4betshove on us. So basically my assumption is that his range is wide enough for us to get it in. If hsi range is 99+ AK, we should flat JJ+ against him and 3bet/fold every other hand including 72o.

Would you say that the same goes for the small stakes mtts that i play? Imo i want a strong read that villain 4bet shoves 22-88 in this spot in a ~5$ mtt for me to 3bet-call here..

In low stakes MTTs it's way less likely that someone will lightly 4bet shove on you when you 3 bet his UTG openraise. So on lower stakes I'd rather call than 3bet/fold. And 3bet/calling vs std 5$ player would be -EV I think, since 4bet shove ranges there are stronger.

3bet/calling cannot be -EV against an unknown opponent. Either the 3bet makes a lot of money, or the call of the all-in makes a lot of money. Either way, a lot of money is made.

Okay but if the calling part is -EV, since we go against a strong range then 3bet/calling is worse then 3bet/folding, since we till get the same FE, but don't have to get it in vs a stronger range. I mean that's why I meant, so 3bet/folding can be higher EV than 3bet/calling vs stronger ranges.

It can be, but it opens you up to make a large error (folding the best hand) against an unknown range, so I wouldn't be doing that.

I would agree with AceSteph for low and micro limit tournaments. A call would be the best choice for those. There is no need to 3bet a lot in those tournaments and UTG ranges tend to be quite tight.

Since we are talking about a 109$ turbo I agree, that 3bet/calling is the best play against most opponents. My sizing would be ~3500 chips.

Asaban
