No poker for several days now.
I finally managed to complete the backups of Mira, and I just need to finish my income tax before switching to Merope, the new computer.
Working night shift totally throws my daily schedule for a loop, though.

I used to work in a factory and nightshift was my favourite, partly because I was pretty much left to get on with it and partly because I just like the night time.
I expect switching from Mira to Merope was a bit like switching from a Fiat 500 to a Ferrari. 
Merope is alive and well.
First impressions: it is QUIET.
It is astonishingly fast, too, but I expected that.
Still no poker on it though.
I spent most of the last couple of hours installing software and getting used to the oddities of Windows 7.
I'm forced to once again change the way I use my computer.
I made heavy use of the "Quick Launch" toolbar in XP, but it doesn't seem to be around in Windows 7. Some icons stay on the task bar, but I have my taskbar on the right-hand side of the screen, not the bottom and I used to have it double wide w/ two columns of icons.
I have no icons on m y desktop at all in XP, but it looks like there will be a few in W7
Changing the way I use a computer is no big deal, since I've changed so many times before.
The first computer I ever used was a PDP8 and the only interface was a teletype.
If I think about it, I can actually hear the sound of the teletype.

One of the extreme disadvantages of having the same computer for 9 years (I thought it was 8, but I found out I built Mira in '05) is that you totally forget how you set it up.
I have an extensive library of Excel spreadsheets that query databases.
I can get NONE of them to work.
I am extremeously ffffrustrated, with the emphasis on the fff.
I think that it might be that Windows 7 Home premium is missing some connectivity features.
I might be that I need to find the right database access components.
I also could not simply re-install all of the old software I had. A lot of the old stuff won't work properly (if at all) in Windows 7, and some of my favourites don't have 64-bit versions.
On the plus side, on Merope my rather complex query for finding pat frequencies now takes < 7 seconds to run, whereas on Mira it took roughly 4 times as long.
I'll get it sorted eventually, but in the meantime I've acquired an extreme urge to consume alcohol in large quantities.
But I'll write off April -- the first month for a long, long time I haven't made at least chrome star on PokerStars, and it looks like I won't even get the first 5$ of my William Hill "we missed you terribly here's a bonus" bribe.
But onward and upward...

I am not nearly as proficient on the computer as you are but I do know you should be able to download an old operating system that is compatible with windows 7 so you can run your old programs that aren't compatible with your new operating system on your new machine. Man I'm not sure that makes sense to me and I just wrote it. You know what I mean.
The cost of these bridge programs run from free (internet download) to a small amount for a licenced product from Microsoft.
Glad your new system is as good as you had hoped. Now you can 16 table with ease.

I think the 2nd is just the Windows 8 version of the first, as I don't seem to have it on my Windows 7 machine.
In a few cases, that does make a difference, however the big problem I'm having is that all of my queries in Excel use a connection string of the form:
ODBC;Provider=MSDASQL;Driver=MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver;Server=127.0.0.1;Database=<dbname>;UID=<user>;Pwd=<password>
I have installed the driver for windows 7.
Any attempt to run a query results in a standard message box containing:
[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified
My current theory is that the 64-bit ODBC driver cannot talk to Excel 2003, so I will attempt to install the 32-bit ODBC driver and see what happens.
I may need to create DSNs for all the queries, though, since the MSDASQL provider does not seem to exist on Windows 7, not does it seem to exist on line.
The latest version of MDAC is 2.8, and that was only for Windows server 2003 -- in won't install on Windows 7.
The pertinent dll does exist on the machine, but it does not seem to ever get invoked.
I'll get to the bottom of it eventually.
I'd rather play poker though...

I also played a couple of $1.10 NL 5-Card Draw tournaments.
I could get nothing going in the first one, and I'm still in the second, but creeping along with a near-average stack. I'm making nothing with my good hands, and hanging in there by taking small pots with my small hands.
Maybe it would help my table image if I wore goalkeeper's gloves.
[Edit: Due to Murphy's law, I no sooner post that than I get dealt a pat flush, and get raised pre-draw. I will therefore pop back in and whine periodically to keep alive.]

I am SOFA KING pleased with myself.
As I suspected the complete failure of my excel database function was a solvable problem.
I installed every data access and debugging 'solution' I could find. And uninstalled them all.
One of them, though gave me the hint "architecture mismatch".
Even though I am running the 64-bit Windows 7, I needed the 32-bit ODBC driver.So I've run a few test queries, and they work, so I'm going to bed.
Also, the component "MSDASQL" that I appeared to be missing must be there, but it apparently does not need to be explicitly invoked -- at least all the queries I've tested so far got on fine without it.
I'm going to tackle SCOOP 07-L tomorrow just for the fun of it.
I practised last week, playing 4 $1.10 NL 5-Card Draw tournaments, and 2 freerolls.
I cashed in one of the $1.10 jobbies, but lasted fairly long in all of them.

I wasn't able to play anyway -- I think I mentioned that in my Skype.
I had to leave around 15:00 today, and I figured that the tournament would take much longer than that -- I was right. If I was ITM or nearing the bubble I would not have been able to walk away from it, and I could not reschedule.
I did watch until about 14:30 though.
It was quite an education.
Two players that I had marked as v bad playing FL were doing very well.
They were very, very active, raising pre and cbetting at least once an orbit.
At least twice I saw players bluff-raising a CBet.
Quite the education.
I'm going try to play at least 2 $1.10s a week, but they take minimum 6 hours, so the $/hr is way low.
