I think you should only consider a carreer, if playing poker round the clock is still fun for you and doesn´t just feel like hard work.
Yes it's been like a carrier for me cuz in bulgaria payments are low and I made more money playin poker instead of working.
I think it is harder today, but possible. If you take time to prepare your mind that you not playing, you can manage your career!
And you should set hours to play like 8 hours a day, don't end the day without playin 8 hours poker or u will end up in lazy habits of playin.
YOU WILL END BROKE WITH GAMBLING ADICTION. Sorry but thats true for. At best you will be average, but still will be on loosing side. So big dreams will crash but your addiction will keep you going. You will be half zombie grinding lot of hours without any other activities and this will crash your body, loosing streaks will suckout your brain. After 4 years of pointless mouse clicking you will woke up and realize that all those years gone and you became nothing more than fatter a bit smarter about poker but wihzero dollars dude.
Inspite this you will try to live from poker and will feel it on your own.
I back to belief that this is game for old ones who cares nothing just to have fun at the table. And in these days money is not the reason to start smth. So go and kill yourself with this goal to live from poker

What you describe is certainly a danger.
This is why at PokerStrategy.com we stress sound bankroll management.
If you look around the forums we also have long threads on how to maintain a good poker/life balance.What you describe is true of ANY job. I'm sure you know people who are so "into" their job that they have little time for anything else.
I'm one of the "old ones" who enjoys the game.
I enjoy the challenge, I enjoy the mental discipline required and I enjoy learning. So win, win, win for me. I would HATE to *need* to play poker as my only income, though I think.We may soon see, though, as my job is ending in 4 months (gulp), and I may have to retire. Will I be able to supplement my pension with poker? Hmmm....

But pppppp555555 is right. With a GAMBLING ADICTION Poker is as dangerous for you as any other gambling for it can (if you don´t do it right) deliver the same kicks.
I gave it a full year shot and reached nl50 from nl2 and Quit!
why? because I discovered what kind of hard work you have to put to make a good living, and what you are getting back after all that hard work!
1- mmm hard work! you need at least of 10 000 hours and with superior IQ to master the game ( at least beating nl500) and these hours are : only you and your screen and variance and trying to beat your self NOT OTHERS!
2- All that hard work to master the poker skill, and you are not sure where poker is going in the future..! dying maybe? so tough? more regs, less fish?
3- You are not giving anything back to humanity... so it is 100% not fulfilling (ALONE)!
all these hours to master a skill that will not fulfill your life!?
so it is up to you to say yay or nay.... BUT there is people that are making a living from pokering all day long! but do we know how they live their life or what they do!? or why they quit playing eventually!?

Wow is that real that we can make money from Poker! all these guys are printing money from poker and living the lasvegas life style!
I love Poker! ok I will be a hard worker and jump every month to a new limit! haha the worst thing that can happen is that I will only beat nl100 at the end of the year...BUT beating nl100 is great making easily around 10K $ from pressing some bottoms and taking these idiot fish money! Wohouuu Boobies in the Bahamas I am coming for you!

Really, it is part luck and part destiny if you want to really make it big. To determine whether or not you can play poker as a career will be determined by a number of factors. For example, your risk tolerance, you ability to calculate statistics, your ability to play the other players and the situations, etc.

My opinion: if you treat poker like a job, it will become just as stressful as another job. You will have to study hard just as any other profession, too. Also, unless you donate to charity, playing poker only increases ones wealth, and doesn't produce anything at all. So it's a job like any other but only generates wealth.
I do, however, play poker as a secondary income. This is because I enjoy learning and trying to improve at poker, so it's fun for me.
i would definitely only play poker as a bonus to my regular income. I wouldn't want the stress of "having" to play poker everyday.
It's nice to just play when I want and if I cash in a decent tourney I can withdraw some and buy myself a treat. I wouldn't like the thought of cashing out just to pay bills 
Upto you tho. It's definitely do-able but is it do-able for you?
