2014 Wrap!
WOW, what a year that turned out to be and it’s still not over!
Fatherhood and Work
On the 19th December 2013 we found out our latest IVF treatment had failed. On the 21st I got sacked from my job for arguing with my lazy supervisor and damaging a door when I kicked a metal tube out of frustration. Bastards.
At the end of January 2014 my wife interrupted a phone call I was having with my Dad to tell me she was pregnant. Whilst we were over the moon we were not overly confident. Nine months later we get Betsy the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen and a total game changer.
Workwise I was trying to get into youth work which Id been doing voluntarily for a few years. I vowed I’d never go back to being a truck mechanic but was beginning to panic after not getting a job in my chosen field. I was then handed a great opportunity to coordinate a service that visited young offenders for a children’s charity. I started with little knowledge of the service and felt pretty much out of my depth. I knuckled down and soon began to make the service my own. The contract was due to finish February 2015 with no chance of it being renewed!!!
BOOM, yours truly has managed to rescue the service and develop it further. We have just received confirmation it will be extended until December 2015 with a possible re-commissioning for 3 years thereafter. I have made great contacts all over Lancashire within youth justice and am making a name for myself (at least on my corridor). I have some great plans for next year for this service but have to make a decision whether or not I want full time or not. TBC………………………
Poker
I started off the year playing SNGs with some help from Tim64. I decided with a kid on the way that SNGs would not give me the flexibility I needed when looking after a little one so started to think about cash. I kind of took a break from online poker for a bit after playing some MTTs for a bit with little success. Although I did manage to win a few K live again this year which was nice but not sure where my live career will be going from here on in…………
So here I am now at the dizzy heights of NL5 and have just had my first coaching with w34z3l which was great, so I shall look forward to using his services for sure in the not too distant future. Things are going great and I’m enjoying it. I haven’t deposited in almost a year so that’s a plus at least.
Thoughts
I feel so lucky to have had a good 2014 and put it down to knowing what I wanted from it. We did all we could because we wanted a baby and unexpectedly got the result we wanted. I consider myself to be lucky to have the job I’ve longed for for so long but again I did all I could to get it and made my own luck I suppose.
I also managed to get my Dad to come and live over here as he was so far away and getting lonely after his retirement. He's really happy now and even just had a new hip. He'd have been screwed on the other side of the country.
To compare this to poker I’d say I’ve never really had that plan and not known where it’s going. Maybe I should make that plan and really go for it or maybe I should just keep enjoying it and use it as the one thing that’s takes me to that place all of my own!
