Thanks, I am not going to play online poker in next 2-3 weeks. Played close to 10k games in December and I have to admit it took its own toll. Just had first night I could get good sleep in a while. Well I did sleep close to 12 hours right away
massive Congratz! (I've been follow/lurking intermittently)
Enjoy your well-earned rest!!!
Congratulations on a crazy grind - enjoy the well-deserved poker vacation and I look forward to reading your report!
2014
So my target in 2014 was to achieve SNE. In 2013 I already made 100k VPP month test to try what it would feel like. Below is some statistic what SNE demanded:
Games: 53410
Avg. bin: 54.46$
Played: 1399h 31m 50s
Prerb EV: -40526.60$
Prerb result:-69442.61$
Postrb result: 34092.25$ + joitain k$ muista bonuksista.
Graph:

As visible above I did lost somewhat much in prerb or maybe hugely is better term. Obviously there is decent gap in EV and results so it could have gone in much better way as well. Especially end year results are most likely affected by huge volume demands and games that got tougher. I am not saying that it would be just bad run, but also about not such great playing.
But interesting side for me as well is to see how different formats and buyin levels has gone result wise. So lets begin from the one that caused my biggest prerb hole, Fifty50 games:
I didn't put more accurate info on these. Graphs will be accurate enough.
Fifty50

30$:

60$:

100$:

As visible from results I have managed to get decent results in 30$ limit. Beyond that it has been rough ride. Fifty50 is definitely weakest format for me. I started it end of 2003 and actual study of it has been way too low. Because of how reggy these games are I will likely drop them this year.
6man

30$:

60$:

100$:

200$:

6man is likely the second weakest format to me. Big part of better 6max regs do not play in 30$ which is likely visible in results. Big part of sample in bigger games came from last quarter of the year and results were not nice.
Then to those formats I have considered as my strength, 9man and 18man. I also placed HU in the end with small sample. I have played those randomly more as fun games.
9man

30$:

60$:

100$:

200$:

From EV side and results it has been quite breakeven run overall.
18man

30$:

60$:

100$:

I could give cEV information from these 18man games:
30$:
cEV: 1569620
cWon: 1139040
60$:
cEV: 832744
cWon: 1349880
100$:
cEV: 186001
cWon: 317175
So these has run pretty nicely overall from cEV view also. HM2 is not able to show $EV from final tables.
HU
So here are HU sng results. If I remember right these are mainly from 7$ and 15$ buyins.
So above is pretty accurate info how different games has went. It's not that nice view overall. But negative prerb results were expected anyway with playing 20-35 tables. Mainly it has probably been 24-30 tables.
Overall this year has been toughest one for me poker wise and life wise as well. I have took quite a big steps volume wise in recent years. In 2012 I did first time 100k, in 2013 it was time for 400k and in 2014 logical step was that 1M. Managed to do that even though I did have doubts on the way numerous times. End of the year volume was enormous as I just had to put volume in. For that year was quite a let down. I mean that my original plan was to have like 200k more VPP points at half point of year than what I actually had. Though am I surprised of these results? Not really. I have never been that good in staying in these sort of plans. Hopefully I have learned something from this as I definitely hope to not have to do same in last quarter of this year...
Out of curiosity checked December results. Played 9374 games and hourly wise it was 248. So as average 8 hours of playing everyday. Obviously some of days were over 10 hours.
2015?
One side that I had to leave to small focus at end of the year was studying of the game. Planning to focus on that much more from now on. Would not be bad idea to check through some of fellow regs game to get some new idea for my own game and to make some notes from them.
I will also drop some game formats. As I said earlier Fifty50 I will drop completely. Format would demand most studying and I am not sure how profitable it would be even then as games are absurdly reggy. Also I will decrease amount of 6max games and use lot more table selection than I did end of previous year. Going to focus more on 9max and 18man at first. One interesting question is what sort of hourly VPP could be achieved by focusing on these formats as to maintain SNE.
One big thing this year will also be to follow how games develop overall. How game profitability will look like? WOuld there be idea to add some MTT games? How about other formats (HU SNG, cash games)? Cash games obviously would demand most studying but it could also add some postflop development value for SNG games. But have to see how much time I can use for these if I want to maintain SNE. Though I do believe that making 100k months should be lot easier than it was earlier.
Mainly I will focus in my health side at first from start of January. More sport, better eating and so on. I won't try to make it huge improvement at first, but something anyway
Thanks, ghaleon, for putting so much info out there for your readers. Sounds like a super grueling ride, but at the end of the day you achieved SNE and made a profit. And it really is only a tiny handful of players who are capable of this.
I think your plans for 2015 seem solid. Are you already committed to SNE again or will it depend?
Will be following your progress and hoping you at least get back your $30k ev this year. ♠_thumbsup:
Great update - thanks!
I was glad to see you post about having to drop studying in order to accomplish volume goals. That is something that I often wonder about when it comes to high-volume players.
Like Tim64 - I am curious if SNE is the plan for 2015 as well - you hint that it may be with the 100k months should be a lot easier. How do you think reducing both your game and table-selection going forward will impact your ability to accomplish that kind of volume?
Tried to have coaching session in yesterday evening, but connection to pokerstars was absurdly bad. Update of player list in lobby could take like 5-20 seconds when I tried to register into some game. I have heard there has been lot of problems after latest update few days ago. How has it worked for you guys?
Planning to start normal sessions, but have never seen such big problems with stars...

Got some issues with connectivity too in the beginning of the year at the SNGs. When I've contacted support this is what they replied:
We experienced a temporary lag in our games. All games and tournaments are now back to normal.
This was last week. Not sure how things are now since I play micros and moved to cash games
Weird that everything has worked well for me lately on Stars but everybody else seems to have some issues. And it seems like other fifty50 regs might have some connection issues because they seem to be using much more time to do decisions.
Just pointing out that you're one of the very few SNEs from Winland. Not counting in plo grinders, there's only handful of them. Congrats!
Aaaw, that´s where your awesome advices come from, very cool. And there are not only technical problems with Stars, there are also tons of problems with iPoker and PartyPoker.

Yeah have commented randomly here. Have been more active in other forums.Anyway could give short report of things. Pretty much ended playing in stars in 2015 beside some mtt now and then. Got enough of their way of doing things and decided to vote with my legs (and moneys).
SNG is still my main game and have played those in quite a few sites. E.g. 888poker, partypoker and few different MPN sites. Lot smaller hours than 2014 was but making decent profit as hourly has been pretty good. Doing some private coaching as well.
Could post some hands and such now and then here.
One of interesting spot in recent games:
This was in shorthanded sng in early part. Pretty much unknown villain. Close to bottom of my opening range from HJ but still ok one. Flop is relatively dry so decided to go for cbet having bit of backdoor equity and good amount of fold equity. Villain calls and at this point his range can be really wide. Like some Ax, Qx, 7x, 5x, some pocket pairs like 88-TT, 66 and some straight draws and flush draws. Some of draws might raise as well as some stronger made hands.
Turn is ok as it gives me gutshot so decided to go for pretty sizable bet. Villain likely wont fold most Qx but I can put lot of pressure on weaker hands like some A high and weaker than Qx pairs. Weaker draws should also fold. Villain calls.
In river villain suddenly donk bets. Only good draw completing is 89 mainly. Sometimes plain 89 could also fold turn though people tend to be call happy. Now this river bet is actually pretty polarizing as villain should not be making value bet here without really solid hand like two pair, sets, straight mainly. Flush draws has missed which he might bluff as well.
So I cant call with K high obviously but I decided to shove as bluff with this one. Good side is I dont have hearts and I also block that 89 nuts. For value I would shove versus unknown QQ, 55, 77, TT, QT, 89. Villain gets great price to call. Around 1k for over 4k pot so I shouldnt really bluff that much here. Also no need to be balanced but I still want to have some bluffs as his line is bit funky. Its pretty drawy table so how often villain is just flatting flop and turn and then donk bet river with e,g, flopped strong hand or QT. Danger here is that unknown might just bet-call river sometimes with weird stuff like KQ or JT of hearts. But it doesnt need to work that often as I risk 1.5k to win 1.5k. Only tiny bit of ICM in here.
