Hi,

A short introduction:
I'm a 25yo male that works fulltime and goes to the gym 6days/week. In my (almost no) spare time I'm playing poker.

I used to play SNG's (up to $15 180s) & MTT's (up to $33) and I did make some decent profit last year even though I only played for about 1/2 year and had a 5k downswing (from wich I recovered).

Since august I started playing zoom because I love/need the freedom. I started @ NL10, had some struggles, worked my way up to NL25 and seemed to beat it. But in October I made a promotion at my job and I didn't have any motivation left to play poker. I started playing again since February

The goal:
Having fun and making profit. I really love the pokertheory and the psychology/mental aspect. I would like to climb up in stakes and see where I can get with my limited amount of time. The current goal is to get fast at NL25 and then take it slow and have patience.

The starting point:
Started at 10NL again. It went bad for the first couple K's of hands. Then it went extremely well. I had a shot @ NL25 today but failed miserably so tomorrow I'm back at 10NL. I still have a roll of $600 so it's all good

The study plan:

Books (+- 20min/day)
- Applications of NLHE
- Will Tipton books about HU
- Jared Tendler books
- The Mathematics of Poker (delayed)

Videos:
- Live session video (2/week)
- Concept video (1/week)
- Yale and Standford free courses of GTO (delayed untill at NL25)

Pokertracker:
- Study frequent spots: BTN & BB spots (highest VPIP + different concepts: OOP vs IP) = warming up before every session 5-10 marked hands deep analysis
- Review biggest spots 3 spots wednesday + 3 spots thursday
- Review marked hands 5 marked hands monday + 5 marked hands tuesday

Pokerstars:
- Max 2 zoom tables 1 hour a day
-> Focus on thought process and handreading (+interesting lines)
-> Focus on note taking + marking + tagging important/clueless hands

- rest of grind up to 4 zoom tables (around 8-12h a week pbb in total)

Blog 'rules'

- It's a poker blog. Please don't ask me about my personal life. If you have questions about how I train at the gym you may add me as a friend.
- I decide wheter I update or not. In my previous blogs I sometimes felt pressured to update if I didn't post for a couple of days .. that's no fun
- You can ask anything you want about poker (inc. graphs / results / ...) as long as you respect the rule above
- Discussing hands is very much approved ! Let's learn from eachother
- People who want to discuss poker on skype, just message me. Be aware, I only want people that are serious and are at least on the same level as me so we can learn from eachother. I speak english and dutch. For players on a lower level: Don't take this the wrong way I just don't have time to 'teach', I did this a lot in the past when I had more time ... so sorry. But there are a lot of good videos on pokerstrategy so don't be sad

Sets everywhere

So far so good. Pbb will do another session later

Noticeable decrease in concentration after a while .. at least so it seems (it also feels this way so ...) . Some setups too (Eg. a fish that jams on a dry flop with AA overpair while I have QQ overpair).

I kept hitting full houses and sets today though .. and got paid pretty frequently .. that upswing :f_love:. Pretty sure I should have won way more with this kind of upswing though.

I will analyse some hands later today or tomorrow in this blog.

edit:
Ended the day on only $6.22 profit

Hand analysis:

Hand 1:

Spoiler

PokerStars - $0.10 NL FAST (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: 119.3 BB
SB: 240.1 BB
Hero (BB): 108.3 BB
UTG: 159.8 BB
MP: 130.4 BB
CO: 130.4 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has K♦ Q♣

Note: BTN is pbb a fish, SB is an aggro fish who plays toppair really aggro.
I think a flat may have been better. In game I wasn't sure about the flat, but since I had great blockers I was pretty sure the 4bet would be profitable / easier to play so I don't really blame myself for 4betting here.

fold, fold, fold, BTN raises to 2.5 BB, SB raises to 8.5 BB, Hero raises to 18 BB, fold, SB calls 9.5 BB

Flop: (38.5 BB, 2 players) A♣ 3♥ 4♠

Note: Well .. he never has AA , KK wich I do .. he pbb doesn't have AK wich I do. Small chance he has 33 or 44 ... so I think he has a lot of missed broadways in his range, AQ and TT-QQ (maybe QQ pbb will stack that off as well). In that case I think I will autoprofit from cbetting 100% on this board. KQo is definetly in my bluff range here as it's the only way to pbb win this pot against an aggro fish + I think it's profitable.

SB checks, Hero bets 16 BB, fold,

Hand 2:

Spoiler

PokerStars - $0.10 NL FAST (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: 100.5 BB
SB: 87 BB
Hero (BB): 342.1 BB
UTG: 131 BB
MP: 274.6 BB
CO: 119 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has Q♠ T♠

Note: std call,

fold, fold, fold, fold, SB raises to 3 BB, Hero calls 2 BB

Flop: (6 BB, 2 players) 9♦ J♣ 4♣

Note: his sizing is really weak.. I think I can R here with J9, 99, 44, QTs for value .. Will pbb call AXs FDs and raise OESDs (QTo/QTs/T8o/T8s) and weaker FD's (many of my FD's are combo draws so there aren't that many) . But also strong FD's with overs and a Gutshot like KQs .. so even my bluffing range has tons of equity. That's why I think I shouldn't be affraid to put in some lighter combo's like QT OESD

SB bets 2.8 BB, Hero raises to 10.2 BB, SB calls 7.4 BB

Turn: (26.4 BB, 2 players) A♥

Note: A: Well .. it sucks if he has AJ .. but still the A isn't that bad of a card for my perceived range as he may think I can X/R my AXs here.. the Ac would make the hand totally different though + he may also have called my raise with a draw so his range is not really that strong + I have a gutshot + there are many ugly cards to come for his Jx and even 2pair and sets. In a game theory stance I probably need to give up this hand though as it is the bottom off my flop raising range .. but GT-NO in this spot imo.

SB checks, Hero bets 16.6 BB, SB calls 16.6 BB

River: (59.6 BB, 2 players) 5♠

Note: a blank on the river .. not really thrilled about this. He has a potsize stack behind + he has pretty wide stats .. he may still have a missed draw, he may still have a J that can fold so I decide to jam .. I think wider players like him still fold enough. He only has to call 1/3 times to win and BE though .. so from a GTO stance I should have 2/3 value and 1/3 bluff .. I'm really unbalanced with my shove here ..

SB checks, Hero bets 312.3 BB and is all-in, fold,

Hand 3:

SB: 112 BB
BB: 50 BB
Hero (UTG): 180.1 BB
MP: 100 BB
CO: 102.6 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has T♠ T♥

Note: std

Hero raises to 2.7 BB, fold, fold, BTN calls 2.7 BB, fold, fold

Flop: (6.9 BB, 2 players) J♥ 9♣ 6♥

Note: Well I'm not sure if I should cbet or not .. I can make him fold some overcard equity .. on the other hand there aren't that many really ugly overcards .. Q gives me and OESD, K a gutshot and A will hit my range so hard that I can bluff.

Hero checks, BTN bets 4.3 BB, Hero calls 4.3 BB

Turn: (15.5 BB, 2 players) T♣

Note: Well .. I wasn't sure here either .. I can pbb get value from AJ, 99 if I reraise .. I'll value town myself against KQ tho .. on the other hand I can really make him pay to see an additional card as he should have some FD bluffs here .. so I only need to be affraid of KQ and JJ so I think a raise would have been better.

Hero checks, BTN bets 9.6 BB, Hero calls 9.6 BB

River: (34.7 BB, 2 players) K♥

Note: That's what you get ... worst card in the deck along with Qh .. so easy X/F

Hero checks, BTN bets 21.5 BB, fold,

How do you mean ? I had some old blogs but they are dead.

Yesterday I tilted a little. Didn't really catch on to it .. well actually I thought I was just a little annoyed and not tilt .. so that had to be a really clear sign

Wel nuttig om een paar van die handen te bekijken en te analyseren. Kom vaak in problemen in 3bet spots OOP

let's say this is his def range JJ-77, QdQs, QhQs, AQs-ATs, KTs+, QTs+, J9s+, T9s, 98s, AhKh, AsKs, AQo-AJo, KQo, AsKd, AsKh, AsKc
if he calls 1 pair toppair or 2nd pair and three of a kind and FD he will call 70 combo's of 111 combo's. That range has 74% equity against me and I can never autoprofit + I dont have a strong draw
If I check I have 45,5% against his first range .. wich is still behind but it's fine to give up I guess. My bluffs here should be suited cards w/ FD's --> AcXc there shouldn't be too many considering his range and my small FE.

Updated study plan

I will keep strictly to this planning/volume. I will use smartphone apps to remind me to do it. I will use the blog as a log.

1. HH reviews (at least 5 hands per day in a week and 15 in weekends) in pokertracker
--> Handread (marked, BTN and BB spots)
--> equity estimations
--> fold equity estimations (use equilab to see how hard something hit his range)

2. Play play play
--> 2x week on non-training days. Only 2 tables allowed. Play at least 500hands/day. Extreme focus on deep thoughts and notes
--> 2x weekend. 2 tables warmup for 15 minutes, 3 tables grinding --> Play at least 2000 hand/day (around +3hours)
--> mark hands
--> be aware of mental state. Take a break when you have the least supcision you may tilt and analyze it
--> Do some volume/time challenges

3. Equity quiz on equilab.
--> 20 hand per day

4. Actively watch videos (3-7/week)
- 3-4 live session
- 1-2 concepts

5. reads books (weekends 30 minutes/day + train trips or other occasion around twice a week)
- applications of NLHE
- Will Tipton books
- Jared Tendler books

6. Play with ranges in CREV (weekend 20 minutes/day)
--> try to apply the studied stuff from books and concept videos
--> play with ranges and build a custom strategy

7. Analyse stats (every last sunday of the month)

8. Study GTO --> delayed
--> follow free online yale courses

Should look something like this. I can always reschedule poker to get freetime to do something fun/social

I can pbb add bluffs here ... maybe AcKx it doesn't solve that much though it gives me 20 raising combo's and 11 bluff combo's so since it doesn't solve a lot

I think his range is around KK+, QdQh, QdQc, QhQc, 9d9s, 9d9c, 9s9c, 6d6s, 6d6c, 6s6c, KJs-KTs, JTs, J8s, T8s-T7s, 87s, AhKh, AdQd, AhQh, AcQc, KdQd, KhQh, KcQc, AhJh, QdJd, QhJh, QcJc, AhTh, QdTd, QhTh, QcTc, Qd9d, Qc9c, Ah8h, Kh8h, Qd8d, Qh8h, Qc8c, Ah7h, Kh7h, Qd7d, Qh7h, Qc7c, Jh7h, Ad6d, As6s, Ac6c, Kd6d, Ks6s, Kc6c, 8d6d, 8s6s, 8c6c, 7d6d, 7s6s, 7c6c, Ah5h, Kh5h, 6d5d, 6s5s, 6c5c, Ah4h, Ah3h, Ah2h, KJo-KTo, JTo, AdQh, AdQc, AhQd, AhQc, AsQd, AsQh, AsQc, AcQd, AcQh, KdQh, KdQc, KhQd, KhQc, KsQd, KsQh, KsQc, KcQd, KcQh, QdJh, QdJs, QdJc, QhJd, QhJs, QhJc, QcJd, QcJh, QcJs, QdTh, QdTs, QdTc, QhTd, QhTs, QhTc, QcTd, QcTh, QcTs
He can cbet around 65-70% using only his FD's, GSSD, OESD's and toppair+ hands
W/ my current calling range I have big troubles w/ defending on these kinds of boards. If I would call 2nd pair+ FD's, OESDs, Backdoor FD's w/ backdoor SD's and GSSD I can barely defend 60% on this flop. Theoretically I should defend with some ATo on this flop (0-gap BDSD's). They still have around 35% equity wich is not bad. I'm not really liking the playabillity though. If I hit I have a OESD sometimes or a GSSD, if he barrels my folding range on the turn would be huge. So I'm not really liking mt preflop range I guess
On NL10 considering the really high rake I guess I should defend tighter. If I drop the ATo and KJo combo's and the lower pockets w/ a range around TT-44, AJs-A9s, KTs+, QTs+, JTs, T9s, 98s, AQo-AJo, KQo (not considering the 3bets obv) I can call my 2nd pair+ hands, FD's, OESDs, GSSD w/ backdoors, BDSD w/ BDFD. This will already give me close to 60% defending on this flop without having to add draws w/ poor playability. OTT I also have to fold way less as I can pickup some As FD's and have more made hands
This strategy is not perfect but on the other hand is pretty decent I guess, it's a pretty disgusting board OOP and on micro stakes I don't think there are a lot of options to defend here because of the rake.

Hero checks, CO bets 4.3 BB, fold,

Yesterday
Pretty frustrating day. Was down in my first session 1,7k hands. Didn't run great, also didn't play my best game (even though I thought I did ingame).

Then I decided to do a quick 2nd session to complete my challenge for the 'flippament ticket'. Suddenly I had a hotrun, got several monsters and could stackoff against hands like 44 (lol UTG fish). I also won a big flip w/ AKs vs QQ.

Hands played: 2130
Profit: $14.36 (6.7 bb/100)
AIEV: $6.81 (3.2 bb/100)
Rake: $14.8 (wich is just so absurd .. stars really should fix this)

All hands up till now:
Pretty swingy
15k hands
profit: $24.22 (1,6 BB/100)
AIEV: $29.78 (1,96 BB/100)
Rake: $101.04 (6,6 BB/100 wich is a lot)
I hope I can move up quick to NL25 where rake should be considerably lower .. tougher opponents but I don't think it will affect me that much

how high is your fold to cbet? a bit over 50% i guess?

i think the relevance of rake is overrated, the difference in skill from nl10 players to nl25 players is much higher than the lower rake% you will be paying there. i am pretty sure that the optimal approach to beating nl10- is playing super loose-aggressively (>30 vpip), even though you will pay considerably higher rake

[edit: calculated some numbers for you from my old databases]
nl25 ~32vpip: 8.6 BB/100 rake
nl10 ~30vpip: 9.6 BB/100 rake (thought this was higher myself)
nl5 ~40vpip: 12.6 BB/100 rake

so the rake doesnt get that much lower as you move up, and certainly not anywhere nearly enough to compensate the decrease in edge

Interresting post. I'm a bit surprised that the differences aren't higher.

I think you're right. There are a lot of others things to focus on then rake atm ! I used to play (and pbb beat NL25 though) atm my BR doesn't let me. But no problem I can still learn on NL10.

My stats over 15k hands
VPIP: 23.66
PFR: 19.23
3b: 7.3 (this should be higher I guess)

Fold to cbet Flop: 51%
Cbet Flop: 54% (too low ?)
Cbet turn: 40%
Fold to turn bet : 54%
Fold to R bet: 59%

Lol that session !

First won around 5,5 BI, . Then I spewed some away because I wasn't playing my a-game anymore and because of an SNG 180 on the side I continued. I made some mistakes and lost 3,5 bi :( pretty stupid .. EV wide I only lost one so they weren't like huge mistakes or something ..

Oh yeah about that $4,5 180. I kinda binked it .. hotrun + played well +$221 profittzzz (and $19 from playing 6max)

So I think I may take a shot at NL25 now :) wel not now but next week or weekend when I feel ready !
