Cross posted from another blog...

Hey EYP just out of interest how many hands have you actually played throughout this total? I know your results aren't what you want atm but I feel like you haven't played THAT many hands really (I could be wrong though).

Hi mate, hope you are well.

My volume is lower than of course I would like...

I am guessing 200k hands (some not tracked like Skypoker for example).

While we are at it I was looking through my accounts and got some other figures...

-$1355 = Losses at tables.

-$400 = Guess at expenses from bankroll (HM2, HH convertor, new mouse ;) )

+$2800 = Must be how much I got in RB and FDB's

Overall around + $1050.

This is PT4 graph I have....

(Doodie asked about EV - FWIW I am 700bb under EV ($320))

That graph tells it fairly well, I felt we really got hold of things at the 20k hand mark (even though all-in was killing me a bit) and since the 75k hand mark I think I have run really badly and that is recent and coaches/better players are agreeing with me a lot.

Talking about variance and heads-up etc...

It is kinda interesting this to me because I have got 3 blogs going and I get quite a few comments saying I should change formats.

I don't really get that (the more I think about it). I mean people tell me HU is or feels more swingy but I don't think I am complaining about it (or am I?). Yes I sometimes post some bad beats or whatever but usually it is to blow off steam/get sympathy/have fun. I mean I see a lot of other guys going bananas, threatening to quit, breaking things you name it but it generally is blowing over my head.

Please tell me if I am whining too much in here as I certainly don't mean to be like that and I would hate to give the impression that I am complaining.

I really like heads-up, it is actually much better for me in many ways so I actually cannot see me changing format at all.

Anyway I ramble...

I love variance. The person who understands it has a massive advantage over the one that doesn't (long term). Mainly people who don't get it make desperate changes to their game when they are losing unnecessarily (rather than get experts' opinions) and people who run well think they are the mutts nuts and so don't work on their game.

It's just that... well... variance doesn't love me!!!!

Btw... Last session came back and played few hours later and hit stop loss LDO.

Is this one played ok? I am sure it is but starting to question a lot lately and you guys hopefully will sort me...

(It is 2nd hand...)

So, we move on.

Another cross-post. This is from my 2+2 blog where I get a lot of (constructive) criticism about my play and my coaching....

Hey guys.

I won't reply to all the posts above because I simply don't have the time.

I would, however, like to express my gratitude for all the fantastic input and the time you take to look over my problems/bad play etc.

I am just going to try to put my current situation into a few sentences so I hope you will bear with me (I am confused and tired)...

I have no intention of quitting BPC or Coaching For Profits in the near future. Until I think I have done all that I can do using the resources available to me I simply will not quit. (There is a side issue of a contract that I am in but that has exactly zero influence over my decision.)

There has been a constant back-and-forth problem for me of risking burn-out. My life has been pretty strange over the last 10 months and is certainly not what you expect the average married father of two to consist of. However, it is probably similar to that of some very high achievers. Except for the actual "achieving" bit!

My coach for the most part has been Ilidek. Ilidek has always been very protective of me burning out and to be fair, the first time we took a "step back" from the intensive study my results improved so it always seemed like a good route to take.

However... Now I am at a point where I have to make some decisions on how I want to go about things. I mean... Can I go on like this for 2 years? Probably not. Can I go on for 1 more year. Yes for sure. I think I am kind of looking at 1 more year but I have not set an exact time frame for this.

Now.... In 1 year IF I quit I need to look at myself in the mirror and say "Chris, you really did all that you can do." and if that is the case I have absolutely no problem with that.

Can I say that if I quit today? The answer is a simple "no".

Anyone to blame for this? Hmm, not really. I think my case is a pretty specific one. I work a lot more hours than the average full time job and of course I have a family to consider (they have been VERY supportive of me (so far) by the way). So because of all this it is difficult to know how much work to put on me and how much time to give me away from poker. Also factored into this maybe is that Ilidek and I became maybe too friendly at first (for reasons maybe best kept private) and then the soft approach was possibly the "more comfortable" route than the hard approach. I really want to say here though that I think a lot of people would have taken the approach that we have taken so not sure anyone is to blame at all.

The next question is... When I did study did I study the right things? Well my first answer is of course no. I think the blame gets split all ways here and so I don't want to go into it. Needless to say Gordon and the team have improved some things in this regard but I still think its not enough (for a dunce like me). We have some fantastic resources at BPC but I think I needed more checking up on whether it was sinking in (there is a strange contradiction here though in that I believe I got some of the best marks of anyone in test conditions on our material). Overall, mistakes have been made here and I have to take 90% of the blame for this.

What's next? Simply put I am going to burn out. I did it twice in 10 months so far. First time scared me out of my wits if I am honest (maybe also contributed to taking easier options) and it was like I was hallucinating, massive anxiety, like an attack of some sort. Second time I felt it coming and although it was mentally/emotionally painful it did not affect me so much. I need to do it again. A few times. Get close. Then tell coaches and sit back for 3 days or something. I think its my preferred way forward now.

Otherwise I won't be able to look in the mirror. And frankly, that scares the hell out of me.

Faithful followers, masochists and sadists bear with me, hold on tight and let's enjoy the journey.

Thanks again everyone,

Chris.

Why not let the wife play? You do your job and help her studie pokerwise. As mentioned before, you have to much on your plate, what if you get a burn out that will infct your regular job 2? No need to gamble with your health for the little you making from poker. Poker should be fun in the first place.

My advise let the wife be the sick grinder in the house and you just playing your hands for fun without the pressure of making the volume that the programe is telling you to do so.

Good luck, be smart!

Unfortunately i could not agree more with nietzscheF , i myself have done this with my fiancé since her schedule is so light and mine being 12h of work each day and no shifts, it s was hard for her to learn at first and will be in the future but at least she is a wiining player for 8 months now, not much money but it s something ( also she plays just at the micros). Maybe it helps this info maybe not.

Good luck!

You need to enjoy playing and let your mind be free and flow. Only by doing so you get new Ideas and start realy thinking during the hands. Then you can later review those hands and improve a lot. If you just put in a ton of volume your brains are overwhelmed you don't enjoy playing and you also don't improve much.

I wish you the best of luck! With your hard work ethic you can achieve a lot in life but maybe poker is not the best thing for you to put it into.

Hi guys!

One of the reasons I play poker is because I love it.

Even during 15bi down-swing I never had one session I wanted to quit early or did not want to play.

Coach Janez found some leaks a few days ago and now had another session with Jan Somebody which found more similar ones. All passive stuff as usual. Hopefully this time I will learn from this and make that little jump that is gonna blast me into the megabucks!!!!

P.S. I think my wife would be mortified if I asked her to play poker! It is a bit like asking me to do knitting, sewing or craft! But thx for the suggestion ;)

Mini Update.

Over the summer period I have even more workload. I have properties that I have to renovate for students as well as normal full-time job. Basically go to work 0715 and get home around 2100 (weekends too but not quite so many hours).

Not much chance of playing 5.5 hours after that so I am reducing hours for a while. Gordon has said I can do this after the summer period too and try to play more focussed and rest more.

That is also what some people advised in blogs so hopefully this will improve a few things. I am hoping it will help me learn better AND play better at the tables.

Also got holiday to look forward to 29th August and break is needed too.

Good luck all!

Well that was pretty crazy week!!!

Was at work (not poker) around 80 to 85 hours this week so was lucky I am allowed to do less hours at the pokerz or I would be dead!!!

I played 3 hours every day still (rather than 5) and to be honest that was enough. On the first two days I noticed a BIG difference in my mindset at the tables, especially at the beginning. At first I felt like I was actually playing to win money/make the best play rather than some feeling of "got to make it through this session". Not sure if that makes sense!?

Later in the week it was same as before though as I was totally shattered. I was one day looking at Equilab to see the equity of some hand and I tried to count the outs (really simple task) and no matter how hard I tried I could not get my brain to focus on it. I had to leave it. On Saturday I was assembling some furniture and my eyes went so sore I could barely see!

Anyway, I managed to fit in going for few few beers with wife and family. Was tempted to not go but thought a relax like that might do me good and managed to have a small sleep-in on Sunday before going back to work.

I have hopefully only one more week of this crazy hours and then it will be one week of "normal" work hours with the reduced poker hours. I am looking forward to that and playing much more focussed. And then it is holiday week!!!!!!!

Oh, I did not talk much of financial results lately as it was very depressing for me but I can say that last week was a nice winning week! Let's hope that was more due to playing more focussed and less due to nice variance ;)

Take the holliday to clear you mind and reset your goals in something more reasonable. The signs your mind and body are showing they sound alarming, please take them seriously. Convince the wife what a great game poker is and take 3 gears back and enjoy the suffers and glory of her journey in this poker adventure.

Sometimes you have to take a few steps back, to go forward.

So... Sky say they are sending engineer out (no theirs) between 0800-1300 Saturday morning (phone and internet down). Didn't turn up...

I was working so wife phones up... "Ah the appointment never got confirmed by the engineers, sorry we should have let you know".

Sky: "Anyway if your phone line is down that is paid to BT (line rental) so you need to speak to them".

Wife: "But that was the same on Friday when my husband spoke to you so why not tell us that then"

Sky... [second stunned silence].

Wife speaks to BT and gets a different phone working in a different socket and basically proves that there is no fault with the line it is something internal.

By some twisted turn of incredible good run I find an old Sky router (and some spare cables) that has been left by some students in one of my properties....

Swap things around and find it was the router that is FUBARred.

I hate these idiots!!!!

So kinda run good now I know it is router, new one on way, borrowing this one for now.

Managed to get 150 hands in before going back to work and ran good for +2bi also = happy days I guess!

Got to finish off student houses today as handing 5 back over to University tomorrow. Not much to do so hopefully can get back to some poker tonight.

5 sleeps 'til holiday!!!!!!!

Fun hands...

I am looking forward to seeing how things are going to go after my holiday.

My houses are "finished" now. The accommodation officers will go into the properties tomorrow/Tuesday and make sure they are up-to-standard (they have really high standards btw). They will probably pick up on some small things so I will still need to go to them after normal job maybe once or twice this week but fingers crossed nothing major will need doing.

So this week will sort of try out my new poker schedule but its gonna be interrupted by houses then its off on holiday on Saturday morning.

Not sure if its interesting but here will be my new schedule....

I am scared but excited!

I mean there is no way on earth I am going to sleep for 7.25 hours for a start! But I am going to try going to bed at that time and I will go back to my Tae Kwon Do training whenever I wake up in the morning. I used to train at around 0430 in the morning so will just see how it goes. Anything that isn't work/poker is probably going to help my game anyway (and be good for me).

It is going to be very hard for me to stick to this schedule because it does not even look like a schedule to me, it looks like a load of lazing around (Thinly veiled brag? Not really ;) ) but the idea is to give my brain a chance to learn more effectively so its what I am going to do.

Thanks to all the guys who recommended me to do this ages ago. Let's see how it goes.

Starts Monday 7th September in full effect.

Goals are:-

At least +€1000 in September (monetary goals kinda suck but you get my point)
NL100 in October.
+€5000 month by end of January.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME.

I ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING I PUT MY MIND TO.

I AM A WINNER.

Wish me luck (please) ;)
