BTN: $1.22
SB: $2.46
Hero (BB): $2.20
UTG: $2.70
MP: $0.97
CO: $2.34

Pre Flop: ($0.03) Hero is BB with A :diamond: 4 :club:
4 folds, SB raises to $0.06, Hero calls $0.04

Flop: ($0.12) T :spade: 4  4 :diamond: (2 players)
SB bets $0.06, Hero calls $0.06

Turn: ($0.24) J :spade: (2 players)
SB bets $0.11, Hero raises to $0.36, SB calls $0.25

River: ($0.96) J :diamond: (2 players)
SB bets $0.46, Hero raises to $1.72 all in, SB calls $1.26

We only have 15 hands on villain and he seems tight-ish so far at 20/13 pre-flop.

Preflop my hand is too strong to fold on the BB v SB so my standard line is to just defend in position here. I don't like 3 betting with offsuit weak aces, even though we have an Ace blocker, we are turning a hand that plays well in position into a bluff needlessly.

On the flop we hit Jenga. My opponent CBets for half pot and I decide that flatting is the best option. There aren't many hands in my opponents range that can call a raise here and I get villian to fire some turns before I drop the hammer.

On the turn, my opponents overcards picked up equity, as did all of his spadey hands. Villain bets and I decide now is the time to raise and get value from my hand. I expect to get called by many flush draws, over+gutter, Jx, some strong Tx, and possibly a worse 4x sometimes and I definitely want to punish draws at this point and flatting is too risky. I make my sizing quite large to set up for a juicy river value bet.

On the river, we are faced with an interesting card. We are only really afraid of Jacks full and Tens full, though it would seem Tens full would probably bet /3bet turn. My opponent leads for just under half pot. My assumption with villains bet sizing is that villain is trying to blocker bet with either QQ-AA or possibly it's a cheap bluff with busted spades. Villain could just have the nuts here and be betting out so as not to miss value. NL2 villains do play pretty face up with the strong parts of their range usually. My instincts said shove and get value from his over pairs and worse 4x (turns out there is quite a bit in villains range assuming he steals a reggish amount from SB). On the other hand, the though crossed my mind that this all looks a bit weird, NL2 villains don't often bluff river and villain can definitely have Jx here a fair bit.

I put what I thought was a reasonable range into my equilab for what he might call a river shove with:

KK-QQ, AdAs, AdAc, AsAc, JhJc, TdTh, TdTs, ThTs, AcJc, JhTh, Ac4c, Kc4c, Qc4c, Jc4c, 6c4c, 5c4c, 4c3c, AdJh, AdJc, AsJh, AsJc, AcJh, Ad4c, As4c, Kd4c, Kh4c, Ks4c, JhTd, JhTs, JcTd, JcTh, JcTs

This is perhaps a little too optimistic upon reflection and even v this, we win at showdown when called 48%.

If our villain folds all overpairs, then we win only 20% of time when called.

I think a call is just much better overall, but I am not really sure.

Thanks for reading

Ali

I prefer 3betting this hand preflop, but we can also call, of course. I like the flop and turn play, but I would just call the river since I can't see worse hands calling our raise.

Till the river it is ok. On river we overplay our hand. There is no need to push with our hand when every J beat us and we will get called only by hands that beat us.

P.S. You can make a bigger raise on turn.

I really dont like the river play, he's not calling with anything other than a jack or trying to push him off a split

Looks reasonable for him to have a jack, even JT is in his range

I honestly think it's close on the river, i can't see a hand he's donking with here as a bluff but i guess we just call, don't feel great about it but yeah it's only half pot bet

All 4x are equal on the river.

This is mostly what I am thinking too. We MIGHT get called by a total fish with overpairs in very rare occasions, but we are crashing into a Jx hand way too often to make that play profitable. 4x will usually call as well, but in that case we are only going to chop the pot.

Overpairs are not betting river, and are not calling the raise. They are aware that any Jx beat them... :)

With all the Jx in his range you do not have to worry that much. :)

I made a mistake in forgetting that all 4x are equal. It turns out it's actually close between a fold and a call when villain donks river. I think given villain is practically an unknown we call the half pot bet and take a note of what he turns up with.

I was also 4 tabling zoom and I think I was too zeroed in on the absolute strength of my hand instead of taking proper time to consider that my hand is marginal at river in relative terms.

This was a good lesson and I'm glad I inspired a fair bit of discussion. Thank you all. Back to 2 tabling zoom in the meantime.

I'm inclined to agree with you now.

Just call on the river. I have easy rule for these situation - with bottom FH on double paired board I don´t do the agro actions.
