Never Induce A LAG

I take a look at Betfair (iPoker) as its been a while and find I have 3 buy-ins for 2NL -- and decide to try to run up a roll :f_cool:
This could be interesting or it could be totally standard for some -- as usual comments on play welcome!

I isolate the table Trump and get min cold 4-bet (try saying that will a mouthful of spaghetti!) by a LAG in the SB -- and although its not a lot of hands he clearly likes to 3B a lot.

iPoker - €0.02 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

SB: 98 BB (VPIP: 37.04, PFR: 31.48, 3Bet Preflop: 30.43, Hands: 56)
BB: 114.5 BB (VPIP: 27.94, PFR: 21.08, 3Bet Preflop: 6.33, Hands: 208)
UTG: 74.5 BB (VPIP: 10.71, PFR: 5.36, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 56)
CO: 24.5 BB (VPIP: 38.89, PFR: 37.04, 3Bet Preflop: 5.56, Hands: 56)
Hero (BTN): 104.5 BB

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has A♣ J♥

fold, CO raises to 2 BB, Hero raises to 7 BB, SB raises to 12 BB, fold, fold, Hero calls 5 BB

I do not fold to min-raises much -- and definitely not PF and not from a LAG.
I still believe his range is tends to be on the strong side -- big Aces, KQs and TT-AA plus maybe some other freaky stuff but even without the wild cards I still have enough equity to call..

Flop: (27 BB, 2 players) J♠ 8♦ J♦
SB bets 13.5 BB, Hero raises to 27 BB, SB calls 13.5 BB

Flop not bad :f_eek:
I am thinking a min-raise looks weaker than a call -- really bluffy or perhaps a scared flush draw. I hope to get re-raised but figure SB will call with a large part of his range -- and he gets sticky here with weak draws and combos.
How many think I get shoved on by QQ+? Calling is more sensible but ... LAG :f_ugly:

Turn: (81 BB, 2 players) Q♣
SB checks, Hero checks

Betting the Turn looks really strong and even though the Q hits some of his range -- checking looks weak or flush-drawage -- and I want to induce as his weak draws wont call -- BB has less than pot-sized stack left and there is only 1 street of betting left.

River: (81 BB, 2 players) K♥
SB bets 59 BB, Hero ??

So here we are -- plan works to perfection but the K is not so super great. Now his QQ/KK have got there and AK is going to want to showdown. So why jam with it?
How much air does he have here?

I think preflop and flop are ok. Villain 3bets a lot but his cold 4bet might be very tight, we can't know that.
I would bet turn too to charge his FDs, AQ,KK,AA.

As played I think I would call OTR. After our turn check he could bet with AK,AQ,KQ,QQ,KK,AA and some random busted draws? He can jam river because it is only 2/3 of the pot.

ye i can imagine him having alot of the time a K, Q here. you showed lots of weakness so he doesnt give you the J often , thats why he bets probably

The main problem of all micro limit players is not the strategy they choose but that they do not observe the game and do not take notes.
For 200+ hands you should have some observations on villain.
Preflop, as we do not have info,it is ok. You can think of bluff 4 b too.
I do not like min raising the flop.Raise normal size.
Betting turn is right for me. You charge overpairs, draws...
OTR you can call and of course take a note.

I learned that aggression is the way to go. Bet turn for sure. You can always x river if villain x as well.

What is really funny about this is that -- although I do not disagree with what you say -- for a post about observing opponents you failed to notice that I was playing the SB not the BB :f_eek:

I made a typo but the hand history correctly identifies villain. :f_drink:
I have only 56 hands on SB -- which is not so much -- I agree 200+ I would normally have a better read.

Re taking notes
Although I do it -- its really not so important at the uber-micros IMO -- as I do not see the same players very often -- the player pool is so much larger plus 95% play very much as expected for their stats. I agree for some players having notes is def. good -- and particularly the reasonable LAGs as they are the trickiest to play against.

Look at the SPR. There is only 1 bet left and betting the Turn versus draws means putting villain all-in...

This is kind of a silly post -- because at 2NL just bet your goods hands etc. but this was for me an interesting spot because of the way the board ran out and villains profile and 4-bet PF. Also -- 2NL is minimum-risk for trying our some weird lines for LOLZ...

IMO he likely jams OP and nut-draws on the Flop -- maybe not -- or he calls the min-Raise and check-folds a lot on the Turn (with the draws).

This is a risk-vs-return question.

Agreed -- but what value hands can he bet that I will call?
Sure its 2NL and the circus is in town -- IMO his hand should be nuts or air. In which case -- what air does he have here? Then I can work out if a call is +EV or not.

FWIW I did call -- mainly as I had induced and I figured he plays KK/QQ differently pre and on the Flop (bigger 4-bet and C-bet).

Just for fun -- is anyone prepared to take a stab at what villain had?

Completely fine. Draws are mostly between 30% and 48% in which you are always favourite. No matter what the river brings, you have made your money OTT. Therefore, I still would bet the turn.

With regards to your question, Nuts to Air ratio is indeed a highly discussed topic among literature and the question remains how light we should call. For instance, Andrew Seidman (Easy Game, 2011) states that we should call anything that wins more than 50% of the time against a random hand. Seidman further explains an example in which he sits at the table with a maniac. A hand like AT becomes a snap-call pre-flop when villain goes AI and even though he would get stacked off by Aces, it is the right decision since villain's range is unbalanced.

Therefore, I'd like to ask you the question, if you rule out QQ and KK, do you think calling was the right decision regardless the outcome? How light do you think you could have called against villain?

However, that's just theory. Personally, I think it's a fold OTR since NL2 players don't bluff and most probably you will face a nutted range :)

What is really funny is that I do not say a word about positions an I do not know why did you decide that but as I am not prepared to read 1-2meter long posts on what a fish I am, I will not make it a question... :)

Take it easy dude -- I was pulling your leg. Your posts are almost always insightful and worth reading but today maybe you are *full of emotion* to paraphrase yourself :f_biggrin:
It was just ironic that your post on observing missed something obvious -- it does not really change what you say which I certainly do not disagree with.
Of course we all miss things -- the mind has a habit of seeing what it wants to see or what it thinks is there. That is a whole topic on its own...

You are right about the 2 meter long posts -- I gotta try to be more precise lol

I cannot really rule out KK/QQ here -- but I did think he likely plays those hands differently on the earlier streets. I do not have a concrete read on him though -- it was just a feeling.

As for calling with anything that wins more than 50% -- I am resuming this means to shoves PF. On the River with a ton of money (if a *ton* exists at 2NL lol) in the pot its obviously a lot less than 50% depending on SPR.
The 50% figure is incorrect by the way unless you play in rake-free games.

The reason I called -- on iPoker you only get 15 seconds to make your play -- is because I had induced, I thought he likely would play KK and probably QQ differently as mentioned, and he was a LAG capable of floating/bluffing with air given enough justification (dry board and a weak Turn play). I wont claim I did detailed equity calculations on the fly in 15 seconds but this is def. an area I need to work on if I am going to beat the limits above 25NL for a decent amount.

I was surprised by what he showed :f_eek:
