I guess it has some similarities with situations when you 3bet on the blinds and player IP calls you. Ofcourse, ranges are different and effective stacks are different, but some concepts are the same.

Hi Alleen,
This 30% is only true if the size of the pot and the money invested does not change postflop. Otherwhise it is not true. If you put 20 bb into the pot postflop and villain does the same but you only take it 30% of the cases, it is not a good business.:)
Or my understanding of your thought is not correct.
But I think it is quite optimistic that 30% of the cases you can take the preflop pot without pumping the pot postflop. Even if that is the case on the other hand you might lose money in the other 70% which is more than that you win in the 30%.

Not sure, maybe I'm wrong on this, or maybe I didn't write it properly. If SB opens 2,5bb, our pot odds to call from the BB are 30%, so we need 30% of equity to make the call profitable. Equity is percentage in which our hand will win on various boards postflop vs villain's range. True that we calculate pot odds considering only the money which is currently in the pot and we cannot know how the hand will develop postflop, but if we win the pot in 30% of cases (no matter will we invest more money postflop or not), our preflop call will be profitable because we will also win those 30% of preflop money on average. Ofcourse, it all depends on our skills will we realize 100% of equity, but it's a rough guide.

On the side note, with T2s vs a standard SB open range (37%) we have 36% of equity.

I don't agree. 30% pot odds is only true for the preflop case. What you say is only true if you will be all-in preflop with that 1,5 bb call. Otherwhise postflop will change everything. But I would not like to spam your thread, I just took a look at the english PS side and wanted to comment as I like calculating equities in excel as well.:-)

No probs, just comment whatever and whenever you want. :)

I agree with you that preflop equity is calculated with the assumtion that the postflop action will be check/check/check. I know what you mean. But in how many cases will that be true? Close to 0% of cases, I would say. My logic - If we make a call, sometimes we will invest 0 bb's postflop, sometimes we will invest entire stack. Sometimes we will hit a fullhouse and sometimes we will complettely miss the board. But if we play this situations infinite number of times and we have 30% equity, we are suposed to win in 30% of cases by the river, which means that we are suposed to win 30% of preflop pot on average (with the assumtion that we and our opponent have the same skills). Why would we otherwise even consider pot odds and equity in non all-in situations, both preflop and postflop?

We make our decisions on every street, but with the assumtion that we will win the hand often enough to make our move profitable (sometimes by the river and sometimes on earlier streets - like when we are bluffing). For example, we can't make a preflop call BB vs SB and win the hand without seeing the flop.

If you invest x bb postflop and so does villain as well, and you win it 30% of the time, then your post ev is 0.3*x-0.7*x=-0.4x for the postflop invested money. for the preflop invested money is good invested(or 0 EV), but the postflop invested is not ok for 30% (-0.4x). it should be 50%+rake for BE...

Yeah, I see now you are right. The proper expression would be "we need to win that preflop pot in 30% of cases". I was missguided by pot equity and pot odds. :f_thumbsup:

Very tought week behind me. It's obvious I'm quite struggling with NL25. I've played this limit for about 3 months and earned just 172,48 USD with the rakeback. Monetary results per hour were better at NL16, but there is no way back now. I simply have to beat NL25 no matter what and become a winning reg here.

Tbh, I feel like I'm not improving alot latelly. I know exactly what my leaks are, but obviously not doing enough to fix them. It's time to fix that attitude! I have just about 30 pages of "The Mental Game of Poker" left and wrote like 40 pages of notes. When I finish it (hope it will be this week or the next one), will concentrate on specific parts of it (the ones I find the most important for me) but also start to work on my technical game more serious. Yesterday I had one AHA moment while analysing NL25 hands (have almost 70k now) and will try to use this information from now on. Will tell you what it is if it will work. :f_biggrin:

what about your NL10 results? were you beating it with a relatively better winrate? I am thinking about moving up to 25 from 10...

NL10 results were better than NL16. I definitelly recommend to move up to NL16 before NL25 (if you play at Pokerstars).

Was always wondering what are the people cold calling 3bets out of position with. Doesn't make sense to me...

Poker Stars, $0.10/$0.25 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite.

SB: $25 (100 bb)
BB: $43.40 (173.6 bb)
UTG: $25 (100 bb)
MP: $19.81 (79.2 bb)
CO: $25 (100 bb)
Hero (BTN): $26.39 (105.6 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with A♦: A♥:
UTG folds, MP raises to $0.62, CO folds, Hero raises to $1.70, SB calls $1.60, 2 folds

Flop: ($4.27) 5♦: 2♠: 5♣: (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $2.50, SB calls $2.50

Turn: ($9.27) 8♥: (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $5, SB calls $5

River: ($19.27) 5♠: (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $10.10, SB raises to $15.80 and is all-in, Hero calls $5.70

Results:

Spoiler

$50.87 pot ($2.00 rake)
Final Board: 5♦: 2♠: 5♣: 8♥: 5♠:
SB showed 5♥: A♠: and won $48.87 ($23.87 net)
Hero showed A♦: A♥: and lost (-$25 net)

Now it makes sense why they do that.

One of the biggest losing weeks since I started, so it's not a good situation at all. Lost almost everything I've earned after moving to NL25 (the bankroll was 2.100,00 USD for moving up) so if this continues, there is a realistic chance that will have to drop down to NL16 again. That really sucks because I've played 75k 25NL hands so far without having to move back.. :f_rolleyes: The results are -250,80 USD (-1,34 bb/100). :f_cry:

On the other hand, the all in EV is just -59,72 USD, so I was obviously running very bad at showdowns. If I can estimate the variance correctly, I think I was running quite below expected overall, not just at showdowns, but there is a chance that I am subjective on this.

About the AHA moment I had, it obviously didn't work, at least not by now, but I realized that I cold call too much and 3bet too less in every single Position vs Position situations, so I concluded that this is a part of the reason why my non-showdown winnings are that bad. I'm cold calling too much preflop. That with folding too much to flop cbets, especially raising much too less vs flop cbets is most likelly a disasteress combination. Then I decided to 3bet all the hands I have in mixed range except I have a strong reason to just cold call. That didn't work this week.

However, I still believe this should be the right way and will continue to do this. Actually, you can see players like asimos regularly doing it (+ he 3bets hands like suited connectors IP vs unknowns even though the common knowledge says to cold call those). Since one of my prahistorical leaks is 3betting too less, I will just give this aproach a longer try. I have to change something in my game and that seems like a good start. After that will work on my play vs flop cbets.

I completed "The Mental Game of Poker" and agree with all the good things players are saying about the book. The knowledge in it is really priceless. I made 50 pages of notes and picked up some very good information. It helped me with my mental game so far, I became more aware of some things happening in my head, but the fact is that I need alot more of hard work on this. I need to push very very hard to make some flaws dissapear from my Unconscious Competence and correct things to get inside. So, I started to read it again and this time will concentrate on something I consider my biggest mental leak - the lack of confidence.

Anyway, what I picked up so far didn't stop me to feel shitty about the recent results and it didn't prevent my poker results to affect my real life. It's not like I'm depressed or something, but I feel like... you know... a bit down.

That's the beauty of the book. It just makes you realize that we should never stop learning in order to grow. It's an acceptance or an embracement as one might call it. I hope you will find a way to go through with NL25 my friend. Keep it up! :f_thumbsup:

Hi mate, not sure why but did not get email you had updated for ages!!!

Good work finishing TMGOP - it is really good book.

Hopefully you will have big win at NL25 and turn that loss around but at the end of the day - so long as you are improving it does not really matter... The big time will come!

Good luck amigo! ;)
