Hello,

In the following hand I have called the 4bet. After the hand I did some Equilab analysis and I can see that my equity was only around 40%. I am sorry for my simple questions but as far as I understand, I should have folded in this spot, right?

Poker Stars, $0.01/$0.02 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

SB: $11.01 (550.5 bb)
Hero (BB): $2.73 (136.5 bb)
UTG: $9.37 (468.5 bb)
MP: $2 (100 bb)
CO: $2.05 (102.5 bb)
BTN: $2.14 (107 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with K♦: A♥:
2 folds, CO raises to $0.06, 2 folds, Hero raises to $0.18, CO raises to $0.42, Hero calls $0.24

Flop: ($0.85) 5♣: A♦: 6♥: (2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks

Turn: ($0.85) 4♠: (2 players)
Hero bets $0.50, CO calls $0.50

River: ($1.85) 3♣: (2 players)
Hero bets $0.70, CO calls $0.70

Results:

Spoiler

$3.25 pot ($0.11 rake)
Final Board: 5♣: A♦: 6♥: 4♠: 3♣:
Hero showed K♦: A♥: and won $3.14 ($1.52 net)
CO mucked K♠: K♣: and lost (-$1.62 net)

Are you sure that villain will 4b only for value in this spot?
If yes, then why do you 3b in the first place?
Folding your hand is not the best you can do...

Thank you. These are some very good questions to consider.

What would you say villain's 4-betting range would be here?

I wouldn't fold it. You can definitely call and see the flop or you can even shove AK. When the pot is already so big that 40% will be enough to make it profitable, I guess.
Villain could 4bet QQ+,AKs,AKo and then bunch of weaker AXs as a bluff.

Did you think that question through? If villain 4bets us only with value it definitely doesn't mean we should not 3bet him. That actually means we should 3bet him more, because he probably doesn't defend enough = he will be folding a lot or calling with weaker holdings and if he 4bets it is easy decision for us. That also makes his 4bet % so low that we face a 4bet from him very rarely = we don't have to worry about that. Just 3bet him all day long.

I would generally avoid calling 4bets (except for trapping reasons vs players that we know are 4bet bluffing us alot), especially when out of position. AKo I would shove vs 4bet in this situation. Your question is about pot odds and equity. Equity needs to be higher than pot odds to call profitably. After our call pot will be $0,87, so we need to put $0,24 into the pot of $0,87, which means that our pot odds are 0,24/0,87*100 = 27,59%. If our equity is 38,82%, we can profitably call because we are putting 27,59% into something from which we will get 38,82%.

Imagine you and your friends collect $100. You have to give $27,59 and they told you that you will get $38,82 at the end from those $100.

You are missreading me again....
If hero is 3 betting and then folding vs a 4 bet, then he should not 3b... as it is not ok to fold this strong hand vs 4b.
Me, personally, I am not folding.

Well, you got right the value range, but some villains may have some bluffs - KJ, KT, some Axs...

Alleen86,

Thank you for this explanation. It was really helpful.

Pre-flop is indeed an interesting discussion, but as played villain had only $1,55 left on the river and I would push here in a pot of $1,85 for value.

Cheers,

+1

On 2NL also, in late positions you never go wrong shoving AK preflop. And it's definitely true, if you think about folding to a 4bet it may be fine to call, BUT if you expect them to call a lot worse too, 3betting is better.
