Beating micro SNGs - Are you insane or just a glutton for punishment?

Still proceeding with my house cleaning, preparing for the new Danish gambling legislation.

I have cleaned out my accounts on Bet24, VC Poker and Partypoker, so now I only have money on Betfair and Pokerstars, a total of just over $100.

During the remainder of November and through out December, I expect to focus mostly on Betfair, but I also want to give Pokerstars another shot.

Any other Danes active here on PS? How do you handle this upcoming issue and how do you prepare for it?

In terms of poker results, last night was indeed a poor night as I lost practically everything I played. The losses was mostly due to someone other than me getting lucky ♠_frown:

Well, 5 years go fast when you are busy

I didn't play much poker since the Danish legislation changed and it became quite cumbersome to log in to the poker rooms (for danes). 888 didn't even get a license and as such wasn't available until recently. I think the worst part was that it interfered with my thinking and I got sorts of a negative expectation for the play.

My total results playing the low stakes SNGs from 2007 to 2011 amounted to approximately $750 - by no means impressive and don't even begin to calculate a hourly rate on that, but overall it is at least a positive result and I had mostly good times playing.

So now I have had a break for the same time as I played and when I heard 888 was back with their usual $8 offer, I had to give it a go. Unfortunately they don't have my favourite SNG anymore (the 40 man $0,88) but they have something similar. I must admit my play kinda stink even more than before and I lost my $8 quite fast and since I didn't really feel comfortable playing, I didn't want to deposit any money.

I felt like playing a bit more and I realized I actually still had a little more than $30 on PokerStars so I dug out my little cardboard folder with the codes required to log on in Denmark (something I really load since I feel it is awkward, old fashioned and sort of ridiculous - pretty much the main reason why I rarely feel like playing) and I started playing a few micro stake SNGs. I then realized that if you use their app you actually don't need to login with the extra code - you can login in the regular way from before the new rules. Since then I have played around hundred SNGs, a few MTTs and some cash games. Pretty odd that such a little thing can influence my game so much, maybe I am stranger than I thought.

One thing that has changed is my patience and I call way to much when I play regular SNGs so I decided to try out some of the hyper formats. I started with the 36 man $1 knock out SNGs and they actually is very similar to the 40 man on 888, maybe even a bit more loose, which I thought was impossible. 36 players takes turn going all-in and just about everything gets a call. This means very high variance and even though I place quite often, it is not very rewarding. I also tried the 24 man $3 and they are just as loose. Eventually the money in my account was quickly disappearing, and I thought "What the heck, let's try the $5 a couple of times and take a short break before redepositing". The 24 man $5 was more like poker though, and sometimes players even folded!!! I am not sure why the difference seem so big but it is really noticeable. I am probably just running hot, but I really feel comfortable and the results are very positive. Since this is a very small sample of about 100 SNGs so it is not in any way dependable.

The important take away (for me) is that the games are enjoyable and I can play with using that ridiculous folder with codes that danish law requires

BR on Stars around $100

I haven't been playing to much over the last couple of days, but still I've managed to place in a couple of $5 24 man KOs and with quite decent ROI too. I've placed 2 and 3 two times each and it is quite interesting how much the bounties actually means for the total prize money. There is about $6 between 3rd and 2nd, but the two times I came third, I collected no bounties. In the two tourneys where I was 2nd I added almost $10 in bounties, so even if it is important to stay in the tourney until you're in the money it is also important to knock down a few to maximize winnings. Probably not news to most of you, but I didn't play that many KOs so I guess I didn't really adjust to how the prize is distributed. Another benefit of taken out other players on the way to the final table, is that you will have a large enough stack to actually collect the bounty - in one of the tourneys I was all-in 2-3 times before I actually got a bounty.

Any way, the BR is now around $140 on stars

So another 2 years went by with very limited poker sessions on my part. 2017 was crazy busy at work, but now it has cooled a bit off.

I feel a little rusty when I play - I don't know if the game changed a lot lately, but I have lost my feeling for it I think. It will probably take quite some time to get back. Let's see how long I last this time.
