Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has Q♣ A♥

Hero raises to 3.5 BB, fold, fold, fold, SB calls 3 BB, fold

Flop: (8 BB, 2 players) J♥ A♠ 2♠
SB checks, Hero bets 4 BB, SB calls 4 BB

Turn: (16 BB, 2 players) A♦
SB checks, Hero bets 8 BB, SB raises to 16 BB,

Hero?

At the time I thought I could 3bet the turn for value. Now I wonder if vs a decent player I should just call.

Even though the minraise throws me off a little. I did not expect a decent player to minraise in this spot and thought if they minraise in this spot, they probably also have a lot of worse Ax in their range.

What´s your opinion.

Is 4b/fold an option?

Is 4b-shoving an option?

Spoiler

Hero raises to 92.5 BB and is all-in, SB calls 76.5 BB

River: (201 BB, 2 players) T♦

SB shows J♣ J♠ (Full House, Jacks full of Aces)
(Pre 57%, Flop 97%, Turn 84%)
Hero shows Q♣ A♥ (Three of a Kind, Aces)
(Pre 43%, Flop 3%, Turn 16%)
SB wins 189.2 BB

I think folding is too weak. There are only a few hands that beat us.
If we call the potsize is 48BB, but what if he bets like 48bb+ on the river??

Obviously I cannot fold to his minraise. The only question is should I 4bet/call off, 4bet/fold, shove or just call.

I don't know about this guy but standard villain should not call any weaker AX hands from SB vs UTG. I personally don't call weaker than AQ there and if this villain calls weaker AX (AJ), well you are beat :) He also has JJ in his range.

Because UTG opening range is so strong and SB is oop he should't flat wide. That is why I think you might very well be beat here. But since villain might be a fish and his raise is so small, maybe you can call and see river? =)

There are 4 combos of hands that are beating you OTT (IN, AJs). I don't think he would call any offsuit hands from SB against 3,5bb raise from UTG. The problem is though, that you don't beat that much that would raise OTT. I don't think he would be semi bluffing with flushdrawes here once you bet when the second ace comes. Also I don't see him c/r with ATs here. I don't know how he would get there anyway.

So I guess OTT is a call. At least that's what I would do. The reason is, I don't really see him doing this with worse aces. I don't see many bad aces here to be honest.

The question is: what we should do if villain will decide to bet on let's say a blank river. I guess it depends on the size of the bet. But I think I would call most of the time so I would have a reason to whine about later

We cannot fold vs a Min raise.

You can just call and probably call most rivers. I don't know about jamming. AK, probably a jam. But AQ, just call/call IMO.

this is never a 3bet unless villain is retarded. folding is not even terrible but you arguably have implieds to call

From the SB I would only call with AQ 99 88 77, villain must have misplayed AJ or 22.
You could call but will not improve much. Folding is out of the question.

If you have trouble with such situations, what if you just checkback the flop and play it slower? When I expect someone to have a very tight calling-range I don't see any need to cbet this flop without having at least Top-Two.

But, as played... I would just call and see it as a way-ahead-/way-behind situation. There's still some randomness in the players' ranges that we see worse Ax sometimes. Shoving would definitely be overplayed and I like to take the least-variance-heavy approach :)

I would just call his minraise. First reason is that he might be bluffing (thinking that this might be a good scare card) so I would let him to bluff the river, too. I don't think we have to be afraid of draws, they would probably semi-bluff OTF, not OTT when board paired. Second reason is that there is a possibility that he is doing that with Ax, but I'm not sure if he is calling with worse kicker. I believe that with 3betting we will isolate ourselves vs better hands (fullhouses or AK).

Thanks everybody for your input. I think I´ve been here before and this is quite a clear call actually. The river will not be easy to play, though, if we face a bet on a blank...

As DirtyBasementKid says, it depends on the river size probably. Against some players, we might just fold to any size. Against fishy players who are likely to overplay Ax we might call smaller sizes.

But there is simply no good alternative on the flop.

I am not sure about the suggestion of checking this flop to avoid a turn spot like this. I am giving Villain the option to take a free card, when my hand could be quite vulnerable. But it does control the pot and may trigger some bluffs, so it has something going for it, too.

Yes, we are giving free-cards. But if we assume Villain has a very tight calling-range, what cards are we really afraid of? Only flushdraws (aren't too many) and 2-outers for his pocket-pairs. Let me give you an example... this one is OOP, but it triggered something pretty cool...

My thought was, that we aren't getting 3 streets of value, and he might barrel his flushdraws himself and turn some stuff into a bluff as well. Protection is not that important on a board like that the tighter the ranges get imo. Mayb the rest thinks differently. I am open to opinions :)

I agree. Check raising the turn is maybe too strong although a lot of equity. If he is calling preflop with AJs ATs JJ TT 99 I may raise turn though.

i'm just wondering if anyone has a hand in which a reg turn check/minraise on a paired board was a worse hand than trips good kicker. seems that a lot of people think we are actually ahead super often here and i might have to fix that in my play...

i'll state my thought again: against a typical micros reg in this spot, you are way behind and drawing. no nl10 reg is retarded enough to think he's ahead with like ATs, or be like "yeah i'll minraise a flush draw, he'll definitely read me for the nuts and fold. there's also definitely no risk of flush drawing dead or anything"
