Good point. Doesn't mean much in one hand, but makes a difference over time (at least as much as polishing preflop ranges back and forth for days and weeks and months).
Id say its as important, no more no less. Every decision you make be it preflop sizing or hand selection when taking certain actions are all going to be very important to you. It's no good doing random things with random hands without any planning. And will all go along way to improve hand reading skills. Telling micro stakes players not to learn about ranges isn't going to help them improve imo.
(My emphasis in quote)
Where do I do that? This is vastly different. I talk about sizing.
But I do understand what you refer to. Unlike many (perhaps most, perhaps even all) posters, I place smaller emphasis on preflop decisions than postflop decisions. The rationale is simple: Preflop bets are small. Bets on turn and river are big.
Thus, for instance, acquiring a GTO preflop squeeze range from the small blind before you know how to play very well postflop is detrimental. That imagined "auto-profit" that you may very well actually have is then eaten up and more those times your squeeze gets called.
Another point is that versus sub-optimal competition, well-polished preflop ranges (against imagined GTO opponents with 100 bb stacks) are far from optimal. Such ranges are very important only much higher up than beginner tables. I have seen pretty awful ranges produced by Snowie saying e.g. that you should fold JTs on the button to a UTG 3 bb open. And people think it is the word of god. Wow!
A third point is that so many preflop decisions are so marginal, that it, everything else disregarded, pretty much doesn't matter what you do. But if you do not disregard everything else, and consider how well you and your opponents play after the flop, then it does matter what you do. But have you seen any player here say something along the lines "I squeeze somewhat less than <yourfavouritecoachhere> advocates because I'm uncertain about how to play certain flops with suited connectors OOP"?
