Quick Update

Just a quick update about last week. My week was fairly busy as my wife and I took another trip to Caesar's Windsor. That's why my volume is so low. I had a great run playing the super turbo freerolls on 888 and managed to move up to the $0.40 STT. I'm super pumped for the good variance because I've move to the level for rebuilding from the massive down swing. One more step closer to getting to my first goal of a $1000 bankroll. Now I'm playing regular speed STTs which I think is better for my TAG strategy as I can play more poker before the push/fold ICM game starts. My daily goal of 40 tourneys has to come down because a round now takes over an hour. I am targeting 20 games/day.

I'm feeling rested and motivated so I'm sure I will be back playing NL2 cash before the end of the month.

Until next time,
Nate

3 day Update

  • 40 STT
  • -1.75 BI
  • ITM = 32.5%
  • -4.51% ROI

The last few days have been trying to say the least. Variance has been a bitch. If I had won half the pots that I had gotten it in good, well lets say I'd have a positive ROI. It ain't no thing though, cause I wanted every one of those calls. Yesterday I found myself actually laughing out loud because of the absurdity of the bad luck. I've also focused on saying "good" when I'm struck by a bad beat or a cooler. Saying "good" means that I'm happy they got lucky, I'm happy they will continue to play poorly, and I'm happy I get the opportunity better myself as a player and move up in the stakes and reach my goals.

I've notice that I can fall into auto pilot and not take into account my opponents tendencies. Especially the blinds when I'm in late position. I think I can save a lot of bets by not attempting to steal from defenders/loose passive players and pick up more bets by attacking tight players, that are happy to give up their blinds. Training to think like this will definitely help when I start to get 1k+ hands on regs, so I start looking through the HUD to find holes in their games to exploit.

Today I think I'm gonna take a break from STT's and play some FLH. I don't have the BR to play NL2 yet, but I'm properly stacked to play limit.

Also, I just watched the first episode of the new SyFy show Blood Drive and I think its great. I love old grindhouse flicks and this show is a combo of a grindhouse car chase flick and a grindhouse splatter flick. Its my new favorite summer show!

Until next time,
Nate

2 Day Update

  • 711 Hands $0.02-$0.04 FL (FR & 6max)
  • 4 Freerolls (2 5+R SC)
  • -$0.04 & -SC45
  • ITM = 25.00%
  • ROI = 71.07%

So, I had a rough go at the cash games on Thursday. Played well, no real major mistakes, and hit the bad side of variance. I wasn't going for huge volume, was playing 1 or 2 tables in the living room in front of the TV. Yesterday, took an easy day with some 710. My first order of dabs came in, so I wanted to enjoy some cannabis. I also started my twitter page https://twitter.com/RootsmanTilt and had Freeroll Friday, while Live Tweeting. Only played 4 games and managed a late cash. It was in the Facebook Canada Community Freeroll. I know I could have done better, but I ghosted the tourney when there was 73 left. It was getting late (9:30pm) and I knew my wife & I needed to get our walk in for the day. I had some run good and built a decent stake ($63,000+). My thinking was this;

  • This tourney runs daily
  • It has a slow structure, so I should be able to go deep fairly often
  • I needed to make sure I get my steps
  • My wife expects I go for a walk
  • I knew if I ghosted the rest of the tourney I would still cash, based on my stack

So with all that said, I decided it was better for me to sit out the rest of the tourney, and get my steps with my wife. I did and cashed, 27th/307. Did we ever get a good walk in. 14k+ Steps and over 12km.

The goals for today is to get another good walk in, make a vid to lobby DNegs to stake me in the WSOP Main Event which he is offering through his VLOG, play at least 1000 hands at $0.02-$0.04 FLH on 888, and Live tweet the session.

Until next time,
Nate:f_thumbsup:

Reality, Intentions, Goals, Staking and Life

Yeah that's pretty much what's been on my mind since the beginning of the week. I want to run through each of these points and talk about why it may have moved to the for front of my mind, where I'm at with each aspect currently, and what I want to see happen in the future.

Reality
Well that came in the form of my bro-in-law confronting my wife and I about when we plan to move out. Granted we have been living here for 2 years and we don't intend on staying here forever, it was really the fire under my ass, :f_o: I needed to get more serious about THN and poker. To get serious about building a nest egg and get out on our own again. The goal is late fall, very early spring to be in our own apartment again.

Intentions and Goals

This is important right now because the Summer Solstice was just a few days ago and there is a new moon cycle starting this week as well. My wife is an astrologer and keeps me up on what universal energies are happening. Now this may sound hooky, but astrology is more of a science and because the energies have been observed for 1000's of years, I feel that if you know someone who can interpret the info well, then astrology can be a very effective life tool. So here is my list of Intentions and Goal for the summer season.

  • Play Poker everyday
  • Widen THN online market - National
  • Play 1K hands/day, when I play cash
  • Get backing to play Cash Hold'em
  • Play 40 Turbo Tourneys/day, when I play STT
  • Get backing for playing STT
  • Play 25 MTT/Week
  • Build a nest egg for Angela and I to move out with
  • Start offering Online sales broker product
  • Get staked to play at Caesar's Windsor Cash or Tounrey
  • Move up to NL10

Staking
I've been staked before. I feel like I'm back in really great form and playing better then I have ever before. I have a new understanding of the game, a refined approach and feel its the time to take serious action. In order to make this a viable venture I need to get some capital. I can't afford to shift life money into the bankroll. THN isn't making a ton of money right now. Boosting appointments is a priority right now, I also have several hours a day I can and want to devote to poker. I need to make that time the most profitable as I can. So I intend to approach all appropriate staking opportunities I can find, in an attempt to gain capital to progress quickly up to my first GRODT goal. I intend to do 2week - 1month long deals, rotating between cash and STT, so that I'm not selling 100% of my profitable action at any one time. I'm going to keep all of my MTT action until I can produce for more consistent results.

Life
I just want to cultivate a solid, self sustaining, fulfilling, existence for us. Be happy about and motivated by what I do everyday. Gaining resources by playing poker and running my own online business, has long been a dream of mine. Now I'm at a confidence, skill, knowledge, resourcefulness level, that I'm primed and ready to make my dreams come true. I'm not seeking some amazing, extravagant lifestyle. A tiny house, a sustainable income, and freedom to explore.

Now is the time to change gears, move with purpose, and make it happen!

Until next time,
Nate

Progress Update: July 13, 3017

It's been exactly 3 weeks since I laid out my goals and intentions. Since then things have been added/adjusted a bit and some progress has been made. I've had an influx of inspiration, positivity, confidence, happiness and motivation. for the first time in a very long while, I have a knowingness that I'm on the right path again. Here is a run down of where I'm at currently and some of the things that have happened in the last few weeks.

To start off, I did manage to sell some action on www.PokerMarket.com. Starting off I put out 2 packages and ended up canceling 1. One for STT and one for PLO. The STT action quickly sold out, sorta, more in a minute. I had some run bad playing STT and because of circumstances decided that canceling the PLO action would be best. So, being my first time selling pieces on www.pokermarket.com and because I've never transfered money on 888 before I ran into a little problem running such a small package. The package is for a $16 bankroll to play ¢0.40 Turbo STT, where I'm selling 50% of my action, $8 and only excepting money on 888. The minimum transfer on 888 is only $5 and in full dollar amounts, no cents. I sold $5 quickly and had no choice but to end the sale, putting the last $11 in myself. It was only supposed to run for 1 day and has now been opened to run indefinitely. I'm currently stuck on that deal and had to drop down to the ¢0.10 Turbo STT to rebuild, where I'm holding pretty even. You can check my progress on the rail for the event. STT Run

I have to say I'm really loving having Twitter now, I've basically set the account up only to follow everything poker. I'm following as many pro's as I can find, news sources, freeroll password accounts and just as much dang poker as I can. My followers are still only a few (22), but its growing organically and I hope it continues. Reading about how so many people are doing during the WSOP has been a ton of fun.

I've also tried to use Twitter as a tool to help propel me into realizing a life in poker. This past weekend I took to twitter, sending off a DM to the Poker News account, inquiring about some work here in Canada. I was quickly direct as to where to send in my info. Not having a media/writing resume, I decided the best course of action was to write an impressive essay, outlining why I would be an asset to their team. After emailing the essay, I dropped a quick DM to the right person and I received a quick response letting me know I would hear back at the end of the summer. To me (and my wife) this sounds very promising, but I will just wait and see what happens next.

Ok since this is turning into a massive post, and I have a bunch more things I want to include, I'm going to just stop here for today and continue tomorrow.

Until then,
Nate

Progress Update: August 5, 2017

It's been almost a month since the last time I wrote an update. Some stuff has happened and more has changed, but that's the way she goes! Here is a rundown on where I'm at in life and poker, where my focus is and where I'm headed in the near future.

To start off, I've change the game I'm focusing on. I've move from NLH tournaments to PLO cash games. I decided to shift focus for several reasons. First and foremost, I find playing tons of straight NLH tourneys to get boring and monotonous. I really need to have variety to be happy. Also, after pouring over my PT4 database, PLO is my best game. I have decent winrates over an adequate sample size in PLO2, PLO5, PLO25 and PLO50, although the higher limits do have much smaller samples. I do enjoy PLO way more then Holdem. More complicated decisions, with a greater payoff. At the micros I have an edge because I'm just fundamentally better than most of the field and that's all you really need to win in these games. I think it was a solid decision, only time, and a ton of hands will tell.

I recently closed the STT stake I had running. I took the whole lose, which happened the first 2 days and I chased for a few weeks. I had busted half of the stake on the first day playing $0.40 STTs. The backer and I agreed to let the deal run for as long as I wanted. I also dropped down to $0.10 STT to rebuild the bankroll and then I would return to the original games. I ran basically even for a long time and found I wasn't playing as many games any longer. I was playing more PLO. At the point I decided it was the right time to close the deal. I feel it was the right thing to do.

It's really a bitch these days finding backing for cash games at the micros. Its impossible to sell a package on Poker Market for cash games. I can totally understand why though. So many people have been scammed, and since pokertableratings stopped tracking hands, there is now easy/reliable way for a backer to verify play. The only way, is to only playing Poker Stars and submit a Play History Audit to the backers. Which I understand to be a tedious thing to undertake. Either way, I had to find a way to get a small bankroll to play some PLO. If you can't get strangers to buy your action, then the only option you have, is to hit up the people that you know. I now have a deal with a buddy and will be playing PLO2 Zoom for at least the next 2 weeks.

I have a solid plan for this stake and I'm super confident this will be a very profitable deal. I'm playing top notch, zoom games make it easy to play tons of hands I have enough of a roll to with stand all the swings. If I can stay focused and play solid, this bankroll will grow. Now it's time to get it done.

I am sincerely going to try to write every day or 2 while I'm playing this stake. Sort of like DNegs WSOP vlog, except it's a poor sack of shit playing penny PLO. But as the saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Until next time, GL and run good!
Nate

P.S. I'm opting out of the GRODT challenge. I think to help become less results oriented it's a good idea to not participate and it is sort of a hassle having to report every Monday.

Haha, yes buddy! I've played PLO since the Poker After Dark cash games were played. Which, by the way, is some of the best televised PLO you watch. It actually my best game all time.

Progress Update: August 7, 2017

Swingy, is the best way to describe the last 2 days of playing PLO. Saturday I was up, then by the end of the day I was stuck a few buyins. Yesterday, I only played for a couple hours and smashed the PLO2 6max Zoom tables for 7 buyins.:f_cool::f_thumbsup::f_drink:

I've set some bankroll management rules for this stake, to help ensure it grows properly and limit losses. First, I'm half stacking with auto top up, (buying in for 50bb) until the bankroll is 30 full stack buyins. I'm only checking the bankroll once a week on Mondays. The reason for this to make sure the I'm not focused on results. Its an experiment I've been conducting for the last few weeks and I'm finding that this technique helps keep my mood stable day to day. On the same day that I check the results, I will also be separating any profits over 30 buyins and sending the stakers portion to him. At anytime if the bankroll falls to 20 full buyins, I will start to half stack again. I think these rules will help limit my risk of ruin, while there is no limit on how much I can play or win in any given session.

I had intended to 2 table during this stake, but after playing for a couple days, I think to maintain optimal play through out sessions, while achieving an adequate volume of hands, I will just play a single table. Here is the reasoning behind this decision. Right out of the box, the fact that every time you fold a hand you are moved to a new table, with new players, in different positions. I have to adapt to new situations so quickly, that adding a table only forces me to play a autopilot style of poker and not making the best possible decisions at each and every opportunity. Next, because of the swingy, high variance nature of PLO, adding a 2nd table puts a much larger risk on the bankroll that I don't necessarily need. I also think that I can easily play 1k hands/ day, only playing 1 table. Often I will play more then the 1k goal, but at the beginning I think its a great goal. Obviously I can adjust the goal if I start to notice I'm over shooting the goal for a few days in a row. Then, I can adjust the goal to 1% over the average of the last 3 days, so that I'm always pushing to raise the bar.

I'm a man with an ever evolving plan. Until next time,
Nate
