Hello,

This is my poker blog. Here, I am going to write - mainly for myself - to learn more about PLO. You can view this as kind of my study journal for poker.

I won't go into detail about who I am, I will just mention a few fact about myself so that you get some kind of picture:

- I am 27 years old (soon 28)
- I am married. No children yet.
- I live in a 1-room apartment in Stockholm together with my wife.
- I am a mathematician working towards PhD in statistics.
- I grew my $50 starting capital from pokerstrategy (remember? we got fifty bucks for free back in the days :f_thumbsup:) into over $5000
- In 2013, I was a winning player at NL100. I quit due to boredom.
- When it still existed, I was a hand judge in the Swedish forum. I judged hands up to NL10.

Now I am going to play PLO2 recreationally - as long as it's fun. I hope to be a winning player, but time will tell.

OK, so my first poker assignment is to get better with starting hands. In the coming posts, I am going to post starting hands that I am unsure of, run them in ProPokerTools, and write from what positions I can open raise them.

See you again!
(Thanks Kyyberi for helping me setting up ProPokerTools)

Ok, so here are some starting hands I had to look up:

(T7)64 - Open from BTN
(KT)(34) - Open from BTN
(46)(67) - Open from MP (I was very surprised by this one, I thought it would be only from BTN)
JJ(97) - Open from CO
(K5)(J3) - Open from CO (surprised here too, thought this would be button only
A(KQ4) - Open from CO
(KJ)(96) - Open from MP (thought this would be CO, if I change 6 to a 7 its an open from EP)
(Q4)TJ - Open from BTN
(AJ5)Q - Open from MP (if I change 5 to 6 its an open from first from CO)
(AK6)7 - Open from MP (I thought this would be CO)
(2345) - Open from BTN
(J2)(T7) - Open from BTN (Thought I should open this from CO)

(J7)(65) - Open from BTN (open from MP if I change J to K)
KJ(67) - Open from BTN

Next session I will post my guess before and then run in in ProPokerTools

Thank you Rhodriguez!

I have a new batch of starting hands that Im going to test. This time I will start by writing my quess to the left, then the answer to the right.

AhThTc4s CO - was correct
Qh9h8s5s BTN - was correct
Kh8hTs5s CO - was correct
ThQhAs2d CO - wrong, open only from BTN
5hJhAsTd BTN - wrong again, open from CO
Kh6hJd9d MP - was correct
Th6h9d5d MP - totally wrong here, this was from BTN only
Kh5h9d8d CO - wrong, this was BTN
Ah4h4d6s BTN - correct
Ah5h7s9s CO - totally wrong here, this one is open from EP
Kh4h5s6s MP - wrong again, this is CO
6h5h6s4s MP - wrong again, EP
Jh8hTsJc MP - wrong again, EP
8h9hJsQd EP - correct
Ah4h7s8d CO - correct
KhQhQs4d EP - correct
Ah9h8s4s CO - wrong, MP
ThJhAs6d CO - wrong, BTN
Qh7h5s4s CO - wrong, BTN
AhQhKs3d MP - wrong, EP

Ok, so here i was correct 8 times out of 20, so only 40%. I overestimated in 6 cases and underestimated in 6 cases, so no clear trend here.

I will continue to write down starting hands like this after every session and try to improve.

Time for another hand session. Same as before, I will start by writing my quess to the left, then the answer to the right. I will begin with some hands I wrote down last session:

Kh2h3h6s BTN - Nope, this was a fold
Qh5h7h9s BTN - Also fold
Ah4h5s9d BTN - correct
Th8hQs5d BTN - correct
5h8h8d9s BTN - Nope, fold
Qh5hJs6s CO - correct
Ah6h8s4s MP - correct
Kh8hQs9s EP - correct
Ah3h2sKd BTN - nope, CO
8h9hJd7s MP - wrong, EP
QhJh8s3d BTN - wrong, fold
KhQh6s5s CO - wrong, MP
JhTh7s7d MP - wrong, BTN
AhQhJs8d EP - correct
Jh7h8hKd CO - wrong, BTN
AhKhJd8s EP - correct
4h2h5s6d CO - wrong, BTN
Ah8hKs8d CO - wrong, MP
Ah7hJs9d MP - correct
8h7h5h8d CO - wrong, BTN
KhQhTd5s CO - correct
AhJh5s6s MP - wrong, EP
5h6s8d5c CO - wrong, fold
5h6d7s9c CO - wrong, BTN
Jh8h5s6s CO - correct

Ok, with these hands I was correct 10 times out of 25, so also 40%. I overestimated the hand 10 times, which is 40%, which means that I underestimated the hand in 20% of the cases.

Lets do 15 hands from random.org

3sTdQdKh CO - wrong, BTN
3h9sQc5d fold - correct
5dQcAh5s fold - correct
2d3d4s8d fold - correct
AdQdKcTs EP - correct
4s5s9sKh fold - correct
4s3sKc4d fold - correct
As5sJsJd MP - correct
Ts7s4c2d fold - correct
Qh9h4hTs BTN - correct
Jh4h8s3s BTN - wrong, fold
Qs8d4d6c fold - correct
AdTd8s3c BTN - wrong, CO
7h6s4s2d fold - correct
Ts4c4d9h fold - correct

Interesting, with random hands, I was correct 12 times out of 15. I guess the folding decisions are usually harder than placing the hand into the correct strength.

Time for a short session now!

If you watched last Primetime, you might remember how we should be a little tighter at very small stakes. So if you fold a hand that is marginally a call in those RFI's, it might not even be a mistake.

When I do that starting hand stuff, and estimate something incorrectly, I see the ranking in PPT. And also try to figure out the ranking in PJ ranges (a bit more complicated) to get an idea how far it is from my estimation.

I am not so familiar with ProPokerTools. How do you check both of them? I thought the file from PJ made the ranges into PJ ranges. I don't really understand what the difference is, maybe I missed something.

Also, yes I watched the video. I have a few questions that I want to ask regarding tighter ranges. I will post a thread in the Omaha forum about it.

I don't know exactly what he is insinuating. But in ProPokerTools you have a tool Range Explorer with the tab Rankings.
