Hey all. This is my second go at a Get Rich or Die Tryin' Bankroll Challenge. To see how the first attempt went, or to get a feel for the writing style you can expect from this one, check out my old blog: Chrafting Bridges - PokerStars Campaign Mode.

But that's enough with the pleasantries, let's get this thing goin'!

Home Sweet Home:

A Journey Through the (Poker)Stars

STARTING BANKROLL: $8.73
TARGET BANKROLL: $1,000.00
TIME FRAME: 300 Hours of Play

In my poker career, I've raised my bankroll from the dead ($25 or less) close to a dozen times now. Each time it was done on PokerStars, playing predominantly MTSNGs and MTTs. And I believe that I can do it once more, making this my final trip through the mini-micro stakes.

The time frame is an estimate based on my win-rate and multi-tabling ability. I believe it's important to set yourself a time-based goal that matches your financial one. Personally, I prefer to use a metric that I have more control over - such as hours played. Framing the challenge in this way, instead of setting a hard date for its completion, allows me to progress at a pace that better synchronizes with my current abilities and work-ethic. I should never feel "forced" to play in order to get under some arbitrary deadline. That way, when I do sit down to play, it's with a fresh state of mind and a focus on quality over quantity. In theory, this should make for a much more organic, process-oriented mental approach.

As for when you can expect a new post, my intention is to do 1-2 write-ups per week, with a brief weekly update on the Monday, and another article tackling a subject that (hopefully) players can relate to.

GAME SELECTION

Choose one game. Learn how to beat it. And then grind it with regularity. That's the recipe for sustaining consistent growth.

Looking back through my HM2 database and my OPR results, I can clearly see where my strengths lie. And so I know, definitively, which avenue of attack I will pursue:

Poker Variant: Full-Ring NLHE
Primary Game: MTSNGs (90-180 player field size)
Support Game: MTTs (360 player MTSNGs, "The League" MTT and Stars Rewards Freerolls)
Game Structure: Regular Speed Freezeouts with some Turbo's mixed in to Support. And the $1.50 90-man KO's

This table shows my 2018 results for the games that I've chosen to focus on.

I will not be adding any MTT's, outside of the "The League" tournaments, until I get to $1,000. The field sizes through the micros are so large and the variance in MTTs is so high in general that I'd rather use that "screen slot" to plug in another MTSNG and keep chipping away, slowly but surely.

These numbers aren't arbitrary. In essence, this is a contract - it represents the deal that I've made with variance - and as long as I hold up my end of the bargain (sticking to the bankroll requirements), I have faith that variance will honor its end and propel me upwards through the limits.

PHASE ONE - AGGRESSIVE EXPANSION ($0 - $500)
- The idea is to move through the limits as quickly as practically possible
- Focus on developing a foundation of solid tournament fundamentals
- Develop the core of your play-style
- Find a rhythm. Build momentum. Breed consistency.
- Instill good habits

PHASE TWO - SPECIALIZATION ($500 - $1,000)
- Learn one game inside and out
- Choose a game that has the potential for a steady win-rate, while providing sufficient volume flow on a regular basis
- Create and implement a work schedule around your game of choice in order to maximize efficiency
- Evolve your play-style to suit the current meta-game

PHASE THREE - DIVERSIFICATION ($1,000 - ?????)
- Building upon the chosen specialty, begin diversifying play by gradually adding in MTT's of differing variants and formats
- Branch out into alternative fields of study to support optimal performance (psychology, nutrition, etc.)
- Continue to refine the fundamental skills of tournament poker, developing an expertise.

I'm excited to get this train back on the tracks and working towards something tangible again. And I hope that my journey can serve to positively impact your own in some small way. So a big thanks for reading, and best of luck to you all!

I've made some edits to this OP because it felt a little too wordy - too much fluff, not enough substance. One of my goals in writing this blog is to provide something of value to anybody who takes the time to read it. I'm not a professional writer by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll do my best to make the read an enjoyable one. More edits on the way...

Much appreciated bud.

Looks like we're on similar paths trying to build up from scratch. Your challenge is off to a good start!

Keep up the hard work man. This is the toughest part (grinding the miniature stakes).

Cheers!

WEEK ONE UPDATE

We're out of the danger zone!

On my goin' broke-o-meter, starting with less than $9.00 is about a 7.5 out of 10 (where 10 is a very high risk of going broke and 0 is a very low risk of going broke). Getting up over the $20.00 mark takes a lot of the pressure off. I'd say the risk is closer to a 1.5 out of 10 now (because an 80+ buy-in downswing at these stakes would be absolutely mental...).

The week did start off a little rough though. My bankroll dipped to about $6.50 before I decided to make some small adjustments.

First I tightened up my pre-flop opening range. The one I was using was built for a more balanced approach, and at these stakes balancing your range is pretty unnecessary when the majority of players seem unclear as to where the fold button is currently located. So I focused on entering pots with a strong range of hands, in position wherever possible, and made sure to value bet relentlessly when I had the best of it.

Second thing I did was to simplify my approach. I wanted to play a very straightforward TAG style and limit the amount of guesswork I needed to do post-flop (and believe me, post-flop play at the $0.25 games will lead to a lot of head-scratching and WTF?-ing). To do this I just completely turned off my "fancy play" setting and played it pretty much ABC, with a little bit of D and E mixed in around the bubble and on the final table.

Lastly, the one change that I felt made the biggest difference was making sure to get a work-out in before I play. Nothing crazy, just a light 30-40 minutes of some stretching and some weights, but it was very noticeable how much clearer I was able to think and how much calmer I remained through any of the rough patches (of which there were aplenty). This one is definitely something I need to turn into a habit...

After implementing those changes I played about 20 more tournaments to finish the week and racked up six top-4 finishes, but unfortunately no wins (probably could've had three...). Nonetheless, I'd say it's a promising start to the journey...

WEEK TWO UPDATE

It was a muddy week, week two...

Monday (-$1.07) - I was card dead. Not much I can do about that.

Tuesday (-$1.09) - Too short of a session. Did not put in enough volume to even out an early run of negative variance.

Wednesday (-$1.15) - This was Halloweeeen! So I was totally distracted and never should've sat down to play in the first place.

Thursday (---) - Mental break. Should have taken it yesterday though... Know thyself!

Friday (+$4.78) - Feeling refreshed, I put in a full session and was treated to a little run good, picking up my first win of the challenge.

Saturday (F*#%!!!!) - Momentum; it's so elusive sometimes... I woke up ready to grind all day, hoping to carry forward the positive momentum from a solid Friday. But you need internet to play internet poker and my ISP was down and out. All. Damn. Day. All over the city too...

Sunday (-$1.80) - ...still waiting for internet... Finally, around 2:00pm (and 30+ hours of service interruption later), it comes back to life. I was pretty rattled at this point, and so sitting down for a session wasn't a great idea. And I paid for it - going 0-for-12 in tournament cashes.

It was just one of those weeks where I had a hard time trying to sustain any sort of consistency at all. There was no "rhythm" to it. But here's the great thing about last week - it's over! And so this is a perfect time to refresh my mindset, clear the canvas, and move it on forward to week number three!

Let's get after it this week, shall we?

So far, so good...

LEVEL UP!

After a stellar day at the $0.25 90's (two wins!), I've cleared Level 1 on the bankroll management chart.

Here's a visual of the journey so far...

And the numbers...

Starting tomorrow, I'll be swapping out the $0.10 360's for the $0.50 90's. They don't run a whole lot, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - that's usually a sign that they'll be less reg-infested. Volume would be an issue if I wanted to play these exclusively, but I'll only be using them to support my play at the $0.25 games. I'm hoping that the quality will make up for the quantity.

Fire it up!

GAME SELECTION ADJUSTMENT

Turbo Sit'N'Go's are a different kind of animal...

Compared to their regular speed counterparts, the turbo swings can be quite tilt inducing. The bad beats, coolers, mistakes, etc. can pile up one on top of another so quickly (and so cruelly) that it most definitely disrupts my rhythm, my mood and my mindset. Therefore, after a two and a half week trial of mixing and matching the two structures, I've decided to drop the turbo's from my repertoire and hone in on the games that have been my bread and butter for the better part of this decade.

Making this change is an analytical decision, and it wasn't taken lightly. Here are a few of the main reasons for the shift in strategy:

1) Experience. I've never been a big turbo SNG grinder and so I don't have anywhere near as many hours as I do at the reg speed games. I feel like I know what I'm doing at the regs, but at the turbos it just feels like my game hasn't adapted well to that particular dynamic. I feel out of place there.

2) The Data. My turbo sample size is smallish and unimpressive, while my samples at the non-turbo's show a steady win-rate over a quality sized portfolio of action. Without trying to brag (ok, maybe a little bit trying to brag...) I can quantifiably tell you that I've been able to crush the regular speed, micro-stakes MTSNGs with between 90 to 180 players for around a 60% ROI over close to two thousand games. I can not reliably spread the same kind of propaganda about my turbo game.

3) Consistency. My game at the reg speeds is a patient, counter-puncher's approach. I like to build an image, develop reads, and then strike when the openings present themselves in the mid to late stages. But the turbo's require an attacking mentality almost right from the start, and the pace of the game forces you to constantly be applying pressure. Having the two structures running at the same time messes with my rhythm, and I believe that's been dulling my edge in my primary format. Having that mental "flow" throughout the session, where thought processes are easy and natural, is an element that has been missing since I've started mixing game speeds.

4) The Skill-Set. One of my goals in building through the mini-micro's is to develop and polish a play style that will make transitioning into the specialization phase a smooth and organic process. The main game I'm aiming to crush is the $4.50 On-Demands, and the skill-set needed for those games differs in so many areas from the turbos. I believe it would better serve my purpose to stick to the 15-minute blind levels and focus down each and every detail of that structure so that my game is primed and ready when I arrive at Phase Two.

5) The Swings. The nature of tournament poker highlights variance in its many lights. From the dark, dreary depths of that 50 buy-in downswing to the pulse pounding peaks of that major tournament score - it's quite the ride. But to experience the highs, you need to weather the lows - and you do that with proper bankroll management. I don't really know what proper BRM is for turbo MTSNG, but from these past couple of weeks I can tell you that it's way more conservative than what I have charted out in the OP. The swings are too much for the aggressive approach I'm taking to this build, and so an adjustment needed to be made to the bankroll management chart:

That definitely looks more "my speed".

You are absolutely right about which format to play...the one that suits your style best, and for you that is regular speed, nothing wrong about that...
Keep up your great view on things.
