I play on laptop, because I am traveling around a lot. As I have ton of tables opened I usually have at least additional 2 screens next to laptop screen plugged in or now even better - a 4k 50" TV, which gives you a real estate of 4 screens
With keyboard and mouse plugged in so laptop acts more as a desktop, tucked away under the screen mostly.

The awesome thing about it is that it is easy to move workstation and have all data read to go + if you wanna study outside or you are moving between a few places than it makes it really easy + it uses less space etc.
If you get new i7 mobile processor with 6 cores (i7 8750h) it compares to desktops for sure, should be strong enough for most needs, is a beast. Also you get them for a good price.
You also have computer on battery if something goes wrong- but you can get UPS for that.
You also have usually 2 SSD disks inside. Switch out the normal Sata disk with the SSD one and one main m.2 type (PCIe) SSD, so that is fine.
What are the negative points for me:
-Desktops run a lot quieter than laptops. Also thermal throttling is a thing with laptops, so it is good to be aware which model you are buying. But therma problems are just if you do something really taxing for the processor. But if you have a nice cooler and good case, desktop should really be a LOT quieter than laptop. That is the biggest one for me.
-You do get a bit better performance for less money, the difference is not so big though.
-If anything goes wrong it is usually cheaper and easier to fix desktop computer and just replace some component.
- you are limited to 32GB of RAM, which should be enough even for more heavy use, but if you need more then desktop is a way to go
I always was using desktop before, but will probably not go back, specially with new laptops becoming so strong and I love not having cables everywhere and nothing on the floor or on the table taking space. Although the new AMD 2700x is kinda awesome and good price, so who knows
