Actually, it's mathematically proved knowledge that a low pair is more +EV to hold than 2 to a royal and or especially 3 high offsuit cards, though it's worse than 3 to a royal (i.e. 3 cards of the same suit above the 9).

So it's most profitable in the long run to hold as follows:

A♠:K♠:Q♦:9♣:8♣: -> A♠:K♠:
A♠:K♠:Q♦:9♦:9♣: -> 9♦:9♣:
A♠:K♠:Q♠:9♦:9♣: -> A♠:K♠:Q♠:

A low pair is a draw to 3 of a kind, a hand that pays thrice more than a high pair. The EV from hitting specifically trips with 99 (drawing to 2 outs thrice for a thrice bigger payout) is about the same as the one from hitting specifically a high pair with AK (drawing to 6 outs thrice) or AKQ (to 9 outs twice), but what makes 99 more +EV to hold than AKQ unsuited is that the former is a draw to a full house or quads and has a better chance of hitting two pair as well, whereas what makes AKQ suited more +EV than 99 is the huge payout for the royal as well as the decent payout for a flush.

Yes, going for the royal increases the variance, but without doing so, playing video poker becomes -EV even if you're playing with a bonus.

So find and study the jacks or better strategy charts, they're counterintuitive at times but backed by objective combinatorics.

With your method, 70-80% of your sessions are going to be slightly winning, but the remaining 20-30% will be when you'll be losing all those winnings back and then some, because you take more risks when you're in loss, which will further exacerbate the loss if you're unlucky at the doubling. Tommy Angelo called this approach (chasing losses) 'eating like a bird, s:censored:ing like an elephant'.

The bit about picking the same card all the time in the double round is pure magical thinking. In reality, it doesn't matter at all which card you pick then.

I guess here's the math you're using:

Have decided to cash out what I made and play proper poker. It has been a good ride guys, but I miss playing real poker :)
