That's the standard in Japan, I believe. I sometimes use it. The good thing about it is that it's unambiguous (I haven't heard of any yyyy-dd-mm formats yet), whereas the American and Canadian formats may sometimes leave you guessing, if it's not clear which one is used.
It also comes in handy for file names, if you're using a date instead of a number in the beginning to organize them. That way, you can sort them alphabetically and have them automatically sorted by date as well.
The German format is the same as the Canadian one, except that dots are commonly used instead of slashes. I mostly use the American format (the full mm/dd/yyyy one, none of that shortened stuff) for personal notes and spreadsheets, unless I'm dealing with stuff from many different years, in which case I may switch to the Japanese/ISO 8601 one.
