Hi, villain is pretty much unknown. He had 25/8 over 12 hands so seemed more on the passive side so far but that is no sample. I am mainly interested in what would you do preflop? Firstly I should have opened 6bb. But his 3bet is way too big and I would expect it to be for value most of the time. So I called in order to keep a little wider range in play. It is enough if he has AQ and it should be ok. Even though I am not happy at all with it. But folding seems very weak and shoving too strong.

I think postflop is fine. He gave me great pot odds OTF and OTT he increased sizing so its a fold unimproved.

PokerStars - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by Holdem Manager 3

UTG: $15.23 (152.3 bb)
MP: $4.00 (40 bb)
Hero (CO): $19.14 (191.4 bb)
BTN: $14.10 (141 bb)
SB: $3.59 (35.9 bb)
BB: $10.15 (101.5 bb)

SB posts $0.05, BB posts $0.10, MP posts $0.10

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.25) Hero has K♥: A♠:
UTG calls $0.10, MP checks, Hero raises to $0.50, BTN raises to $1.80, 4 folds, Hero calls $1.30

Flop: ($3.95, 2 players) J♥: 2♣: 3♠:
Hero checks, BTN bets $1.24, Hero calls $1.24

Turn: ($6.43, 2 players) 6♦:
Hero checks, BTN bets $3.80, Hero folds

Results: $6.43 pot ($0.29 rake)
Final Board: J♥: 2♣: 3♠: 6♦:

BTN wins $6.14

Usually I iso raise to 4bb, 5bb is fine. 6 is not needed.

Why not 4-bet call shove?
Flat call oop not the best to play post flop.

As played post flop seems fine.

I would 4bet shove preflop against unknown. 4 betting his 3bet size will make you pot committed anyway. You will have max fold equity and take the pot quite some time. You will be all in a flip sometimes and you will be up against aa kk some times. If your lucky he shows AQ or AJ some of the time.
The power of AK is for a big part the fold equity you can generate preflop. Calling oop makes it hard postflop to get paid I think if you hit.

Well I did not 4bet shove because I was afraid of facing QQ+ at best. Even against AK, QQ+ I am an underdog.

I havent really considered that. I guess yeah, preflop shove would have been the best option.

I know the feeling of not wanting to shove AK preflop. I like to play low variance where possible, and shoving here is not low variance. Also considering the rake I dont expect it to be a hugely profitable spot.
But folding AK vs a 3bet is really to weak vs unknown. If you open 4bb and he reraises to 11 or 12 bb you could just call and take it from there allthough its not a nice spot to be in. But with these sizings you cant really call a flop bet without hitting. And then I would prefer 4bet shoving. Would be good to get other peoples thoughts.

I would 4bet shove PF to unknown.

It's on Stars, so I will utilize cash out. AKx against a QQ is about 43:57, a little below 50:50. And when I cash out, I am actually getting back almost all the extra chips I risked.
So zero risk against JJ-QQ. And considering the fold equity and a few times when I'm up against AA, KK, and another AK, it's a low variance play.

I would 4bet him calling 3bet with AK is weak unless u are doing it for an specific reason. If he doesnt shove inmediatly u can put him on AQ AJ TT JJ from those stats u gave. If he shoves it is an easy fold in my opinion against a tight passive player with those stats

Well this is a tricky preflop spot. You are 140bb deep and the 3bet is quite large, so calling OOP becomes worse. 4betting and facing a shove is bad. I'd say you can 4bet this for sure, but never a 4bet-shove as some people mentioned, that's wrong.
His flop size is unexploitable. So if he's betting a wide range, calling with two overs and backdoor draw is +EV. You block a decent portion of his value range (AA, KK, AJ, KJ), so even better.
Turn I think the only option is check/fold. He has a range advantage here and you can't do anything.

The Baleful Big Slick my goodness, so hard to play in this spot.

I have a rule of thumb. I always get it in with AK AA KK QQ 100% of the time. Over time we will win some folds, win some flips, squander to some. This is the thrill of poker. Getting it ALL-IN.

I love @CharlotteD analysis. "Originally posted by CharlotteD

Then I have different opinion with @londonsystem "It's on Stars, so I will utilize cash out. AKx against a QQ is about 43:57, a little below 50:50. And when I cash out, I am actually getting back almost all the extra chips I risked." This is poker. I don't want to bribe me to run away after going all in. I think this is wasting the value of AK. If we have AK all-in pre-flop. I want to see all 5 cards. I don't want pokerstars money cashing me out. It's gamble time. I think cashing out is -EV play in the long run.

As played on the flop, I can see a down c-bet of 12bb from initial 3-bet raise of 18bb. The pot is 40bb. That is only 30% of the pot. Most of the time, if a player down c-bets, it is weak. So you can try to re-raise 40bb and of course call off if got re-jammed. if he only calls, that's a good news maybe we can see the turn and river for free. if he bet's the turn we can fold already if we did not hit anything.

It's not always weak c-bet means weakness, sometimes they are trapping. That's the beauty of poker. It is full of incomplete information.

I didnt notice the 140 bb stack πŸ™„
This makes 4bet fold a good line indeed. You will not be pot commited by 4betting to like 40bb.
Pot odds if he 5bet shoves is 42% then. Your equity against QQ+, AK is 38%. Even including JJ in his 5bet range doesnt make a call vs a shove from him +EV.
If stacks were 100bb deep your pot odds would be 30% facing a 5bet shove. Even if you put his range on KK+, AK, you have 37% equity. So then 4betting would mean having to call a shove anyway. In that case I would like to have max fold equity to avoid him pushing with things like qq and jj and paying rake.

Hi OP,

I think you're right and his 4 bet will mostly be for value given the information we have.

Considering we're oop, I'd fold preflop.

Thank you for all opinions. I have taken a few things from them. And I am not sure if I noticed the 140bb depth myself :f_ugly: lol

Its a fold for me and wait for a better spot, if you do hit your hand it will be difficult too extract value even against a fish

That's true but you gain a lot of value from fold equity pre picking up uncontested pots pre. It's quite awkward though with 141 bb eff stacks i'm not sure i'm in love with shoving as a 4bet that deep. But the 3bet size makes 4betting smaller tricky so i actually think here you played it well by calling pre and the flop and turn are wp as well imo.
