Totally true, you shouldn't get into the hype of supplementation unless you actually have an issue, but anyway most importantly it's all about what you DO instead of what you TAKE.

I prefer healthy food, enough sleep and exercise over supplements.
When you exercise a lot (4-5x per week) maybe you can start taking supplements. I think you can get the most out of good food.
Since I'm diabetic, I have to avoid foods with high glycemic index.
They tend to raise my blood glucose very quickly, which leads to foggy thinking.
Protein is also essential.
