Thin Value Bet Or Check Behind?

Villain is a regular.

In this flop and with position I decided not to cbet because all pocket pairs would still call me and AT, AJ, AQ, AK. Maybe I could get value from hands like suited connectors with flush draws and straight draws. So I thought it was best to check here.

That donk on the turn made me realize he could've hit the J or had another pair like 66, 77, 88, 99, TT.

On the river he checked and I forgot this player do this with the nuts sometimes.

I posted a hand on the forum some days ago where this same player checked/raised me on the river with the nuts.

So if I recall this on time I would have preferred the check/behind, but this time I went for the 1/3 pot thin value bet.

Maybe this was too thin with that Q and the possible flush draw on board so I don't know if this is a good play here.

And when he check/raised me on the river I knew he did it again with a monster hand.

I didn't thought he was bluffing here at all, because if he wanted to bluff me he could've raised to 3x and it was going to be enough, no need to overbet check/raise here to make me fold.

So what do you think about the hand?

Preflop- maybe a little wide with the 3bet from MPvs EP, his opening range can be anywhere from 13%-16% (if he is a reg it is closer to the 13%) and he can hold all AA AK KK etc, even if you have blockers, I would prefer to 3 bet if the kj were suited or even middle pairs 7’s -10’s being on the low end.

As for river yes just take your equity, no reason to bet. Because if he doesn’t c/r you are in a very tricky spot, really the only thing that misses is a low end str8 draw.. villain holds a bunch of Q’s in their range as well.

My guess would be that he had another diamond, as the other card… and at 5nl c/r is a super strong play on any street.

Cheers
Keep grinding !

Agreed.
The questions to ask are:
:diamond:  What worse will call?
:diamond:  What better will fold?
If you don't have good solid answers to either one of those questions, checking behind is the safe choice.
If you do have solid answers, then you need to see if those are likely -- for example you might think a lower pair might call -- but is a small PP in his EP opening range? And that comes under the heading of "know your opponent"

Pre-flop seems like a fold most of the time against most villains. If it was suited I would just call in position.

The rest seems fine until the river. I don't see any point in betting the river. It will be tough to get value and not sure you get to many better hands to fold.

Thank you for all your comments. Based on what you commented, I'm going to remove this hand from my 3betting range because is giving me a lot of trouble lately.

I wouldn’t remove it, it does have use, just remove it from your 3bet on MP…

3betting this hand at BTN vs CO different sorry, or even 3 betting BB vs btn….

in my opinion "there is something wrong" in your thinking process about why u didnt cbet.
It should be : what part of my range am i cbetting (value, protection and bluff) and what part is my x range ?
=>what is your bluffing range in this spot ?

Interesting question.

Maybe I would have cbet any broadway flush draw and 88+ pairs of course.

Maybe in this spot I wasn't bluffing at all because I think I would have check/behind with hands such as KQ, AT, AJ, AQ, AK and of course KJ.

So do you think it was good to have a bluffing range in this spot?

up to NL10 u can play "the board" :truestory:

but this is a spot where Vilain can pretty much bet turn and river with ATC and print money because your range is capped when u x otf. :profit:

I'm not sure I've ever seen a river check/raise bluff at the micros. I'm sure it happens but it's almost always a strong made hand. I can see an opponent at these stakes overplaying a made hand, but a pure bluff is pretty rare. Especially here, where the only draw that missed was 67 (which he shouldn't be opening from this position).

The only bluffs that I could see playing this way would be Ax of spades. And if he was planning on bluffing with that hand he most likely would have lead the river. Like I said, check/raises in this spot are pretty much always value at these stakes.

As others have said, the 3b is a little light in MP. As played, I think we can c-bet our range on this flop as we can have all of the overpairs. On the river, we just check back and realize our equity. The only hands that we get value from are some worse Jx that called our 3b, which isn't many (especially since we now lose to QJ).
