my thoughts in here was that he might have had something like AA AK AQ or maybe KQ when the turn came i put him on 2 pair or AQ/AK
but as you see i was wrong :f_biggrin:

what do you think could and should i have played this different ? :f_grin:

preflop is already a lot to talk about:

the SB is the worst position at the table, as you will be OOP the entire hand. therefore you want to 3bet or fold not letting the BB in for cheap or not give him the opportunity to squeeze.

vs a 2,xx or 3x open 55 is a clear 3bet. vs a 4x open 55 is a fold. villain should open w a smaller range, so your borderline hands become folds.

postflop you can choose whatever line you wish, as long as you lose your stack. both of you have a good hand, so the money has to go in.

your thinking process though is flawed:
do not put villain on a hand. you are probably not jesus. give him a range of hands and learn to play accordingly.
he opens the BU. so there is no reason, that he can not have 77, QQ, KK or 86s. is AK more likely? yes, but only as there are more combinations of it possible.

There will be hands (and days) like this.
You can tweak your play this way and that, and second-guess yourself into the dirt.

:diamond:  No matter what you do, opponent is never folding
:diamond:  No matter what opponent does, you're never folding <<< I might be wrong here. If some of the real experts can find a fold, I would love to know where, and why

The trick then is to lose the least.
That would be flat call the turn, and check/call the river. Again, I'm not sure that that is the best line,

Cheers,
VS

ahh ok i see . my thoughts on this hand was actually to call specific too see if i hit a set
and if not then to fold after if he bet the turn
he was bigger stack then me and i was thinking he might have a good hand
so if i hit the set and he hit the top pair top kicker or something like that
there was a good chance for me to get it all in and win with the set .
but he had a better set so what can you do haha :f_biggrin:

im still in the poker kindergarden and whitout a doubt makes loads of mistakes so i figured this was a hand i wanted to ask about because i was really unsure if it was a bad play or if i played it okay . alot of my other hands i can see my mistakes when looking at them after im done with a session but this specific hand i just had no clue if played right or wrong from my side . but i can see now that i played it wrong from preflop and the check raise on turn was a mistake too it makes sense to me now

i was just really sure i had the best hand there :f_thumbsup:

you know, you will have the best hand most of the time. you got unlucky to run into a better hand. thats poker. you need a good bankroll management, cause you can not avoid those losses.

so do not get me wrong:
once you made that call preflop, you have to get all in sooner or later.

It is perfectly fine to call with pocket fives in that situation

I would raise larger on the turn, to get value from spade draws, JTs, and other stuff that's about the only thing I would change. set over set the monies going in.

Pre-flop seems fine to call for set value. Post-flop is pretty standard. Offcourse if I would raise the turn it would be a shove. Min raising looks really strong, but now you walked into a cooler.

3bet preflop would be more optimal in my opinion, as by calling you're opening the door for a bb squeeze and buttons range is very wide. Shove turn.

I don't mean openshove, I mean if you're raising turn it should be a shove

yea ok i can see that . how about just in general when set mining . can you do it profitable with any pocket pair or should i only be set mining with like 55+/77+ or what are your thoughts on that ? . does position matter if the strat for the hand is set mining and then check fold if not hit and so on :) ?

im asking beacause i feel like if i only where to play premium hands im really easy to read when i have sit at a table for some time . so i try to play other hands too

and im kinda playing every hand the same preflop be it pocket aces or lets say 89s or AK/KQ etc just to not be too predictable

but i dont know if that even matter in nl2

get a chart. snowie preflop advisor is for free.

the paid version considers stakes and rake, but you should be fine w/o it.

here is the solution for the situation we have discussed:

green = 3-bet. as we have established above, we do not call in the SB. 55 is the bottom of our range, so vs a 4x open this should still be fold.

If you base your decision on this chart you can't say this should be a fold as a 3bet is also fine.

Factoring in BB will fold all his weaker holdings to a 3bet and Hero + BTN are 107BB effective.

this chart does apply to a 2,x - 3x open. a 4x is a very different story.

Some software and some coaches advocate 3Bet or fold from SB -- others leave room for a calling range even from SB
It seems that once players get that you're 3Betting your entire range, you just open yourself to a host of 4Bets, which turn the bottom part of your range into your 3Bet/Fold range.

Especially in this case, since BU opened 4BB -- now your 3Bet size is 12BB -- a wee bit much for pocket 5s

There is a lot of different styles remember.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying you're wrong telling him that there's only one play here. Since almost every choice you make here is suboptimal.
