If I'm playing poker or studying, having music with meaningful lyrics actually makes it harder to do those tasks, because I keep focusing on the music.

When I read something, sometimes I have the same issue, but I have something like ADHD or ADD (getting a proper diagnosis is quite complicated here as I can't afford private healthcare), and oddly enough songs with lyrics I know often regulate the overflow of my thoughts and helps me stay focused. Other times I look on the playlist I listened to and can't recall any songs and actually surprised the I one I wanted to queue because "I haven't listened to it for a long time" was actually played 10 minutes earlier :f_rolleyes:

Sometimes, though when I want to just listen to music, I listen to songs from when I was a teenager — so the 60's and '70s

I have plenty of favorites from the '60s and '70s, even though my mother wasn't even born until '74. One of my favorites is this one:

I love the song, but I always wondered why — after all that time — he hadn't named the horse :)

When I was a kid, ADHD wasn't even thought of. I was described by my teachers as "fidgety" or "has difficulty staying on task" and similar.
I had another aspect of ADHD that worked in my favour though — hyper focus. If I began to concentrate on something, I could tune out everything around me. In that state you could walk up to me and say my name, and I wouldn't hear you.

Once when I was about 12, I got intrigued by the puzzle of how a ball-point pen worked — if you push the button, the point comes out, but if you push it again, it goes back in. I took apart several pens and had them all laid out on my desk. The teacher came up and stood beside me, and the whole class watched. Finally he said, "Vorpal, if you had a brain you'd take it out and play with it"
I took that as high praise.

Yeah, hyperfocus is great, but it always remind me of this meme:

I would've also took it as that. I guess the whole class laughed out loud. I did when I read it.

And with the name of the horse, there were over 1 million copies of that single sold in the US alone, can you imagine how much effort would it be to replace them all the album covers so it says "A horse named Carl"? and who would buy a single with a name like that?

By the way my theory is he wrote the song out in the desert, and the horse had a name that he didn't remember (as no one does in the desert), but "A horse who's name I can't remember" would be impossible to fit in the lyrics.

Well I don't know about "nostalgic", since I only recognize a few of them
