Baking Day

My daughters will arrive this afternoon and do a bunch of baking.

Hopefully, they'll clean up afterwards
Hey! Wait a minute! Who is running this show, anyway!? [1]
I'll just tell them that they must leave the kitchen exactly as they found it.
Yeah, right

[1] they are

I'll try — but I generally try to stay well in the background.

Classic Satellite Fold

It's cool, we only need to see the finished product. :f_grin:

Well, two of the three daughters (one is actually an add-in and isn't here) are here, and have been for about an hour, but are talking. This indicates that the baking won't start for some time.

I'll be doing some early Christmas shopping in a few minutes and will try to be away for several hours.

I'll pull out the camera when I get back

Oh my no!
I would not be allowed anywhere near the kitchen with all the ladies bustling about. I'm allowed in toward the end when the cleaning up needs doing.

Here's a couple of results:
Traditional shortbread cookies

Slightly overcooked shortbread cookies (I call them Sith cookies, 'cuz they're on the dark side)

Cutting the toffee into squares — OK, OK, rectangles

Haha, 'Sith cookies' is brilliant! Honestly, sometimes the ones on the dark side have a better crunch anyway. It sounds like you’ve mastered the art of being the 'cleaning crew' just to get a taste of the final results. Those shortbread cookies look delicious regardless of the shape!

My youngest daughter is of the same opinion, which is why she always makes at least one tray on the dark side.

Butter Tarts

sounds weird, but they taste *really* good, and have been a favourite in our family for generations.

The history:
Take these with a grain of salt — but don't add any to the recipe
https://www.cbc.ca/radio/history-of-butter-tarts-1.5316827
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butter_tart
https://www.readersdigest.ca/culture/surprising-history-butter-tarts/

The Recipe:
PRIZE BUTTER TARTS
1 Double Crust Pie recipe (page 211)
250 mL packed brown sugar 1 cup
125 mL seedless raisins or chopped pecans 1/2 cup
75 mL melted butter or margarine 1/3 cup
1 egg, beaten
25 mL milk 2 tbsp
5 mL vanilla 1 tsp

Preheat oven to 190°C (3750F). Prepare pastry dough; cut in circles and line 8 cm (3") tart pans with pastry circles. Combine balance of ingredients. Spoon mixture into unbaked pastry lined pans, filling each about 2/3 full.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until filling is cooked. Yield: 12 tarts

Notes: We use ready-made tart shells to save time, but any pie crust recipe should be fine. The thinner the pastry, the better. If the pastry is too thick, you'll have lots of filling left over after filling 12 tarts

Edit: I have been informed that if the pasty is *too* thin, then the tarts crumble when you try to eat them

Variance, Swings and Results

and a new record Elo[1] rating on GGPoker[2]
Four times each week, GGPoker has a free spingo. Usually a $0.25 entry on Mon, Wed and Fri, with a $1.00 ticket on Saturday.
Lately, though there has been a $0.25 each day.
I thought that I would progress slowly and steadily up the ratings. Boy was I wrong!

My Elo rating giraffe:

What do we learn:
:diamond:  I set a new record today (2451)👏🎉
:diamond:  Going out in 3rd place means you lose too much. Never go out first — although that can't be helped some times, and you'd never fold a premium hand just to game the rating system.
:diamond:  No matter what you do sometimes you lose. Sometimes you lost a lot. Sometimes you lose a lot several times in a row.
:diamond:  Sometimes you win … a lot … several times in a row

What I expected:
Something like games 640 to 750 or 1100 to 1240

The big surprise:
Games 950 to 1100 — although which side of that down/upswing was more surprising is hard to say.

An interesting consequence:
A player's rating gives a sometimes false impression of their skill. Once a player hits 2000 rating for the first time, they are rated as "C" — but if they drop below that they don't lose their C rating. However, by looking at the player's stats, you can see that the higher rated player (usually) have the higher win rates.

[1] An Elo rating system is a method of ranking players in a game or sport. Learn more …
[2] GGPoker's Spin and Gold rating system: https://help.ggpoker.com/article/Spin-Gold-ELO-Summary

Results:
According to PokerTracker4, I've won 20 of 51 (39.2%) $1 tournaments for a total of $7.32, and won 46 of 130 (35.4%) $0.25 tournaments for a total of $ -1.25
GGPoker only allows you do download hand histories for the past 3 months, so some tournaments in september - october are missing. Not really a loss of course, because these are freebies.
I've

Yeah, I have a "B"-rating from when I was trying spin and go's I think some years ago. But now if my BR is larger and unless the is prize higher I just donk away the chips and hope to get lucky, but not waste too much time. I don't like the game really. The battle royales I don't even play.

Hey have some nice holidays Vorpal!

I do OK on the battle royals — but I would never pay to play them.

I Love a Sense of Humour

this one though…
Last year, I received a mug with stars on it. When filled with hot liquid, constellation lines appear

I was starting to load the wash-disher, and wondered if the mug was machine washable — so I checked the bottom

I tip my hat to the person that thought of it, and the manager that approved it

The Last Post

at least for 2025

I was once asked to play this at a remembrance day service. I was about 15 years old or so. I totally botched it.
