It's that villain blocks the straight. So makes it most likely easier to represent the hand you have.
I expect that was the plan, but didn't worked well for villain. Otherwise the 3 barrel bluff makes no sense if it was to represent the straight you have.

Well, if opponent wants to play blockers in the same way as the straight, that's the way to go.

Well few points that came to my mind from opponent side:

1: Preflop would prefer to fold to 3bet without A high suit. Hand plays pretty rough especially without nut suit.

2: Flop is worse for my range so surely villain wants to have good amount of leads. Perhaps all 77/88 combos can be played with non x-f line but I think this would be fine candidate to just x-f.

He doesn't have straight draw, bdfd is not to nuts and he has two high cards with AQ. All these points are not good either for lack of equity or for unblocking reasons. He wants me to have stuff like AA, AQQ and high cards in general.

3: I am not sure how high should we rank blocker value from 88 alone. Flop is bad for my range meaning I fairly rarely have two pair or better overall. So especially on blank sort of runout how many two pair or better can we fold even versus triple barrel as default line? If flop was more favourable for me I could obviously give up stronger type hands by the river shove.

That said 88 will also have nearby blocker effect on rundowns hitting two pairs. But yeah again having like A988 or AT88 in villain shoes would feel quite a bit better combo.

4: Villain can still choose to start bluffing turn if flop goes checked. Which actually does bring question if we should cbet in position with nuts or recognise how bad flop is and keep hand in check range? I would have probably bet still in position with just one pair blocker.

BvsB, most people never fold to a 3bet (although they should). I was just thinking postflop line, preflop is quite debateable as I would imagine you are not over folding, I think AQ88 non-suited Ace is borderline at the best.

But if he calls the 3bet, he can't just play for value. And 88 blocker is along with Ace blocker the only good bluff component in the hand. In that way using that 88 as a bluff makes sense, although the rest of the hand is not perfect for it.
