Ahh thanks guys!

Anyway, a new twist in the tale... TITAN the glorious has now implemented their updates... super, for those of you who don't know, it know means you CANNOT play more than 6 tables without a super lag and there is no beep indicating it is your turn....

So, I have a plan, cos I still wanna keep playing here as I am clearing a bonus and also have a nice rakeback bonus in line before I leave for SA... so my plan... I actually thought about it yesterday and was planning on doing it anyway in a smaller dose, but I am going to be adding a new game to my repertoire...

6-max turbo SNGs... I have just played a few, and I think they are going to be a lot of fun and pain at the same time. You are just dealt so so so many marginal situations, it is a great workout for a thinking player. It's obv profitable cos it's poker, but I am expecting it to be very very swingy as SH games tend to be... but, while iPoker cannot support the FR volume I like, I think I'll be able to work on some additional skills with the 6-max game.... also, I'll give the regs on the FR tables a break, and hopefully they'll forget about how loose I can push from all positions at times :f_biggrin:

So that's the plan, 6x6max turbo tables, I'm gonna be starting on the $11 for a few, but when I feel comfortable I'll be adding the $22s and $33s... Prepare for the pain :f_biggrin: :f_biggrin: :f_biggrin:

Okie... wrapped up a day of 6-max games, it went nicely as apparently I ran ok... What I really like about these is the quick turnover, volume is definitely achievable and I think I could 9-table these quite comfortably, but Titan sucks atm, but I am happy to play these until they resolve their issues... to see my complaints in more detail visit the titan forum... But overall happy with the experiement, after all they are still SNGs and the same features are apparent, so guess I'll be grinding them again tomorrow... Oh was playing the $22s a bit today, see no reason not to play the $33s soon as well... later...

Played the $22s and $33s today... has been interesting, as I think one of the things I am still a little unsure of is the looseness of the calls I am getting... There are many loose players on these and especially on the bubble I seem to not have as much FE as I think in certain spots... So I am going to be doing some analysis of these as to how to best adjust to the loose players... There are so many great spots in these that regardless of the results these are deifinitely good for strengthening certain aspects of my game... I look forward to seeing what a larger sample looks like... But I have to say, playing high volume of these takes some resolve as they are so super swingy that tilting can happen quickly, so I think a strong psychological resolve is definitely an edge here as so many people playing these can get super pissed off at times... This I feel will be an interesting adventure...

OK, so I am not certain how I am feeling atm... I am running very badly right now and I can't seem to win hands, same old story... but because I am playing a new format my confidence has taken a bit of a knock. I know I am experiencing the negative end of variance, but with the looseness of the calls I am seeing it has unsettled me a bit. I have done some looking into the theory behind the adjustments to the SH sngs and what I read was along the lines of what I have been thinking, but what I am seeing is just waaaaay looser... I think I just need to get a decent sample going... and what frustrated me a little extra was cos titan's update is crap I accidentally registered for a $55 DON tourney and obviously bubbled cos I ran into QQ...

It's interesting cos I am feeling the frustration of the bad run again, and I think it is inextricably linked to my confidence... so I shall take steps to improve my confidence in this format, cos I do enjoy it, and reinstate that mental resolve needed...

C'mon Nick! It's only a 400 game B/E stretch.. child's play mate! And you're up over a grand for the month!

And this is a group of exclamation marks!!!!!

Are you playing alright? If so and it's just variance, take the control back fella.. you're better than them and you know it. _thumbsup:

That's what I need to check for myself... am I playing alright... for the most part I believe Yes I am as I am confident in a lot of my decisions... although I am having doubts as to whether or not some of my pushes in certain spots are too loose... the 6-handed game is fast and loose and I need to know I am adapting properly... so I am doing a big SNG wiz review of my 6-max games... interestingly I found after that somewhat whiny post that I was both hungry and a bit exhausted... just good to see how it all contributes to the mindset... Confidence is key though, so I need to take a good solid look at my marginal decisions and see what can be tweaked... overall I do believe it is just the variance, but I am not about to say my game is perfect, so homework time for me :f_biggrin:

And it never will be - although it will get closer to it. Sounds to me you have slipped a little into the results oriented mindset.. you know that ongoing review and adjustment is required no matter how you are running. Man, we've got faith in you. :f_love:

Tx Waiboy... Interesting in that I think there may be elements of that results orientedness to a degree... I think that ties into the confidence issue... Overall I constantly work on my game in many different ways to strengthen it... Although with me grinding a new format that I have never grinded before I feel that it is healthy to question my results and analyse my decisions... I have to answer the question: am I doing everything I can correctly? I think what I really feel the need to answer is what is the best way to adapt to the different ranges given a different (70/30) prize structure... There is a different dynamic in these games, and it is causing me to question myself, especially as I have gone through a run of bubble busts, to the point where I am getting more 3rds than 2nds, and almost as many as 1sts... I need to find if I have any leaks here...

EDIT:

Having reviewed many of my recent games and working with much looser ranges I am still overall pretty happy with how I have been playing... which means I can attack tomorrow with confidence... I have noticed that the bubble is held in a very very fine balance and the slightest shift in villain's range can change the overall differential quite significantly. I think one of the things that was confusing me was with the regs who began calling me super light... like Q2o light while still 8BB deep on the bubble... I think I need to learn to pick some spots to fold in the SB to preserve some FE tho... It's something which intrigues me, cos normally I am happy to shove every orbit, but cos they happen so quickly in these games I am getting called lighter and lighter by the multitablers and especially in games that go on a bit longer... I think that is one of the areas I wanna work on... picking spots to fold more, huh... who woulda thought... need to preserve that FE...

I recognise alot of what you post, the game dynamic in 6max makes them a lot harder to play then (normal) 9-10max imo.

The payout is more top heavy, so I think the basic adjustments are to usualy call a bit looser and push a little bit tighter.
Due to the game dynamic you have to open a lot looser from BU when the blinds get higher (steal more often), so there is more room for postflop trouble. Luckily you do have a huge edge postflop vs the donkeys

GL with it man :]

Today has been brutal... I have been pushing through keeping my composure and just getting punished... no I can accept this, but what I do not know yet is whether it is just variance or if it is a leak in my game. A large part of this is variance I know, but I am concerned about my HU results on the $33s... This is truly testing... The biggest strain on my mindset is that I do not have the proven track record at this game and I have to run largely on faith... And when you drop 30+BI in a short period, this is what gets tested. But one thing is for certain, I am not going to give up. I may drop the $33s for a bit and play he $11s and $22s for a while, but I know that this is all a new charachter building journey for me.

Time to break more of those mental shackles off...

OK... so I am still running horribly... I am confident in that a lot of it is due to variance, as it seems like the only time I win chips is when everyone else folds preflop... If I get called, I'm out/crippled, regardless of what I hold, and while this happens, the pokergods are once again testing my resolve...

So updated October graph:

I am gonna be doing some reviews with the Dissection Crew soon, but I am pretty confident in how I am playing. I have been doing my own analysis and I am happy with how I am playing... I think yesterday I may have overcompensated by tightening up a little too much, but today I was happy with my decisions and when I was called the cards were always in the range I anticipated and when I called a shove I was always ahead or it was very close or flipping... But I simply couldn't win critical hands... I wasn't hitting the flop :f_biggrin: But one thing I have resolved to do, I want to beat these games, it will make me a much better player overall and I know I can beat them... I expected them to be swingy, I just need to stick to my guns... and it is tough... cos when I played 17 games today and only monied 2 on the back of everything else, it is tough... But I am still confident that it is variance. I will look for any leaks that may be there, but I am confident that I can overcome this... even tho my roll is still super comfortable for the $33s, I am gonna stick with the $22s and $11s until I can build it up a bit again... If I have to I will also drop the $22s... Again it's a confidence thing, and I have to work on building up a decent sample so that I can review it without the effect on short term variance...

Just curious, you were doing really well playing the normal SNG making a very nice profit from them. Why on earth would you want to switch to a game that is more swingy. Are you bored with regular SNG.

I know it's nice to challenge oneself, but your a very strong winning player on the regulars. Personally if I were you I would continue to destroy the regular SNG.

I think if a poll were done on pokerstrategy you would find that a lot of people have lost a fair bit of money playing games that are not their strong suit.

I'm a good example of this as I'm a FL player, trying to master SNG, MTT. I realize your still playing SNG's but they are really different in play.

Just don't take to long to figure out that you should do what you do best.

Hey Frozenrope...

The main reason I am not playing FR games are because I can't play more than 6 tables at a time, and with the FR games if I only 6 table them I go insane cos I get really bored... If Titan was to sort itself out then I would probably switch back... But, I feel there is much value in getting really good at the 6 max games... as you progress to higher limits and traffic becomes tighter being confident at 6 max games allows you to experience more traffic and volume while still being able to concentrate on fewer tables... also being confident at playing shorthanded with rising blinds also has so many advantages in larger tournaments when sitting on the last 2/3 tables in pre-final table scenarios... I am beginning to appreciate the swinginess of these... high-variance games can produce variance in both directions, as long as you can maintain a positive mindset... I believe defeating this game is a challenge that is going to teach me a lot about the game and myself. It'll serve to strengthen my mindset and my game further... I also like the idea of having more options for traffic, particularly when Ipoker can be a bit of a dog with that at times... so while I am taking a bit of a beating so far, I am confident in my play, and I will continue to take steps to develop my game... As tough as this game is, I like the challenge it must be said...

Couldn't agree more, Titan new updates have made multitabling a nightmare. Its the same with FL the higher you go the less traffic so your forced to learn SH tables, to get in the volume needed. Well keep up the great work.

Right... these games are interesting... still not running great and still would like to do a review with Flows when he has time, but until then I will continue to grind. I feel I am playing well... IMO the ICM in these is so critical as you literally have to adjust ranges every orbit against each individual player... the FR games are much more forgiving than these... but these games are excellent for so many reasons...

Been working on my mindset towards these as well, and thinking that I am improving... Despite the large swing downwards I am confident in my ability and coming to terms with the fact that these games are fast and loose the short term variance will be brutal, but it also has the potential to be glorious... as much as I have been running badly over the last 2 weeks I know that recoveries can be quick and beautiful, just don't lose it in between... I think I began to get too excited about the potential cash I could bring in the way I was running, and that was a mistake... it switches the mind to the results oriented-mode... so I have been moving back towards the understanding that I may never win again, but if I play the best game that I can I have an increased chance of making a profit in the long run... So, that be it for now... I will continue to grind and see where the line will go next...

...and just like that it seemed like the doomswitch was flicked off... I strated winning some hands, not all, but some, the sick suckouts were less frequent and I even experienced a little bit of my own luck... felt good... good for my confidence too... I do believe I am playing these well... still need more of a sample... will also wait a bit longer before I tackle the $33s again, but looking forward to that!

love your blog~!
I don't play at Titan but I hope they do fix that multi-table dillemma...

good luck on your games~!

Keep going NickParkes - you're an SnG inspiration to me. Cannot imagine why Titan would make it harder for people to MT. But then there are a bunch of things that drive me crazy about that site.

Is it the rakeback that keeps you there?

Thanks kAoChAn, I'm sure they will... just pretty sure it'll probably take months...

Well today I played a session which pretty much wiped out any progress from yesterday in one foul swoop... but I did do a review with Flows and Atoks which we recorded and the video should be uploaded on the dissection blog soon... there are so many different videos I wanna do for that, still need to get round to that next HH in the inbox, but I kinda need to review my own game as well... which led me to another idea...

I want to develop my 6-max game, but I am struggling to find decent content on the web... there are a few videos available on some sites but all at a cost... PS has nothing on 6-max SNGs... But, even though I feel confident as a SNG player, I think I have a lot to learn in order to improve mmy game... so I am going to start producing a number of review videos where I will go over my HHs and explain my thoughts, ideas and questions, and anyone who has ideas can contribute... I may do these with the other guys, or I may do them on my own, but I will probably produce quite a few of them, and they should be fairly short so easy to absorb...

So even if you don't play these games, they will largely be focusing on adjusting to ranges in the late stage, early stage post-flop situations, probably a lot of bubble situations... dealing with and adjusting to regulars which are all situations you encounter in every SNG... so please help me as I continue to try and improve my game and beat 6-max SNGs...

1st vid coming soon...
