Hand converted with online PokerStrategy.com hand converter:

Play hand

$0.5/$1 No-Limit Hold'em (8 handed)

Known players:
[tg]BU (Hero)$99.50:///////;SB$100.00:///////;BB$48.00:///////;UTG2$176.55:///////;MP1$131.20:///////;MP2$85.15:///////;MP3$210.80:///////;CO$30.00:///////;[/tg]

Preflop: Hero is BU with T:c, 9:c.
5 folds, Hero raises to $3.50, SB raises to $12.00, BB folds, Hero calls $8.50.

VILLAIN 14/11/ Af 4,7 / AFq 50% / 3-bet from blinds 6% hands. I did not check more stats in my PT.

I made a call preflop here, though I sometimes fold these situations, say 50-50 (what do you think about it?).

Flop: ($25) 7:h, T:s, 4:h (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $15.00, SB raises to $40.00, Hero folds, SB gets uncalled bet back.

When he checked, it seemed to me he has unpaired face cards, but after check/raise I think I should fold here, since if he is not bluffing I am beaten. Could I even think about check behind the flop? Or is this just nh? (I think I must protect my hand on the flop).

Final Pot: $40.

Fold preflop, it's not profitable to call this with 100BB stacks.
You can start when you're 120BB deep.

As played check back the flop.
Reason: See bernie0303's post.

If you struggle with this just post again and I'll explain in detail.

Thanks. Yes - please explain in more detail. I am not betting the flop to get called by worse hands. I bet flop mostly to protect my hand.

Most of the time, he has 2 overcards here. Then my reasons to bet are:

1) If I check, he can outdraw me.
2) If I check and the turn is blank, he is not likely to bet and will fold to my bet on turn anyway, so I can´t get more value from this hand. In comparison with bet on flop, the potential profit is the same but I risk to be outdrawed.
3) If I bet flop he can call me with some hand which has mediocre SD value - e.g. 99,88,66. He can also call me speculatively with overcards.
4) Plus here in this situation he may have some draws. I want him to pay me off with the draws.

--> I have the hand with value on flop but which is very vulnerable if I let free cards roll. I don´t mind to win the pot on the flop.

The downside of betting is that if he has better hand, I must fold to his c/r. But I would lose the pot anyway to better hands (if I don´t hit my 5 outs) so I dont mind bet/folding.

You may argue, that I lost 15$ when betting. But if the turn is blank (say 2) and he tries to bet 15$ are you really folding??? ?( Note that this hand was 3betted by SB pre with 6% 3-bet range - most of the time it is facecards which are frequently folding to my bet on flop.

--> I completely don´t see the point in checking behind the flop _confused: _confused: _confused: Up to now I was totally convinced this is the flop for VALUE BET and PROTECTION. Why would I pot control here? I always bet similar spots. If it´s wrong, this would mean I play totally wrong all my (short but profitable 3BB/100 in 40k hands ) poker carreer _frown:

I agree that suited connectors should only be defended 120BB deep. Plus 3bet 6% from blinds isn't that high, if it was 10% then I would consider defending since we need more air in his range for us to float/bluff raise profitably.

On the flop, obviously villian is giving up often on such a board. But from my experience at NL100, people seldom check/fold in 3bet pots. They almost always cbet with air and when they check, more than half the time they are going for a checkraise with overpairs.

So I think checkback flop should be the best play to not get blown off our hand. I won't be too worried about free cards since our hand is not that strong in the first place.

u are playing against a reg. du u think he will 3bet 66-99 preflop? what kind of draws do u think he has on such a flop in a 3bet pot?

but its not a strong hand.
weak made hand -> small pots
strong hands -> big pots
easy as that.

there are overall 2 options why u bet:
1. u wanna get called by worse hands -> value bet
2. u wanna fold out better hands -> bluff
note: there is NO protection bet. what u might call a "protection bet" is a value bet. a draw is not a madehand. if u bet, and villian calls with his fd, u bet for value, cause ur hand is better than the fd.

if u dont think u will get called by worse hands (and better hands will NEVER fold here) its just burning money on the flop.

i hope i made it clear. if not, i tried my best to do so

mhmm, makes sense. He would probably C-bet air so he may be on c/r mode flop frequently.

I agree I should only bet with strong made hand. That´s true that here I am more in situation either WA/WB. I may pot control and induce the bluff. Still, I can also roll for my 5 outs.

Thanks!

Yep, Bernie explained it pretty well (and he obviously read BalugaWhale's book ;)).

This! it s a bit more difficult on higher lims, but understanding this is by far most important here.
