heh, Kaktus, it was more like 15-20 moves actually , well, u have to play more actively as a white. Tho tbh u cannot rly have a chance since i was an active chess plr and still thinking of returning to it once it a while. I ve already registered back to my club for this season, i should play few games, though its unlikely i ll ever have any ambitions there just coz poker is simply a priority at weekends.
today i made prolly my most important discovery considering variance in poker, and hope to advise this to all ppl who struggle with downswings: (currently i run 20k under pure EV now for last 3 weeks, not counting some setups etc.. no reason to post anything, all know it, i get constantly 2-3outered just all the time-simple) rly got into a mode of thinking abt things.
I totally stopped any NL2k, and even abt NL1k i began to be more selective just coz i didnt want to lose even more. Funny thing is, on both Stars, Party i run a bit over EV, but on ipoker i run close ~25k under EV with virtually the same playing style (!) This unique experience (the worst under EV run before i had was some 8k under) allowed me to have feeling for losing ppl. --> All know, its 1, irritating 2, makes u doubt ur true qualities, hence u play usually even more conservative with less special plays, which are necessary vs very good opponents.
ok now, today again in 2h i run close to 3k under EV, but except for 1 play i rly didnt regret anything and played very well.. after 1 hand i spew 1 stack away tho, i instaquited. Now, i dont know if this will work for everyone, but i concluded:
1, even if i have ultrahorrible unluck repeatedly i can tolerate it for abt 10x longer than if i play stupid.
2, if i play stupid, in my mind i go to thinking i am incredibly unlucky and its just not fair, blablabla, to all the time be losing and that s how i try to excuse to myself the stupid play.
3, if i played always the same with consistency irrespectible of variance, i would: a, save a lot of money over longrun by not spewing a bit here and there (which gathers a lot over time) b, i would be in a positive mood to play another session just coz lets face it: when u play your absolute best and lose all the time and just quit, how do u feel compared to when u end the session by playing stupid as a result? I just feel disgusted abt myself and poker in general in a scenario of stupidplay, while in case of quitting instead i feel like i am actually gaining sth: experience!
This is sth ppl massively underetimate imo. On NL1k fe, the edge difference betw plrs is quite small and getting smaller every week, but the tilt issue is a factor what i can recognize among many! U would be surprised how many times i see this: person playing ok, losing 2-3 big pots, then playing 1 pot stupid spewing another 1 more stack and instaquitting. This is not only bad for his roll, this is a READ!
In other words, if u happen to know u cannot handle losing, just quit insta when u lose sth big, irrespectible where is a fish or anything. U need to get rid of this before ppl on your tables start to be expecting spewing from u as a result- and it never changes. To me, a read of how sb reacts to losing is esp on higher stakes much more important than how much he reacts fe to 3bets oop or w/e.
Ok, thats it, gonna go and eat now, am rly hungry and am rly looking forw to play another session after it. My approach is now this and hope yours on your downswings will be the same: its a challenge! Strive for perfection. In your head! If u can be absolutely clear in your mind at any times and make use of others not being, u re going to much icrease your overall edge on the opposition and ulitimately own everybody. Also, as i now recognize it is THE no1 step to playing high stakes succesfully.
And abt the chess challenges: hmm, on occasion i play on playchess.com - the biggest server by far for online chess, tho i might have a look at the smaller servers and reg there, will report when having mood.
