what a horrible river....

you played the hand really well, nice bets.

that really is the worst river in the deck. I find that when fish c/c, c/c then shove river when draws complete they usually have the goods. However, I think unknowns on this limit can take this line with a weaker set,or aces-up often enough to call river getting 3:1 (which means you only have to be correct about 25% of the time to break-even, which think is reasonable).

so conclusion = call. but it sucks

I read the topic and a few minutes after that I played a very same hand

I called the river and won against weaker set. The thing is that in situations like this the villain will often show us a set or 2 pairs, than drawing J10 kind of hand imo.

Sometimes he will turn up with a straight or a flush, but that doesn't mean our call is incorrect against his likely range.

You don't need to worry as much about a backdoor flush after your opponent calls a big bet on the flop. It is hard for someone to call on the flop with two hearts. Similarly, although the river puts 4 to a straight on the board, it primarily completed gutshots. The only 8-out straight draws which were completed by the 7 were JT and QT (double gutshot), and it is hard for someone with JT or QT to call a big flop bet out of position on the A96 flop, unless they were J♣ T♣ or Q♣ T♣. Perhaps AT hit a straight, but you see 3/4 of the aces so there are only 4 AT combinations. On the other hand, some hands like A7, 76, 87, and 97 would have had a pair plus OESD on the turn and then improved to two pair.

So, with top set, this is an easy call. It is tougher to call with something like AK, and I would probably get bluffed off of worse. It's a good bluff with 64o once he gets there, but I think he paid too much for the chance to bluff. Most river cards will not be as scary.
