Background:
Early on in WPT qualifier, cheap buyin (I qualified for free), 160 entries with just 1x seat available to winner only.
n.b. I don't use any software, relying on own reads instead (personal choice & practice for live events).
Opponent:
Whilst early phase of tournament, played against this guy in other tournaments. He likes to play a lot of hands, usually limping but also raises at least once or twice a circuit, seen making some daft moves occasionally.
My thought process at the time
Preflop: Pretty standard, i.e. going to raise up any limpers or raises from MP+, would raise up any EP raise unless known reg in which case may consider call and then check/raise flop for info/value.
As it happens I get 1x raise from MP from known guy who likes to see a lot of hands, raise is a little large but not unusual for this guy, happy days. Standard 3 bet. At this stage he could have anything, but as he raised rather than limp, suggest Ax, KQ, 22+ or suited connectors.
Postflop: As two to the flush and oop going to lead out and be happy with taking pot down here & now or get value from any fd hunters. Bet 3/4 pot.
Call suggests he has something, possibly AQ, FD or more likely mid pair calling for value with only 1x overcard on board.
Turn: Turn is ugly pairing board and now double flushed. If I check here, this guy is going to bet 90% of time anyway and I still won't be any the wiser. Still feel I'm ahead so lead out again. 3/4 pot.
River: Worse possible card. Any ace now beats me as does diamonds. Whilst trip Q's, 6's and 8's are unlikely can't be totally discounted. Feel check is the best option and re-evaluate again depending on villan's action.
Villan pushes all in (10% pot), pretty committed and a call leaves me with 18bb behind, enough to survive and build up on or push/fold if I lose.
Villan has ?? and I win?/lose? hand.
Qu. Did I overplay this, betting 3/4 pot sizes on a dangerous board? or was I right to play aggressive in a game where only 1 in 160 qualify?
Qu. What is the correct bet sizing in this situation? Should I pot-control more to give myself an out if it gets messy?
Qu. Would you play this differently if it were a normal (10% cash) tournament?
