Hi,

I am even older than you - 50 - semi-working from home and also learning how to play poker.

I live in Birmingham (UK) with wife and 2 kids and play $4 rush SNGs on FT. Good luck with cash games

Cheers

Jass :P

Those $4 rush SnGs look sooo temptingly fishy. Go crush them! :f_biggrin:

I just enjoyed this one. Decided it was a suspicious bet on the river.

Full Tilt - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

CO: $8.69
BTN: $6.70
SB: $15.65
Hero (BB): $14.94
UTG: $8.40
MP: $11.08

SB posts SB $0.05, Hero posts BB $0.10

Pre Flop: ($0.15) Hero has J♦ A♠

UTG calls $0.10, fold, CO calls $0.10, fold, SB raises to $0.40, Hero calls $0.30, UTG calls $0.30, CO calls $0.30

Flop: ($1.60, 4 players) 2♠ 8♦ 9♠
SB checks, Hero checks, UTG checks, CO bets $0.80, fold, Hero calls $0.80, UTG calls $0.80

Turn: ($4.00, 3 players) A♣
Hero bets $2.00, UTG calls $2.00, fold

River: ($8.00, 2 players) 6♣
Hero checks, UTG bets $5.20 and is all-in, Hero calls $5.20

UTG shows T♠ J♥ (High Card, Ace) (PreFlop 29%, Flop 40%, Turn 18%)
Hero shows J♦ A♠ (One Pair, Aces) (PreFlop 71%, Flop 60%, Turn 82%)
Hero wins $17.18

But... on this next one thought I should check behind on the river, as I was sure I was ahead, and failed to notice that the river card had counterfeited my poxy little pair. What a donk! :f_mad:

PokerStars - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 5 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

Hero (CO): $9.39
BTN: $10.00
SB: $19.91
BB: $10.00
UTG: $12.29

SB posts SB $0.05, BB posts BB $0.10

Pre Flop: ($0.15) Hero has 5♣ 5♥

UTG raises to $0.40, Hero calls $0.40, fold, fold, fold

Flop: ($0.95, 2 players) 2♠ J♣ 7♦
UTG bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

Turn: ($1.95, 2 players) 7♥
UTG bets $1.10, Hero calls $1.10

River: ($4.15, 2 players) J♠
UTG checks, Hero checks

UTG shows Q♣ K♠ (Two Pair, Jacks and Sevens) (PreFlop 47%, Flop 28%, Turn 20%)
Hero mucks 5♣ 5♥ (Two Pair, Jacks and Sevens) (PreFlop 53%, Flop 72%, Turn 80%)
UTG wins $3.95

In Easy Game, BalugaWhale says there are two main types of bad player.

Passive-Bad: Calls too much, only raises with the nuts. We should value bet relentlessly and not make big calls.
Aggressive-Bad: Plays too many hands and makes bets that make no sense. We should value bet relentlessly and make big calls.

After having played for a bit I'm thinking this is probably true, and presumably TT agrees, as he told me to read Easy Game.

I'm going to Hasenbraten's BSS coaching at 9.30, which will be a first. I'll edit in an opinion on it later.

EDIT: He went through the England v France Quiz hands. Very good.

Yes, I know I'm a complete fish at cash :f_grin:, but why do you call flop in hand 1? In a 4way pot I really don't get this. Also preflop I'm not sure calling is going to be that great since the limpers are joining the party, and your hand plays quite bad multiway. I think 3betting or folding is going to be better.

Hand 2 did you have good reads to call turn? Seems quite spewy vs unknown UTG

Bearing mind that I don't really know what I'm doing......

Hand 1: I don't want to fold AJ, and I don't see the point of 3betting, as I'll probably need to fold to a 4bet. I think people play wider ranges in SH than FR, and AJ is a nice hand. On the flop I have two overcards and some backdoor draws, and CO has seen three checks, so he could just be trying to steal the pot.

Hand 2: He was very loose and I thought he would fire two barrels with nothing quite often. I'm sure he would have folded to a river bet. If only you could have 3 pair....... :f_mad:

1. you're getting ahead of yourself. At higher limits against better players this is absolutely true and you should never 3bet/fold AJo here when you can call and play so well in position against his range. However if you 3bet at thsi limit people will call OOP with worse hands often enough and also they won't 4bet bluff you off the best hand. So 3betting against a more predictable fish is the best line.

2. Just fold the flop. If you call the flop your turn line is fine indeed, but if you think about it he can easily have it on the flop, and if he doesn't, with a hand like T9, T8, 89 etc etc he has so much equity against yours, just from counterfeiting chances. I like your calldown on boards that are even less connected

This is very true. The problem is that I'm sitting around reading, The Poker Blueprint, Easy Game, Small Stakes NLHE, etc, etc, and soaking up loads of stuff about balancing, and barrelling and polarizing, and then playing NL10. I try to think value, value, value, but I do, indeed sometimes get ahead of myself. Coaching with TT will be interesting I think.

The more I play this, the more I see the analogies with chess.

In chess, if I'm playing a really bad player, I can just sit there, get my pieces out and wait for them to make a stupid mistake. This is what everyone says you can do at NL10. If I can crush NL10 as easily as I can crush weak chess players, I'd be very happy.

In chess, you need to have a plan. A bad plan is better than no plan. Same in poker.

In chess, if you're playing a strong player, simply getting your pieces out and waiting for a mistake doesn't cut it any more. You have to take some chances, for example accepting a small disadvantage of some sort to get an advantage of a different sort, and then pressing home your advantage before the disadvantage creeps up and beats you. But this is pointless against weak players, and if it goes wrong, can lose you the game. In poker, you seem to need to take this proactive approach at higher stakes in order to gain an edge, but this can be disastrous against weak players at NL10.

In chess, weak players look at the board, think of a move and make it. Strong players look at the board, make a plan, think of several moves that help realize the plan, and then analyse a few moves ahead, looking at their opponents possible responses. In poker, weak players (like me!) look at their hand, decide they like it, and bet. Strong players think in terms of their opponent's hand range, their perceived hand range, image, history, etc, etc.

Poker and chess! :f_thumbsup:

Have caught a cold and feel shit! Always happens eventually when I'm in enclosed spaces with unhealthy students at regular intervals. And we have about 6 inches of snow. And the kids want to make a snowman. And England are getting stuffed by Australia in the cricket. Bugger! Bugger! Bugger! :f_mad:

I really like your analogy, does chess account enough for the short term luck factor though? I thought of this a lot, comparing poker with chess, boxing, football. The more I think about it though, I think it's more like in cricket - bowling to a specific batsman.

You find a players weakness (calling down lightly), decide to bowl at it (relentlessly value bet), set a field for it (size your bets to get it allin on the turn), bowl the perfect ball (he calls the turn bet) and 2nd slip drops it (hits his flush on the river).

Hope you feel better soon

Good analogy. There's no point thinking on level 3 if your opponent is still on level 1 (oooh, look at my pretty cards). I think it's true to say you can definitely over think a situation at the lower levels

Definitely not!

I actually read somewhere that a statistical analysis shows that the sport with the most short term luck is football. I use this to console myself when Spurs do things like beat Inter then lose to Bolton.

And I like the cricket analogy. Sounds like Anderson completely pwned the Aussie batsmen last night, but didn't take a wicket. Bastards!
