Just my 2 cents on the personal gym trainer:
this doesn't make any sense for a gym beginner.
Why?
Because as a complete beginner I can give you a training scheme to work with for at least 6 months and no trainer, I am sure on that, can argue it's a bad scheme.Personal trainers come in handy if you are:
a. a horny slut whose husband neglects
b. advanced user and the things you know can't help you complete your goals anymore and you need a tweak in the diet mostly and not in the training. As a start, here are some guidelines:
3 times in a week is impossible for a beginner.
first month you'll want to do 1 time/week and maybe 2 times last week. If you train intensive enough you are going to be OK for the next training in like a week.
you start with the most basic moves. Like bench pressing for chest and nothing more. Like barbell curls for biceps and nothing more. Like shoulder press and nothing more, etc.
as a beginner I think it's best to train the whole body in one very intensive session, not more than an hour long.
you do one exercise per muscle group, 4 series of 8 repetitions each.
A typical session would consist of the following:
chest exercise
back exercise
you can switch these two
legs exercise
arms - biceps/triceps
shoulder
Abdominal muscles you should train when you do your running.
That's that for the first six months.
Combine that with a diet of your choice - for muscle gain or for a fat loss and you're set up.![]()
You'd be right if he wasn't an ectomorph, plus he's a begginer theres no way any begginer goes hard enough on a full body session to get real gains the only gains he will see will be that of a noob, no mind muscle connection and no real idea where his limits are make this training very dodgey.
Also running for an ectomorph really?
Not to mention you should definately have a Personal Trainer for one to two sessions because it is so important to get proper form on Squat and Deadlift right.
Also to teach you how to run, people run horribly and end up with knee and ankles injuries.
8reps for an ectomorph again a bad idea it's at the lower end of the hypertrophy scale and will work some power aswell something he doesn't need as a powerlifter I can say it's very important to expand your muscles before trying to gain strength it makes a huge difference.
He should be going 10-12 reps or pyramiding from 12,10,8,6 these are the routines begginers get the best overall gains from.I also don't agree you should train abdominals when your running, core strength is hugely important and will carry over into all his lifts.
He should train it twice a week atleast, plus he is ectomorph and core training gymnastic style like leg raises, planks, V-sits will quickly build his obliques and serratus giving a far more aestethic physique and giving the appearance of someone who works out alot but isn't bulky. It's what most people miss when they try to achieve "otter mode".I also don't think anyone should use the one routine for six months, you only need to do a similair routine for the beggining to establish what your limits are after that it's all about changing your training even slightly on a regular basis.
Oh and never do isolation work on your arms in a whole body routine even for extreme meso's. Take a page out of Charles Poliquin's book and do close grip chins the exercise of champions.
And he might not just be training for physique or w/e if overall performance is the case then it should be HIT and circuit training all the way right from the get go.

If you do squats or bench or well any compound exercise and your not sore the next day then your slacking hard core.EDIT: As a personal note too as someone who found it hard to gain weight I would say workouts should only be 45-50minutes Bulgarian style otherwise there is a large drop in testosterone which really hurts ecto's and begginers.
But pretty much anything he do will have great results since it's the beggining, rock on man this is just gym fags argueing! ♦

isolation work deffinitely good for begginers - no cheating (meaning using other muscles to perform the movement)
when it comes to chin ups, a begginer can't do them properly anyways
In a whole body routine there should be no isolation never said a begginer should not do isolation or that it doesn't work.
Begginers normally can't do Bodyweight chins every good gym these days has apparatus for assisted chins and pull ups.
There is only one way 2 solve this, post pics of yourself 2 see who has the best physique, then he will know who is talking crap
I am waiting to hear some fat boy say [Just because he has a better physique doesn't mean his method is better] But cry fat boy cry!
You mean more aestethic or bigger?
We can also just wait till after Christmas and I compete and beat the national powerlifting record for bench, probably equal squat and DL giving me the highest overall.
imo it would make a lot sense for a gym beginner to get a personal trainer. just make sure to pick a good one.
Psderrr made some very good points by suggesting to stick to a whole body routine for the first months/years. its very crucial to learn proper execution of the big basic exercises. so i can only recommend getting a good trainer if u can afford it
Having better physique does not mean having better lifestyle (meaning muscle balance, state of body)
i will leave you here to exchange or "valuable" opinions
1,psderrr has something to say for sure
2,NO ONE that said that if I want to make a training program I have to see the "client" first to make the proper diagnosis
bye
I've worked as a personal trainer so if you have any questions on training/diet just ask me.
Psderr's advice is really good! And form is very important so it's a good idea to have a trainer for a week or two so they can teach you how to do things right... Other than that you should be fine on your own for a while...
I'd recommend 3 sets of 10-12 for a beginner. And mix it up every couple of weeks... Wouldn't start off with pyramiding...
And 3 times a week is grand
come on guys!
Listen to Boris! There's so much bullshit written on last two pages (not everything; thanks god) and I only briefly got through those posts^^
TLN: Def get personal trainer! There's abs no doubt it's super +EV decision because of tons of reasons, no matter whether one is begginer or not...
btw: who said he is beginner?
lololol @ all these broscience going on about gym training
I've seen pictures of you in this thread, TLN. You are what we call an "ectomorph", someone who is not build very big and is lean by nature. Gaining weight for you is probably pretty hard. I don't know what your goals are, do you just wanna get a good body to show off at the beach, or do you wanna put on some real mass and strength ? Also, would you be willing to follow a quite strict "diet" ? To see real results from gym training one needs to have a routine in training/diet/rest(sleep). I think having such a routine is not only benificial for your body, but also for the mind and everything else you do in life, poker for example.
I've been training with weights since I was 15 and have competed in some strongman competitions last year. I've been through all the hardship that comes with serious training and basically read about every type of training out there. If you need help setting up a training routine or diet, you can contact me. Although if you are getting a personal trainer, he will probably do this for you already. I can say that getting a PT can be really benificiary in the beginning. If you're going to be serious about the training and do what we call "compounds" movements, good technique is crucial. It is very hard to learn this by just looking at videos and trying for yourself. Eventually, it will work, but a good PT will immediatly see what you have to work on in the first few times you do an exercise. This could save you a lot of time and maybe trouble(in the form of injury's).
Anyway, I agree with holmeboy about doing 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps per exercise in the beginning. In the beginning you just have to focus on getting the right technique on everything and knowing how to work which muscle. Later on you can add more weight to the bar to show off. ![]()
Btw, other than showing/directing you to the right technique for exercises a PT is not really worth much in my opinion. Ofcourse if you are too lazy to set up your own training/diet routine, he will come in handy, but after some time you will know for yourself what exercises and what kind of food works for you.
opal maybe you could show us how you do it? Please tell us how to do it and show NO results after working out for one year.
Next time please stfu or gtfo before you start making comments about something you know -> NOTHING <- about.
Thank you
well; being idiot works for you very well apparently..
I agreed with everything you wrote, so dont see reason for you acting like that, but feel free if you need this kind of attention..^^
Merry Xmas all! payce to the world ![]()
last 1.5 day i had a pretty short but intense depression coming from the frustration esp from my latest game + not rly feeling the purpose yet again. Ofc it was a cycle i am very much accustommed to handling already: play bad--> feel like shit poker plr--> feel like wasting my time by the game--> feel like shit abt life in general--> eat a lot and play other games to stimulate some better feelings, excitation from senses+the feeling of victory awaited--> fail coz feeling bad after ofc being totally owned in quake since havent played at all for a long time + feeling even worse coz unable to fall asleep with some gastric probs--> go to sleep rly late--> miss RL activities--> and back to the 3rd step
ofc the solution is to instead of playing quake and eating, to go out and run and watch sth not involving agression, like i rly like the series: Monk ♦ yea, so i am back even sooner than expected, should be back to serious playing from today evening. I will try to qualify to WPT Venice these few days.
@gym topic: i am rly thankful to many advices, i ll prolly reread it once again, i was just amazed the topic was developing, i ve read it few hours ago, dont remember all in specific, but what i maybe didnt write exactly before and is kinda relavant: i am not exactly a beginner, i ve been taking bodybuilding very seriously for 3y, from 14-16, getting to 96kg lowfat bodyweight, starting to get into the preparation period for an amateur mid-Europe fitness competition. So majority of the things are already very familiar to me, the techniques, the special diet, recovery times, also abt daily programmes for quickest gaining etc. I wouldnt call myself a ectomorph at all. I can put on weight if i want, i just usually eat very low fat and calories foods and even when i get overeaten from time to time - it's mostly w oranges or yoghurts
I am perfectly happy with my current 78-80kg, i just want more endurance, not rly more bodyweight. Therefore i ll go for more repetitions w less weights/exercise and more cardiotrainings. I want to have a personal trainer mostly to just motivate me progress quicker. As far as active sport, the only concrete plan for next 3 months is to run the halfmarathon on 27.3 and stay in shape to be able to attack sth around 1:40.
@poker: i need a person who is willing to cooperate w me on producing videos for pokerstrategy. I was supposed to make a vid, and if succesful then a series of analysing sessions of midstakes w Ivan, but now that he is banned + he didnt record his vid coz he is LAZY, i need a substitute. So this is ur chance. Anyone playing NL200SH and willing to record ~30mins (better more->40) of a session which he ll have analysed deeply for free, contact me. There is also an option which i rly like that we do a co-vid that we ll be bascially discussing all the spots together, which should hopefully show the most common differences in thinking processes between midstakes-higher stakes winning regs. I am looking for a reg who is already winning or at least BE (!) which has moving and beating to 400/600 lims asap as a main priority, so that this vid will be of quality insights. I am not rly a big fan of repeating the same all fundamentals every midstakes vid already has, so this should be abt striving to look at some creative lines and go in depth rather than width. Therefore i need a somewhat more active person on the tabs, at least 22/17+ with a lot of agression in late positions.
@TheLastNail
I added u in skype. Would like to record a vid. Have done this once already for TwiceT in his Leakfinder series. I play NL200 SH on Ipoker. Also interessted in co-vid.
We can discuss details in skype.
Merry Christmas.
Becks
hey im interested too, i think i fit all your requirements. Breakeven at NL400 and 600 and I play VPIP 22 when multitabling, maybe 25-26 when playing on fewer tables (4-6).
im going on a short 2 week trip though, but i'll go produce one video right now, 4-tabling NL400 SH
EDIT: here's the link of the 38 min video, a lot of typical NL400 aggrotards at the table. I also wrote my thoughts on many of the hands in the chatbox and also sometimes plan for future streets
MediaFire
Megaupload
i decided to just upload it anyway since I might not have the chance to chat while im on my trip. let me know if u are using it and want to collaborate on videos, I could use some help and I like producing videos
Nice idea tln, will surely watch those videos.
For future projects, u could think of some mtt pro sharing ideas to cash pros, hows that sounds?

Well, your job is extremely demanding for mental energy and endurance. Have you ever tried Ayurveda teas to boost the type of energy you need? I´ve never tried that, but will do soon ![]()
