I know how you feel about playing poker for a living. I played poker for a living a couple of years ago, which was great until a bad run wiped out my bankroll. When you have to take money out of the poker account for living expenses, it can get tough on a downswing.
may i suggest something less glamorous.
1)convert into a ss rakeback grinder. SNE is easily going to bring you about 100k of bonuses, and this also excludes what excess you could get after attaining SNE, which is 40% more fpp per vpp vs SN.
a simple calculation: at 1/2 games, you'd get 0.422vpp according to fpppro.com.
this means you'd take 2.37mil hands to hit SNE. at the rate of 1.3k hands per hour, you'd get a payoff of 100k/(2.37m/1.3k) $54/hr as a breakeven player.
you could also afford to be a -1.5bb losing player at that stakes and make $15/hr (ofc that is not going to be sufficiently rewarding)
of course this is never the long term solution, but what is important is that it is going to buy you more time at the game. you now have additional reasons to improve your poker skills while reaping the rewards, that your RL demands, along the way. saw that i5bet72o has suggested something similar. you could consider that approach too.
2) get coachings! saw that you were getting coached. not sure if you still are but i think coaching will help you with your game alot. you could also consider some coaching deals. e.g. collinmoshman training site offers coaching deals for 6months. it's something like 30% off pure profits only or alternatively some % of whatever profits(incl rb) per week
anyway all the best. hope to see you around for 6months and beyond!
Hey Tim!
Long time no see! Your last monthly wrap up+ is really interesting and eye-opening. I`m sad to hear things have not been going quite as good as you had expected them to poker-wise and I wish you have great 6 months at the end of which, once you draw the line, you`d be able to proudly say: 'I am, in fact, a winning poker pro.'
It's important though, to not pressure yourself psychologically over this. Whatever happens, it won't be the end of the world - be it winning $1Million or breaking even.
Best of luck mate!
Cheers!
Really touched by the kind responses - thanks guys!
@OZSA - Thanks for reading! I'm not switching to FR now. I've tried SnGs, and FR SSS and now I just have to knuckle down with something I enjoy (6max) and either improve or go home. I'm not really pressurising myself by saying that if I can't make $15/h it's time to give up -- just observing that without that I'm basically wasting my time.
@Lessthanthree - thanks for reassurance, mate. I've just finished Elements of Poker by Angelo and there's a lot of good stuff in there which I intend to implement.
@Razboynik02380 - For sure. If I had my time again, I would not consider going pro until I was a NL100 reg with 500k hands under my belt at 2bb/100+ and a 100 BI BR.
@supeyrio - it's a good suggestion - thanks - but not one I am willing to consider seriously. Some of the reasons for becoming a professional poker player were the freedom, flexibility and enjoyment I would get from the game. I don't think SNE ss'ing could give me that. There are too many machinelike jobs in this world as it is. I think I would rather do something like relationship counselling or teaching if the poker doesn't work out ![]()
@neelton - thanks! I too hope the next six months prove more fruitful. I think I am ready to accept defeat if that's the case. So the pressure for the second part of the trial shouldn't be too great. In fact, it's probably less. Because looking at it one way, I have already failed, so the worst that can happen is that nothing changes ![]()
By way of a mini update, I am now two tabling Rush nl100 SH. It's been going well so far (despite, of course, running below EV). I would like to get in 50k hands this month and I very much hope to be able to have a winning month like the last one. At the moment the record is:
Losing months: 3
Winning month: 3
I am always on the lookout for sweat partners for 6-max, particularly Rush - PM me if interested
Hi Tim,
Just going through your update. What I really liked about it is that you are being very honest and not cunning yourself.
I also think that you should stick with your current game (rush 6 max) and not become a rake back machine for the reasons you mentioned. I am sure that starting from now you will have a much better win rate.
Keep it up!
Keep at it !
As you know in my case, I was stuck @NL10 for nearly a whole YEAR, which is quite pathetic and living off of it as well ![]()
So, yes "it didn't pay off/was a waste of time" in terms of $$/h ... BUT as is the case with poker in general, DECISIONS not outcomes matter and you will reap the rewards eventually.
Ofc, good decisions don't pay the bills, but what I mean is, don't give up and keep at it, and all these hardships and other shitstorms WILL pay off handsome dividends in the (near) future.
Underpaid slave wage at first & overpaid fatcat later on
TT thinks I'll fly up to NL100 in no time (at least he did before he saw me play
). I'm shitting my pants about being stuck at NL10 forever. If he's right, you and I will be sweating in no time!
Stick with it matey.
Thanks again, guys.

Dublimax, you are so right. If only I were just a little more cunning.
Anyway, I just need a few more things like this to happen:
Grabbed by Holdem Manager
NL Holdem $1(BB) Replayer
SB ($26.50)
Hero ($169)
UTG ($94.30)
UTG+1 ($329)
CO ($849)
BTN ($149)
Dealt to Hero A♣ 3♣
fold, fold, CO raises to $2, fold, fold, Hero calls $1
FLOP ($4.50) 8♣ K♣ J♣
Hero bets $4.50, CO raises to $9, Hero raises to $27, CO calls $18
TURN ($58.50) 8♣ K♣ J♣ 5♦
Hero bets $56, CO raises to $820 (AI), Hero calls $84.65 (AI)
RIVER ($339) 8♣ K♣ J♣ 5♦ 9♦
Hero shows A♣ 3♣
(Pre 59%, Flop 99.9%, Turn 100.0%)
CO shows 6♣ 4♣
(Pre 41%, Flop 0.1%, Turn 0.0%)
Hero wins $336
Normally for me, a 99.9% chance of not getting outdrawn is absolutely no guarantee of anything. But it seems today I got lucky.
More to the point, how does someone who plays like this win 8.5BI???

Oh how I wish I would have stumbled upon your blog earlier then I did. Which is about 30 minutes ago. I've spent the last 30 mins reading the last couple of pagaes and i must say I found it really interestingr reading.
I will for sure keep following your blog
I think you're already way ahead most other people, I mean if I was to run that bad for that long I think I would have gone mad. Like no joke. I have run bad for months now myself aswell, but nothing like you seem to have. I really admire how you deal with it. ![]()
GL at Rush!
Thanks, vonki - you too. Lmk if you want to sweat once you get established on Rush.
Hey,
Half year losing in poker. Doable, i did it as well and it even continues. Okey i am not losing any more but i am just breaking even. (almost like losing). U said February will our month, lets see how it will come :). 6 days more and i check my results (not, that i need, but i should pay for bierbaer). Results are for weak ppl, WE JUST NEED TO BEAT THE GAME and if we do it, then money comes also (as bonus). And it will be funny cause everybody will lvl vs us :).

That`s true. And BTW that apology was needed, cause, who want to see some bronze player spamming somebody`s blog? Answer: nobody ♠_cry:. I go and watch some simpsons now and eat some Raffaellos. ♠_evil:

I wouldnt be so foldhappy here against unknown reg, and btw what that means ♦ "unknown reg". But looks doable.
