Villain's Range?

Merge, $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 5 Players

Hero (BB): $50.75 (101.5 bb)
MP: $13.50 (27 bb)
CO: $50.75 (101.5 bb)
BTN: $85.71 (171.4 bb)
SB: $55.89 (111.8 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with A Q
MP folds, CO raises to $1.50, 2 folds, Hero calls $1

Flop: ($3.25) A 6 Q (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets $2, Hero raises to $6.83, CO calls $4.83

Turn: ($16.91) T (2 players)
Hero bets $12, CO raises to $42.42 and is all-in

Villain in the CO is playing 16/13/2 over ~500 hands with a 64% Fold to 3Bet. He Flop C-Bet percentage is 58% (n = 26).

What hand(s) does he take this line with? What does he need to show up here with for me to make the call?

well it looks pretty strong and he doesn't seem like that loose and aggresive so maybe his range is something like: A6,66,AA,QQ,AQ,AcJc,AcKc,AT

Everyone wants to be better. But how many people really want to do all the things necessary to become better? I find that this number is small. Getting better is hard and takes sacrifices. What are you willing to give up in order to improve? Do you really want it or just kind of want it?

Most of the people I interact with just kind of want things. There is a certain hunger that's missing which anyone who has mastered anything has had. I know that there are things I kind of want as well (learning Spanish for example). But, if I really wanted to learn Spanish, it would be central in my life. And I would learn it. As things stand, it would be nice if I could know Spanish, but I'm not willing to give up much to make that happen.

How bad do you want it?

Lack of motivation is a big issue for me. I want to move up, play more and work hard on my game, yet years go by without making much progress at all.
So I guess I don't want it bad enough.

As a kid I did not learn how to work for anything as school was too easy. This is holding me back to this day. I know I have it in me, I call it PPG or Potential Poker Greatness, but it is pretty deep. How to get it out?

With me it is pretty much all or nothing. At the moment it is nothing. I need to find the switch that sets me in "all" mode. My goal for the next 7 days will be to search for the switch.

Verneer, please post in this tread when your book is avaible on amazon.co.uk. I will buy it so it can sit next to all my other pokerbooks on the shelf collecting dust ;)

You can dream of achieving things but it stops pretty fast when you realize how much you will have to work to get it, so you just have to start with a small step and you usually just say I will start doing it tomorrow and then the next excuse and so on, so a better video on motivation would be

Ok I don't play SH but I can say what this seems like to me (since villain is tighter in SH than me in FR - I'm around 20/17 there).
In the 1st place based on his move on the turn, my opinion is that he is never / very rarely bluffing, especially this kind of player. It really looks like a shove to protect against various draws.
Also, since he is cBetting rather tight and he called the raise, so he had something strong right from the flop.
I'm guessing his range here is A6 (6combos), 66 (3combos), AT (6combos), AQ (4 combos), QQ (1combo), AA (1 combo), maybe a QT that turned 2 pair (6combos)

I think here AK would be kind of overplayed on his part, although we can include that also, depends on his read on us. Let's include that, just in case (8 combos). Ok, let's throw TT (3 combos) in there, to balance the AK. I guess we could make an argument for him not folding TT on the flop, the arguments being that maybe he has a read on us that makes him think we are raising flop cBets light and that he can pot control IP.

So we beat A6, AT, AK, QT, that's 26 combos
We are beat by 66, AA, QQ, TT that's 8 combos

Damn, I just realized, I guess we could do all this in equilab... Anyways, I'm new to counting combinations, so I just wanted to practice it more.

Board: A♦6♠Q♣ T♣
       Equity     Win     Tie
MP2    29.08%  29.08%   0.00% { AA, QQ, TT, 66, AKs, ATs, A6s, QTs, AKo, ATo, A6o, QTo }
MP3    70.92%  70.92%   0.00% { AhQs }

So we have 29,08% equity vs this range, and we need at least 29,9% to be break-even. So, judging by my assumptions, this should be a very near fold.

I appreciate any feedback for my analysis, brutal as it may be, I am still trying to improve my evaluating skills since I recently got back to cash so it's ok, I won't mind if u criticise.

EDIT: Lol at me getting the equities inverted, we actually have 70% equity, which makes it a clear call. Props go to dooleslovs for pointing it out

Verneer don't you think that it is world is pretty fucked up?? In my country it is illegal to play poker (there is even a threat of a jail time) however everyone plays poker or bet on sport. In the USA it is legal to play poker online however it is nearly impossible (for sure not possible if you want do it for a lliving).
Seriously I don't understand it at all :f_biggrin:

If he is tight QTo seems unlikey since imo tight players usely don't call the c/r on the flop with 2nd pair T kicker. He might play the AcJc or AcKc this way since he might think he might be ahead and is not he still has alot of outs to outdraw. don't think he will have Acxc for the same reason he probably won't have QT

yes I agree about the unlikelihood of those hands u mentioned, as I said I am including those assuming he knows that we are going to playback a lot. After all, we are calling OOP so we must have a plan postflop, other than just calling hoping to hit, playing fit or fold

And yeah, I think AcJc, AcKc could be included in his range.

A hand one of my students (call him Tom) just sent me:

Game and Relevant Reads:
50NL Full Ring on Stars.
MP2 ($61.52) - we have no reads on this player.
Hero ($54.92) is in the cutoff.

Action:
MP2 raises to $1.50 and Tom three-bets with A  A :spade: to $4.50. Folds around to the villain who calls.

The flop comes Q  J  9 :club:. Villain checks and Tom checks back in position.

The turn is the 8 :diamond:. Villain leads for $5.50 into $9.75 and Tom calls.

The river is the T :spade:. There is $20.75 in the pot.

River Decision:
Do you like a check, a 1/2 PSB, a PSB, a 1.5 PSB, or going all-in (2x PSB)?

Can I cheat and say I'd like to see him bet the flop? I mean why check it back and wait for the board to get worse?

Go ahead. Cheater :P

I did talk to him about betting the flop and I'm ok with a check. I don't think betting there is superior to checking. I'm definitely hating life if I get check/raised on that board.

And I believe that T  is the only card that could make this mess any worse. I would like to see Tom leading big here on the flop.

As played I don't see any reason for calling that turn card.

I hate to put him on an exact hand but calling the flop raise only looks like AK. In any case I'm calling, but I'm prone to do that too much anyway. If he only called the raise with QQ then so be it.. I wouldn't play QQ that way.
----------------------

I'll take a shot at latest hand I like a pot-size bet on the river. what are the chances he had A:h K:h and called your 3bet pf compared to the rest of his range. AQ, AK, KQs .. KQs can't beat AK so you're safe even if villain is holding that. In which case I vote for a full pot size bet, if he comes over the top it's AK and we can safely fold?

Any stats on the opponent? Just based on past experience, best move here is a shove. I expect Kx and AK to vbet himself because with no history he can't expect us to bluff a split often enough but we can definitely call a normal sized bet a good percentage of the time.

Apart from that, I don't like the "not bet because I don't want to get raised" mentality. Could you go a bit more into detail about his reasons to check instead of cbet?

You never ever have 71% equity against a nit in that spot. The range you assigned him is highly optimistic.

He doesnt open A6o pre so there's only 2 combos of A6s left that might not shove the turn anyway but rather bluffcatch.

AT, QT are the hands he very likely doesn't c-bet at all but check back for potcontrol given his low c-bet. If he does c-bet them its very likely he folds them to a c/r at least some of the time.

A nit like that doesn't c/shove AK on this turn like ever unless its AcKc. I think his more likely to fold AK then to shove it, but most of the time he will be calling.

You will be seeing a set thats now scared of draws on the turn and wants to protect a whole lot so I think its actually a fold against the nit but its close either way. Definitly not an easy call as you seem to think tho.

No stats.

I didn't say I wouldn't bet because I don't want to get raised. I said that I am hating life if I get check/raised on that board. As a mathematician, that's a subtle but important difference to me :)

I like a check because I think it's the line that gets the most value from his complete range over three streets. If I bet that flop, my hand looks very, very strong and I don't expect to get action from many worse hands. The only legitimate hands he can have that continue are Tx, KQ and KK. I have to discount AQ and AJ due to blockers. QQ, JJ, 99 continue as well.

On the other hand, by checking, he can try to play bluff-catcher with his weaker hands on the turn and possibly river. I also get a much better idea of where I stand.
